With time on our hands during the Coronavirus lockdown, we are reviewing the prices of some of our older stock and adjusting prices of books to ensure that they are the most attractive offering in the marketplace, as it is a reality of the antiquarian market for books that less expensive and mid-level material the trend has been inexorably downward, to the chagrin of booksellers and to the benefit of collectors.  Consequently, we have slashed prices anywhere between 20 percent and 60 percent of these books we have had listed for five years or more.  So we hope that anyone visiting the site might find something that might have become overpriced but now legitimately qualifies as a bargain.

Broadside advertisement for radical novel of 1890s:
2 Broadside advertisement for radical novel of 1890s: "Waiting for the Signal. The Great Political Novel. Literary Sensation of the Age" Novel by Henry O. Morris
Chicago Schulte Publishing Co. 1897 NA Near Fine
Broadside measures 43.5 by 26.5 cm, and is printed on one side. Distinctive in the promotion is the use of alleged "Unfavorable Comments" from Eastern plutocrats such as Henry Flagler, who was a real person -- a founder of Standard Oil, and later probably the most significant developer of the east coast of Florida, and specifically, St. Augustine and Palm Beach. Broadside folds into a small envelope, included here.

8 Cooper, James Fenimore Excursions in Switzerland
Paris Baudry's European Library 1836 Quarter Calf Good
8vo - over 7¾. xii, 323 pp. Organized as series of letters, 30 in all, which was a common structure for travel writing during the early 19th century. Here the already world famous American novelist -- the first to achieve such renown -- sets his acute eye on Switzerland, which was becoming one of the most popular countries on the Grand Tour by American and English travelers with the new found appreciation of the Alps and the development of mountain-climbing as a sport. Because of Cooper's observational skills, this work can be treated as a primary source for aspects of Swiss culture and society at the time, as it was a good supplement to the early travel guides, which this, strictly speaking, was not, for such travelers. Quarter calf over blue marbled boards. Rubbing and soilage to boards. Binding still tight. Marbled endpapers. Some light foxing and soilage but generally clean. A good copy.

10 Harris, Joel Chandler Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings, with an Introduction By Thomas Nelson Page

4to - over 9¾. xxii, 265 pp. 12 full page illustrated plates. The Gift Edition, with (1) on final text page. With many text illustrations of Brer Rabbit, Brer Wolf and the whole cast. Every page of the stories themselves has decorative framing of branches forming smaller cameo compartments with different members of the cast shown in each such frame, and while the decoration repeats itself, there are several templates so there is variety from one page to the next. Green decorated cloth binding has a lot of soiling and dampstain. Wear along edges, corner. Some foxing in the preliminaries, but most text pages are clean. The binding is tight, with new endpapers inserted.

Plain Language from Truthful James. The Heathen Chinee . . ., Harte, Bret. Joseph Hull, illustrator
11 Harte, Bret. Joseph Hull, illustrator Plain Language from Truthful James. The Heathen Chinee . . .
Chicago Western News Company 1870 First Edition, First Printing Full Morocco Very Good
Uncommon to find in the hand-colored version. 8vo. 22.5 by 18 cm. Nine hand-colored plates of light narrative verse of card players avenging themselves on a Chinese cheat. Obviously politically incorrect as it plays into negative stereotypes and distrust of the Chinese who first came to the American West in numbers to build the transcontinental railroad. All plates are first printing except 6, which is the second state. BAL 7246. In this copy the separately issued cards have been mounted onto a light card stock and bound in full blue morocco. The binding is rubbed along the joints, somewhat dry on the spine and has other wear. Tight and clean within.

18 Irving, Washington. Illustrated by F. O. C. Darley The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gents. Author's Revised Edition
New York George P. Putnam 1849 Paper mache, mother--of-pearl boards Very Good
Unusual mother-of-pearl paper mache binding! 8vo. 22 by 16 cm. 465 pp. Woodcut illustrations and steel engravings. TEG. Front cover has a charming romantic centerpiece and the caption below says "Sunnyside", the name of Irving's Tarrytown estate, but we have to say that we do not see in the picture an image that is recognizably Irving's mansion. The rear cover has a gilt and red geometric floral device as a centerpiece. The front paper mache board has considerable craquelature, the rear, less so. Gilt decoration on cloth spine is faded. Joints are fairly heavily rubbed. Flattened creases to the early pages. Age toning throughout.
