1 ABC and 123 Book. Wash-Fabric Books. No. 425.
New York Sam'l Gabriel Sons & Company First Edition NA Fine
N.d., circa 1920. 8vo. 21.5 by 15 cm. Unpaginates, but five leaves, or ten pages, including cover, each with the fabric folded over as in a typical traditional Japanese publication. Lovely color vignette illustrations of objects and animals shown to represent each letter, or fruits used to demonstrate quantity in the numbering section. Pristine copy. Uniquely clean -- we have never seen a fabric book like this one so spotless and fresh! Only very trivial fault are two flattened crease lines on the front cover.

Paris Chez Bossange, Masson et Besson 1802 (An X) Full Calf Very Good
17 by 10 cm. 12mo. viii, 451 pp. Nine plates, one of which is a folding and contains two global maps. These plates are lettered up to "K", with the folding map plate given as G and H. No "J" plate present but no evidence of removal, and we believe the book in fact contains all the plates that were initially there. This is a work that went through multiple editions, though, and other printings had both more and fewer plates. Much of the text is organized in a question and answer format, as was a common pedagogical technique in primers of the day. Geography is the most extensive topic, but as the title suggests, the work ranges over a wide range of scientific topics, as well as some of the arts. The contemporary calf has a small chip on the front board and considerable wear elsewhere but remains attractive and viable. Prize (Prix) marking in gilt on rear cover. A few leaves affected by light dampstaining, and some other scattered soiling.

Adventures of Benjamin F. Bear
3 Adventures of Benjamin F. Bear
New York Lord & Taylor Wraps Very Good
N.d., circa early to mid-1940s. (Reference to Office of Price Administration, which existed between 1941 and 1947, and references to "Admiral Byrd Cloth", among other things, suggest the earlier part of this period.) 30 by 14 cm. Unpaginated, 24 pp. including wrap covers. Scarce, with no copies appearing on OCLC FirstServe. Loosely strung story about a cute cub who decides not to hibernate so that he can find out what autumn and winter are like in New York City, and all the fun he has as a result. On the rectos is narrated the story, while on the facing versos junior fashion items are illustrated and described, with the descriptions sometimes making allusion to the accompanying story. This was from a time when children in the city were dressed up in city clothes like miniature adults, and even play clothes, in which children could be children, had a certain flair that has largely vanished from our fashion scene. The illustration of both the children's fashion and the bear story are done in what can only be described as the breezy Lord & Taylor signature style, which was a perfect expression of the upscale department specialty store's image of comfortable elegance. At the time, this look was new, introduced by retail legend Dorothy Shaver, the first female president of a major retail chain. The story of the bear is not to be confused with a more recent, somewhat similar story with almost the same title. The story here may not be anyone's idea of sublime juvenile fiction -- it was probably written by a member of the store's marketing staff or its advertising agency -- but it does capture a moment in our culture very well indeed. Corner chips on the wraps. Darkening of the cover. Generally clean within.

Bilderbuch: Der Kampf mit dem Drachen
11 Bilderbuch: Der Kampf mit dem Drachen
Hardcover. Rope binding. Very Good
Original fairy tale with disarming naive watercolors that thoroughly illustrate the tale. N.d., circa 1910. Oblong 8vo. 19 by 28.5 cm. 11 leaves of heavy card, each with a mounted watercolor illustration on the verso, and mounted text page, in verse surrounded by Jugenstil line decorations, on the facing rectos. The watercolors all cover every inch of their boards, and this imparts a rich lushness seldom encountered in such juvenile efforts. The narrative is about a dwarf named Pumpel who lives in a mushroom hut. Because he is bored, he decides to venture out into the world on a snail-driven cart. Hungry and thirsty, he comes upon an inn run by a landlady frog Unke. At dinner, in the company of other frogs, he hears the tale of an evil dragon who has imprisoned for years a beautiful flower fairy. It is then resolved that they will set out to fight the monster and liberate the fairy. The bees sting the monster and the frogs splash water on him until he finally retreats. The princess Pumpelione wakes up, she and Pumpel are wed, and they live happily ever after. Edges and corners have wear. The binding is in a painted style prevalent around 1920. Occasional staining on text pages.

Colorful Japanese Children's Brochure, with a variety of color plates
15 Colorful Japanese Children's Brochure, with a variety of color plates
Japan NA Near Fine
Mid-20th Century. 8vo. 22 by 15 cm. 16 pp., including cover, and one of which is a fold-out color plate, with three panels. 12 pages qualify as full color plates, with rich coloring. A few of these illustrations are multi-page -- three are double paged (one of these is more a collage of several illustrations), and one is triple paged. All the other pages have color illustrations, but these are text illustrations, with a more limited palette -- generally flatter greens, reds, flesh and blacks. The brochure looks as if it were assembled by marrying two smaller brochures -- or gatherings -- one being the flamboyantly colored, fully illustrated side, the other, the more text driven, more somberly illustrated part. Because we can not speak to the text, we admittedly are drawn to the fully colored illustrations, which are captioned, sometimes at considerable length, but whose illustrations also speak for themselves. These illustrations are split between those which depict Japanese people or life, and a few which look as if there might have been lifted from German children's chromolithographic literature, such as one showing a milk barn. The most exciting of the images is the three vertical panels of a Japanese theater. The way it is composed heightens an illusion of immediacy. Condition: light wear.

Endterischen Handlung 1824 Neue Auflage Half Cloth. Marbled Boards. Custom Cloth Box to
Tall folio, 34 by 21 cm. Title, followed by 41 hand-colored plates. This work was originally published in 1689, and there was also an 1812 printing. This copy used the original woodcut plates, and the hand-coloring palette and style is consistent with that of the seventeenth century, lending an antiquarian authenticity to the edition. They are woodcuts by Elias Porzelius, mostly after designs by Susanne Maria Sandrart (1658-1716), the relatively rare known female artist of the time. The plates depict all the stages of life, from birth to death, and many depicting the various professions, including tailor, cobbler, baker, butcher, paper maker, bookbinder, cartwright or barrel-maker, dyer, weaver, stonecutter, coachmaker, house painter, saddler, locksmith, , blacksmith, carpenter, clown, etc. Particularly charming are the plates of acrobats and a sleigh procession. None of the illustrations are static -- they depict activity, and a sense of movement and things happening applies to every plate. Not infrequently there is even activity in the background. This applies to the several plates that cover a soldier's life, including an army on the move or at an encampment when soldiers in the foreground are playing dice and others farther back are kibitzing. Some of the illustrations have touches of humor, and they all are suffused with humanity and a Rococo gracefulness in their composition and movement. The hand-coloring has a certain courseness, as actually is period appropriate to coloring of the seventeenth century in this kind of book. Pictorial label on front, laid onto marbled boards, with title of "Bilderbuch fur Kinder". Light wear to binding. Modern cloth box. An overall beautiful children's book that should speak to any antiquarian.

Dame Crump and Her Pigs: Their Deeds and Misdeeds
17 Dame Crump and Her Pigs: Their Deeds and Misdeeds

Das Schwesterchen
18 Das Schwesterchen
1920 Stiff Wraps Very Good
8vo. 21 by 17 cm. Unpaginated, 30 leaves, with twelve silhouette drawings, four of which have some slightly crudely added color to the precise black ink, and facing each sihouette is orginal verse handwritten in Sütterlin Schrift, which makes it difficult for us to read fully although it is done with a highly regular, neat hand. But even excluding the poetry, the sihouettes are very appealing and we assume are original, although we can't prove that they aren't copied from something else. These drawings appear to tell the story of one child, Hans. We first see him in a typical day. We see his house, his watching other children frolicking, his being instructed by his mother, his kneeling in prayer, an angel descending to him while he sleeps. Is he praying for a baby sister? Next an infant is born, and the mother is nursing the baby as in another illustration, the father is counseling his son about the newborn. In the final illustration the boy is playing with his younger sister. Light soiling to the wraps.

1845 Romantic Cartonnage Near Fine
Exceptional ornate romantic cartonnage binding. N.d., circa 1840s. Slightly oblong, 7 by 5.75 inches, 17 by 14 cm. With sixteen hand-colored plates of children mostly playing. Gumuchian 291 indicates 18 plates, so two are apparently missing, although there is no sign of removal or cannibalization in this copy. Depicted are games of blind man's bluff, shooting out with fingers, sledding, marching military-style, crab hunting, hide-and-seek, etc. with a few scenes of juvenile apprehension, quisitiveness or seriousness. As if to underscore the universality of childhood experience, the captions are rendered in four languages: French, German, Italian and English. Perhaps the most special element of this charmer, though, is the exquisite cover that exudes a cross between Second Empire ormulo and a fine doily (or doilie), and features a color illustrated cameo on the rear board. No title, as almost certainly so issued, with front board serving as title. Scarce. Gumuchian 291.

Der Osterhas aus Reisen
20 Der Osterhas aus Reisen
Half cloth (buckram). Decorative paper pasted ont Very Good
Charming whimsical story about an Easter bunny, told in German verse and inimitably illustrated with original watercolors. 8vo. 21 by 17 cm. 50 pages, including title page, with an original watercolor on every page, virtually all of which are between a half to three-quarters of the page. The bunny decides to make a journey, using his eggs as currency along the way. On the trip he encounters various obstacles and threats such as a giant and a dragon, but he also meets Snow White and the seven dwarves, Hansel and Gretel, and the like. Before the trip is over he visits Africa. He gets back home just in the nick of time for Easter and to lay new Easter eggs for the children in the area. The narrative is very much secondary to the bright winsome illustrations and the lilting verse.
