With time on our hands during the Coronavirus lockdown, we are reviewing the prices of some of our older stock and adjusting prices of books to ensure that they are the most attractive offering in the marketplace, as it is a reality of the antiquarian market for books that less expensive and mid-level material the trend has been inexorably downward, to the chagrin of booksellers and to the benefit of collectors.  Consequently, we have slashed prices anywhere between 20 percent and 60 percent of these books we have had listed for five years or more.  So we hope that anyone visiting the site might find something that might have become overpriced but now legitimately qualifies as a bargain.

Album with green felt binding and silver foil onlays and original artwork within
1 Album with green felt binding and silver foil onlays and original artwork within
Salzburg, Austria 1813-1815 Felt. Decorated paper slipcase. Very Good
Oblong, 9 by 14 cm. 12 leaves, a few with content on both sides, and each having an artwork of some kind. Five of these are watercolors applied directly to the paper (we would say original watercolors, although two are common images and so might well be copies), one pencil drawing, four hand-colored prints, one cut-out silhouette, and arguably the most interesting of all, embroidery into the paper, with the image thus on both sides of the paper (we are counting this as one piece). We would describe the album as a fairly typical example of a Germanic album amicorum of the period -- the Napoleonic era, or more loosely, the Biedermeier period -- with the textual entries written invariably in neat yet now inscrutable hands -- the style of cursive writing is now obscure. The original pictorial content is also of a high quality, not that that is also not fairly typical of the genre. Again, we would consider the embroidered specimen, which is of folk art-ish flowers and a hummingbird and sun, as the most unique. Other imagery is of flowers, a bucolic landscape, a funereal landscape with an urned monument at its center, as the norm. In fact, the silhouette is also a roughly similar funereal landscape. The other special aspect of this album is the green felt binding. The centerpieces are of a Roman chariots made of silver foil -- there is a slight variation to the image between the front and the rear cover, and around the perimeter of both sides is a silver foil tracery of flowers contained within a narrow band. The slipcase, which is also period, has also restrained classical decoration, in this case the center pictorial cameo is of seraphs. The slipcase is moderately soiled, and there is wear to the album itself. Minor loss to the silver foil.

Stockholm P. A. Norstedt & Söner 1837 First Hardcover. Paper pastedown. Very Good
Scarce, with only copy found on OCLC at the National Library of Sweden. 16mo. 107 by 88 mm. Unpaginated, 48 pp. Four hand-colored plates depicting a young couple. The plates capture the Biedermeier, high Romantic, sensibility perfectly. Lovely paper pastedown binding, with intricate combining of decorative motives we associate with the period. Moderate wear to the cover, with a distinct diagonal crease line in the upper corner. Still a handsome binding.

Austrian Album with original pencil drawings and cut-outs
3 Austrian Album with original pencil drawings and cut-outs
Salzburg, Wien, etc. 1841-1845 Full Leather Box Very Good
Oblong, 9 by 16 cm. 24 leaves of content, 12 of which have original artwork. Two of the specimens of artwork are delicate folk art-ish cut-outs -- one, a seraph surrounded by a wreath, the other, a brown tree. The rest are pencil drawings, a few qualifying as exquisite miniatures. Of these, one is of a bridge and castle, another, a lodge atop a hill -- this one being executed with a folk art sensibility. One of the remaining images is of a barefoot beggar in a long coat. Especially pleasing to us is a drawing of a dagger of sorts inserted diagonally through a laurel. Such albums would appear incomplete without the requisite tombstone or monument and landscape with ruins, and both are present here. The album overall is fairly typical of the more attractive sort of Biedermeier period album amicorum. In this case, the box is especially lovely, with its inlays of red leather and extensive gilt ornamentation, not to mention its gilt edging. Also some blank sheets, with a ribbon pull housed within. Moderate wear generally.

Blätter der Freundschaft. Album Amicorum from the Biedermeier Era with several examples of bead work
4 Blätter der Freundschaft. Album Amicorum from the Biedermeier Era with several examples of bead work
1823-1829 Full Morocco. Slipcase. Very Good
1820s. Oblong, 12 by 20.5 cm. Unpaginated, 55 pages with content, fourteen of which contain original artwork, and two of which have locks of hair attached. Of the original artwork, three are floral illustrations created by the laying of fine beads. The remainder of the artwork is very well-executed watercolors as typify such albums: bouquets, flowers, monuments, a tree stump with a floral vine wrapped around it, etc. Text entries are in German and Danish. We believe the morocco on the spine and the boards is all original, although the spine is a different color and the gilt border decoration on the orange leather of the boards looks trimmed -- a close examination shows that the decoration actually carries over to the maroon spine band. Soiling to the leather. Abrasions to the marbled paper of the slipcase. General wear otherwise. One specimen of artwork loose, and probably always so.

Les Capitales de l'Europe. Promenades Pittoresques, Malo, Charles
6 Malo, Charles Les Capitales de l'Europe. Promenades Pittoresques
Paris Marcilly Fils Aine. Imprimerie de A. Firmin Didot 1829 First Blindstamped cartonnage cloth. Decorative box. Very Good
Scarce as a complete set of eight volumes in the original box. (None such indicated on OCLC First Search, with up to two institutions having the individual booklets, and none, for example, coming up as possessing Constantinople.) Each of the books concerns one capital: Rome, St. Petersbourg, Berlin, Vienne, Constantinople, Madrid, Paris, and Londres. Each book is 12mo, 152 by 95 mm, and 36 pp., with a hand-colored frontis depicting a lovely view of the particular city. Outer box is 22 by 17 cm, and 3 cm deep. Box has some soiling on the paper pastedown of lid top, and gilt band missing on most of one side and not quite a half of another side to the top of the lid. Still, the box retains structural integrity and its overall decorative panache. The booklets themselves are all well-preserved, with the blindstamping sharp and fresh. A few of the covers have a touch of soiling, but overall they read as clean. Most of the volumes have no or just a few incidental tiny fox marks, with one or two volumes having slightly more foxing, but even these volumes are unlikely to disconcert.

Biedermeier-Wünsche... Fünfzig Kleinfolio-Tafeln in Licht-u. Farbendruck nebst illustriertem Text, Pazaurek, Gustav E.
7 Pazaurek, Gustav E. Biedermeier-Wünsche... Fünfzig Kleinfolio-Tafeln in Licht-u. Farbendruck nebst illustriertem Text
Stuttgart Julius Hoffmann 1908 First Limited Edition Cloth folder Near Fine
No. 165 of 400 copies. Oblong, 26.5 by 33.5 cm. Booklet, running 25 pages, and 50 separate or loose plates, each with a number of images of Biedermeier cards, especially those with movable parts, and other ephemera from that period. One plate with color chromolithographic images; otherwise, the plates are in black and white. This is the indispensable and go-to source still for Biedermeier cards. Biedermeier relates to a period of general stability in Europe between Napoleon's defeat in 1815 and the Revolution of 1848 and specifically pertains to the Teutonic world (the German-speaking areas) where the upper bourgeois was culturally ascendant and superceding Royal and aristocratic patronage as the engine of high cultural development. The Biedermeier cards were a rage, with their intricate, clever mechanisms and pretty hand-colored imagery. Light wear to the outer folio folder. Generally clean.
