Title [Trade Catalogue] Art in Bronze T. F. McGann and Sons Company
Book Condition Fine
Seller ID 005350
Unusual catalogue of First World War commemorative statues, and scarce, with no copies located on OCLC. N.d., but presumed 1919 or so. Oblong 4to. 24 by 31 cm. Unpaginated, eight leaves, with content entirely on rectos. Also separate card for a bas-relief produced by the company. The statues were designed by C. Oscar Crawford, Charles Gibson or unnamed artists and cast by the McGann company, which got its start in 1869 and expanded to foundries in Somerville in 1902. Here the company was surely tapping into the demand for statues to honor the doughboys that was felt in every village and city, and in all probability, was offering statues at a more affordable rate than would have been the case if these municipalities had commissioned works themselves. As fitting the purpose, the catalogue is aesthetically appealing, on a quality grade of paper, with tasteful composition of the imagery and a general solemn gravitas to the production. The brown wraps are bound with a crimson ribbon tie.
