Unique hand-colored copy of this early 18th Century collection of biblical illustrations. With 212 hand-colored copper engraved plates, 29 of which are double paged, and many hand-colored headpieces, tailpieces, vignettes and initials throughout the text. Folio, 44 by 28 cm. , 148, ; , -280, 14; 160 pp. Engravings are based on paintings by Bernard Picart, Gerard Hoet and Jacob Houbrahen. Each plate has captions below rendered in five languages: Dutch, English, German, Latin, French, English and Hebrew. Accompanying each plate is also two pages of text, this given entirely in Dutch, which goes into greater detail the biblical story depicted in the plate. This work is thus not a bible per se, but rather, a compilation of the major biblical stories, each of which is shown in an elaborate, minutely detailed, often graphic illustration. Two volumes are devoted to the old testament, one, to the new. Of the contributors, the best known today is surely Bernard Picart, whose majesterial "Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde" was a landmark in a wider understanding of the world's religions and remains to this day a highly prized plate book. A half-title plate in the first volume bears the title of "Figures de la Bible" and is credited to Picart as the publisher, and sited in Amsterdam, 1720. We note one other anomaly: the title page spells "Taferelen", the Dutch word for "scenes", with a single "e" in its last syllable, while elsewhere in the text it is spelled as "Tafereelen". The half brown morocco binding is probaby from the nineteenth century. It remains impressive, notwithstanding some rubbing and minor abrasions. There is scattered light soiling within, and a few very minor corner chips. Overall, a stunning, and special, set.
