Oblong, 4to. 23 by 29 cm. , , pp. Color illustrated wrapper by Popineau. Elaborate Art Nouveau-styled catalogue from Parisian department store, Pygmalion, with a theatrical tie-in and theme. Essentially an one-day event at the store is linked to various theatrical performances and theaters in Paris. Top female stars of the day, and earlier, from the dramatic, operatic and ballet stage are featured in inset images, including Mary Garden, Mariette Sully, Eve Lavaliere, Marguerite Deval, Maud Amy, Lina Cavalieri, Jeanne Granier, etc. Garden, a Scottish-American soprano, established herself first in Paris and in the operas of Massenet and other French composers, and in fact, it was in 1909 that she was recruited by Oscar Hammerstein I to be the top star of his newly established Manhattan Opera Company, from which perch she was to become widely known in America. Products showcased in the catalogue include blouses, hats, lace, scarves, plumed adornments, ribbons, parasols, gloves, skirts, etc. There is here and there an attempt to relate the garment or accessory with the celebrity or a role, but that isn't the primary thrust of this handsome production. Rather, the idea is more for the store and its fine products to bathe in the glamour of theater and its stars, and perhaps the reverse as well. And the text by Créquy is breezy and is like a spray of a sweet fragance on the whole affair. Light wear to the stiff wraps.
