With time on our hands during the Coronavirus lockdown, we are reviewing the prices of some of our older stock and adjusting prices of books to ensure that they are the most attractive offering in the marketplace, as it is a reality of the antiquarian market for books that less expensive and mid-level material the trend has been inexorably downward, to the chagrin of booksellers and to the benefit of collectors.  Consequently, we have slashed prices anywhere between 20 percent and 60 percent of these books we have had listed for five years or more.  So we hope that anyone visiting the site might find something that might have become overpriced but now legitimately qualifies as a bargain.

1 "State Caterpillars, or Members of the Plot Club." [together with] An Account of the Proceedings Against Her Majesty Queen Caroline . . . Bound Collection of Caricature Cards Inspired by the Divorce Trial of George the Fourth and Queen Caroline
London J. Turner 1820 Full Sprinkled Sheep Near Fine
The principal item in this set is a bound collection of 24 hand-colored caricature cards that were inspired by the divorce proceedings brought by George the Fourth against his wife, Queen Caroline. The trial and its ignominious lead-up of libels, charges and counter-charges, was a scandal of the day that today would have produced endless fodder for the tabloids and would certainly now be dubbed, "the trial of the century" or "the divorce of the century." Because it involved the king, the trial was held in the House of Lords, which ultimately rebuffed the king's petition. Caroline, though, passed away shortly thereafter.

Nature and Art (2 Volumes Bound in one)
2 Nature and Art (2 Volumes Bound in one)
London Day and Son, Limited Hardcover Very Good Plus
1866 and 1867, 2 volume publication bound in one. These were the only two issues of the publication. iv, 252, iv, 196 pp. Over 50 color chromolithographs, missing frontis chromo to 1866 volume. The main point of this publication was to demonstrate the potential for the new form of color printing, chromolithography. The diverse range of articles thus facilitated the rendering of a similarly broad range of illustration: botanical, zoological, travel related, decorative arts, etc. Also, some of the illustrations are similar or the same of ones found in other publications, such as the plate of chickens for an article by W. B. Tegetmeier who also did a much sought after plate book on poultry. Other than the one missing plate, this copy is in near fine condition. It is tight and clean, with quarter buckram over marbled boards for the binding and the wrap covers (title pages) bound in. Some minor wear to the binding.

A Survey, Beerbohm, Max
17 Beerbohm, Max A Survey
London William Heinemann 1921 First Edition Cloth Very Good
4to. 26 by 19 cm. 52 plates of the famous and celebrated, many of whom were among the literati, with a few politicians thrown in, as well as a few with no known personage but satirizing some current in society. Thus found here are unforgettable send-ups of Lloyd George, Gordon Craig, Sidney Webb, Lord Balfour, Lytton Strachey, and many others. But also in this collection are caricatures cleverly treating more abstract subject matter, such as the future as beheld by the 18th century, the 19th century and the 20th century. In the first two of this triplex series Beerbohm is commenting on the lack of human imagination as to what the future may bring. All the drawings have the inimitable Beerbohm style that remains fresh and droll, even when one doesn't necessarily know the subject or fully know what exactly Beerbohm intended to skewer. Captions on tissue guards. Slight sunning of the spine. Pressure dings at spine extremities, with a small crinkle touching corner of front board. English Literature
