With time on our hands during the Coronavirus lockdown, we are reviewing the prices of some of our older stock and adjusting prices of books to ensure that they are the most attractive offering in the marketplace, as it is a reality of the antiquarian market for books that less expensive and mid-level material the trend has been inexorably downward, to the chagrin of booksellers and to the benefit of collectors.  Consequently, we have slashed prices anywhere between 20 percent and 60 percent of these books we have had listed for five years or more.  So we hope that anyone visiting the site might find something that might have become overpriced but now legitimately qualifies as a bargain.

Wallpaper Sample Folio
11 Wallpaper Sample Folio
Germany 1917
German wallpaper book featuring Art Nouveau or Jugendstil era wallpapers, with base papers presented in sets with suggested borders and/or complementary papers. No company name given. Date stamped on FEP. The thick folio is comprised with well over 100 sets of paper, or full panels, with sets including up to a half dozen other papers cut in small dimensions. These small swatches are every bit as interesting as the large samples, and the combinations implied should also have interest for what they have to say about decorative taste of the era. The patterns contained herein offer an intriguing mix of those that would widely be regarded as dated today and others that are very much akin to papers currently available. It is impossible to generalize about these papers which include stripes, florals, , geometrics, and combinations of these. Perhaps one point that can be distilled is that a certain formality tends to pervade the papers notwithstanding the languidity thought to characterize Art Nouveau, but this merely demonstrates that tastes did not move in lockstep with heralded fashionable movements when it came to domestic decoration. Over 13 inches tall and 9 inches across, the folio is in very good state of preservation. There are two papers which are torn with only small portions remaining by the spine, and it is possible other papers have vanished, although it should be apparent the total amount of loss can not much exceed that which has occurred since the binder is quite full. Soome light shelf wear and rubbing to the boards which are a patterned paper paste-down.

19 Clouston, R. S. English Furniture and Furniture Makers of the 18th Century. Illustrated
London Hurst and Blackett 1906 First Cloth Very Good
xii, 362, [2] pp. Useful source because chapters devoted not just to the likes of Chippendale, Hepplewhite, Sheraton and Robert Adam, but also to Robert Manwaring, Ince and Mayhew, Mattias Lock, Robert and Richard GIllow, and others, designers who also were influential with their pattern or design books as well as in the case most obviously of Gillows, actual manufacturing. Also written in an almost conversational style, notwithstanding what now might come across as a quaintness of phrasing, inviting to the non-specialist. Throughout photographic illustrations of furniture and patterns. This is a comparatively rare title, not to be confused with a somewhat similarly titled book by Kate Clouston. Some shelfwear to green cloth. Slight fraying of the cloth at the spine extremities. Tight, with clean age-toned pages. Bookplate of W.R. Grace on FEP.
