Charles & Co. Catalogue. May, 1937
1 Charles & Co. Catalogue. May, 1937
New York 1937 Leatherette Very Good
Attractive culinary catalogue from a prestigious high-end gourmet grocer in New York, one that began in 1848 and continued in business into the 1980s (when it was acquired by Red Apple.) 8vo. 21 by 14 cm. 319 pp. With 8 page supplemental brochure dated September, 1937. The catalogue proper has color plates on both endpapers and two other pages, and many other b/w photos and drawings of products throughout. The outstanding feature of the catalogue aesthetically, though, is its two toned binding, which is high Art Deco, with relief stylized lettering and an image of Hermes! Otherwise, the catalogue is a treasure trove of information on better food products and their pricing back in the 1930s. Condition: fore-edges have light foxing. A few light and minor stains on the binding.

2 Collection of 21 Pieces Original Art Deco Advertising Artwork for a Hardware Store
Brown Hardware Co. 1931-1933 NA Very Good
Striking, sometimes colorful, examples of advertising artwork from 1933. Advertising a wide variety of hardware merchandise, including tool kits, stoves, galvanized ware, bathroom fixtures, fencing, house paint, brushes, sporting equipment (something typically sold at hardware stores back then), etc. as well as holiday promotions for the business. Oblong, 28 by 35.5 cm each. The ads exude the quintessence of the Art Deco aesthetic, then in its heyday, with their pared down, linear and geometric ornamentation, to which are added cutesy illustrations of children, turkeys, etc., as befitting the particular ad. The ads are almost surely all from a single business, although the name of a business, Brown Hardware, only appears on one of the panels, and we are of the view that all the artwork was probably done by a single artist. Condition: moderate wear. The paint remains fresh in appearance.

Renault. L'Automobile de France
4 Renault. L'Automobile de France
Paris Draeger 1932 First edition Metal spiral. Card stock boards, with silver foil Near Fine
With its silver foil pictorially embossed cover and bold interior graphics, an unusually striking automobile catalogue or sales brochure -- even by comparison with other catalogues of the same era, when glossy and resplendent catalogues were something of a norm. One can fairly liken this car brochure to the spectacular sales annuals created by Hollywood studios at the time, Also scarce, with no copies located on OCLC. Folio, 31.5 by 23.5 cm. Unpaginated, [28] pp, with fold-out centerfold, a four page spread, showcasing the Stella car. Profusely illustrated, with a combination of partial color and full color drawings and b/w photos. Besides the sleek classic cars, the brochure also features other, more utilitarian Renault vehicles of the day -- trucks, buses, aviation and marine motors -- and factory views, sometimes arranged into a montage across the page. Some scuffs and flattened dog ear creases on the cover and a few minor spots within. Overall, an exceedingly well-preserved copy of a stunning production, capturing perfectly the beauty of the vehicles of the day.

5 [Faux Books] Deskset Set of Six Faux Books, with a classic Art Deco period bucolic cottage image spanning all the spines, and a dedicated bookrest for the set
Boston Dennison Mfg. Company Paper pastedown on card stock boxes Near Fine
Handsome desk set of faux books! N.d., circa 1940-1942, based on the quintessential image, one represented in paper catalogues of that date. Each volume is a miniature, measuring 6 by 4 cm. The bookcase is 14.5 cm across, 7.5 cm tall and 7 cm deep. Each faux book box is given a volume number and title: Vol. I, Gummed Labels, Vol. II, Rubber Bands, Vol. III, Gummed Patches, Vol. IV, Key Tags, Vol. V, Paper Clips, and Vol. VI, Stamp Container. The boxes open like matchbooks, and all of them are full with what appears their original content other than the Gummed Patches and Stamp Container boxes, which are empty. It is the ensemble, with the matching inclined bookshelf, that makes this such an appealing antique item. See Dubansky, "Blooks", p. 66. The design was introduced in "What's Next" published by Dennison, July/August 1940 and featured in their catalogue for 1942A few dings and other minor wear to the boxes. As a whole entity, near fine.

[Saleman's Sample Album] Méry Hungarian Industry-Arts Budapest
6 [Saleman's Sample Album] Méry Hungarian Industry-Arts Budapest
Hardcover. String ties. Very Good
Probably a salesman's sample album showing original designs for napkins or handkerchiefs, all with decorative, generally colorful and representational artwork. N.d., circa 1930s. Oblong album, 29 by 34 cm. 17 samples, including the one on the front cover, and one sample which is essentially repeated, with minor variations. Stylistically there is considerable variety, from folk art-ish and cartoon-ish to more fluid and fluent Art Deco stylized imagery. We don't know whether Méry was the artist or the name of the company, or both, but clearly these are samples of commercial artwork. That is not pejorative, for the images are delightful, evocative and even humorous and fun at times. Here there is the further intensification of the original watercolors. The papers the large square watercolors are laid on are brittle, as the norm of such albums. Chipping to thw wax paper pastedown on the cover.

[Trade Catalogue] The Montjoy's Pen
9 [Trade Catalogue] The Montjoy's Pen
Barcelona Graficos Casamajo Mid-weight card. Staples and tacks. Very Good
Art Deco panache from the heyday of sleek fountain pens, featuring the Spanish-made Montjoy. N.d., circa 1920s. Folio, 31 by 24 cm. 9 glossy leaves, each following the title with a color image of the pens and pen sets. These color plates are a composite of photo imaging and illustration. We believe that the designer worked off of photos, but with his original work created something with a distinctly soft lens effect and that is definitely something other than a photo. The first of these plates features five colorfully sheathed fountain pens. The following plates showcase desk sets, with the pens rendered in full color, the base of the pen sets and the background desktop and bric-a-brac in a grainy, ghost-like, black and white the plainness of which highlights the visual excitement of the pens themselves. All the plates have green foliate border frames that augment the toniness of the promotion. The first leaf -- the one non-plate -- provides a brief promotional prologue in Spanish. Brief descriptive captions are provided beneath the plate illustrations. Card stock cover with splatter stain in center.

Vingt-Cinq Costumes pour le Théâtre, Barbier, Georges. Preface by Edmond Jaloux. Frontis portrait of Barbier by Charles Martin
10 Barbier, Georges. Preface by Edmond Jaloux. Frontis portrait of Barbier by Charles Martin Vingt-Cinq Costumes pour le Théâtre
Paris Bloch and Meynial 1927 Limited First Edition Heavy Wrappers. Very Good Plus Good Jacket
No. 185 of 275 copies. 4to. 32 by 24 cm. 25 tipped-in pochoir costume plates by Barbier. Lettered tissue guards. Colas 218. The artwork is all dated to the early post-World War One period, into the early 1920s. Captured here is the fantasy spun by the costuming, so at odds with the parsimonious theatrical zeitgeist of the present when it seems so much of classic theater and opera is willfully updated to the unglamorous present day. Not that the costumes here are entirely unrelated to the then contemporary styles -- one can discern the cross-fertilization of costuming with fashion effortlessly, though, through Barbier's fluent presentation. Barbier focuses on the escapist element of theater, and his renderings usher us on this excursion. The plays represented include works by Rostand and Hugo, among others. Original pictorial wrappers. Closed tear of joints by extremities, with the longer tear at the base (about 6 cm in length). Glassine dust jacket mostly intact, but with several tears and chips, especially by the lower portion of the rear cover, and then by the spine extremities and neighboring joints. Frontis portrait of Barbier has flattened cornered crease. Otherwise, the plates, most importantly, are very clean and bright.

La Belle Poule. A l'Enseigne des Mille Pertuis, Fay, Clark(1894-1955)
11 Fay, Clark(1894-1955) La Belle Poule. A l'Enseigne des Mille Pertuis
Folder. Paper pastedown. Very Good
N.d., circa 1930s. Folio, 39 by 29 cm. Eleven plates, including title page, housed in a silver folder. The artwork depicts showgirls and their patrons of the shadowy Parisian nightlife demimonde. The style is very much in the style of George Grosz, who almost certainly was a strong influence on Fay in this project. Here we see the lecherous patrons, generally looking like gluttonous capitalists, and the jaded, lewd showgirls generally in a state of dishabille. Coming across very clearly, though, is their solidarity with one another, and there is a strong whiff of lesbianism in their bond, although it should be emphasized that this is never explicit. The ambivalence of the pieces applies to other aspects of them and is in fact a source of their power. There is also an interracial element to the ladies, with black performers among them. At the time, the free and easy relationship among the races probably had a shock value; one wonders whether indeed this was one venue where racial tensions simply melted away among its denizens. The plates have touches of bright color, with the charcoal shading and crisp pencil lines creating an overall tenebrous, netherworldly atmosphere. Fay was an American illustrator who studied with N.C. Wyeth and became a regular contributor to "The Saturday Evening Post" and "The Delineator". He spent much of his career in and around Paris and London, eventually moving outside of Paris, then London, full-time. Scarce, with the only known copy, and this is of only a single lithograph of the set, at Harvard. Moderate wear and soiling to the metallic silver pastedown on the outside folder. Light soiling in the margin of the title plate.

12 George Goodhue Costume Design. Portfolio of Art Deco Drawings and Sketches Relating to Fashion and Product Design [together with] a draft of a exegesis or short book on color and other technical aspects of fashion
New York presumed 1930s NA Very Good
A collection of 46 original drawings and sketches of various sizes and styles, some explicitly tied to commercial advertising, and others created for a business, or utilitarian purpose. Some of the drawings are fully realized illustrations, while others are in some way incomplete, which doesn't mean that they lack charm or merit. The illustrations cover a broad range, with fashion accounting for at least thirteen of the items and thus the most plentiful, followed by product design work of such things as perfume bottles, lamps, a coffee pot, cigarettes. Outside of commercial art, caricature is the most abundant, with at least nine items that are unquestionably pure caricature. Some of the caricatures are of known figures, such as Shakespeare, George Bernard Shaw, possibly Maurice Chevalier and Mussolini. Most are one head per sheet. One sheet, though, has nine pen and ink drawn heads, including Lincoln, Shirley Temple, Walter Chrysler, Miriam Hopkins, Mae West, William Powell, and Mayor La Guardia. These Goodhue called "Featurtoons" -- as likenesses, they are more detailed than the other line drawings but not as consistently well-done. Yet another type is illustration is cartoon, and this overlaps with caricature but these are not depicting actual people, it would seem, and there may be a little bit of a story or anecdote being told or suggested. There are at least nine of these, most of which are ink drawings but the best is done in color pencil and depicts a mustachioed man with a round head who looks like one of the figures in "Monopoly". There are also non-caricature drawings of people, including a chalk drawing that may be a self-portrait. The styles of the drawings is various, but there is unquestionably an Art Deco, thirties modernist sensibility to the drawings, and if they are not realistic or literal, they tend to have a stylized style one associates with that period. Perhaps one of the best of these is a small pen and ink drawing of an artist at an easel that draws from Cubism while also not being in any sense inscrutable. Charming as well is a bookplate Goodhue designed for himself with playful figures that could have been done by James Thurber. Arguably the principle component of this portfolio is a draft of a semi-technical book on costume and fashion that devotes a considerable amount of space to the theory and influence of color, to texture, and to line. This draft, which is missing a few parts that may never have been done but which appears nonetheless to be close to what the author intended, is 39 pages, single spaced typed, with many illustrations and visual matter interspersed. It reads like a brochure that might well have been distributed by a trade association or a substantial participant in the fashion industry. Sections, by their heading, are "The Theory and Influence of Color and Color Combinations", "Color Wheel", "Color Intensities", "Color Values", "The Effect of Colors and Textures upon Individuals', etc. In terms of illustration, following is a brief synopsis of ones not mentioned above: color pen and ink and watercolor of insects done for a technical manual or the like; a color pencil rendering of a hat on display;

13 Hermant, Abel. Illustrations by Umberto Brunelleschi Phili ou Par-de-la le Bien et le Mal Conte Moral orné d’Aquarelles
Paris Édition de la Guirlande 1921 Limited Edition Half Morocco. Marbled Boards. Near Fine
No 273 of 275 copies, this one on Vergé D'Arches. 4to. 27.5 by 18.5 cm. Unpaginated, about 155 pages. With 12 pochoir plates, and 93 color vignettes dispersed through the text. The pochoir was done by Jean Saudé. The story concerns princes in exile hopping from one grand hostelry to another, a louche lifestyle brought on by the overturning of the old order by the First World War, and the Nouveau Riches and gold-digging Flappers they encounter in the new age of faster automobiles and the like. The illustrations glamorize the new silhouette and streamlined fashions and capture the rage for the fox trot and tango and as always. As always, Brunelleschi shows an affinity for the exotic and a kind of Orientalism. Original wraps are bound in to lovely half-morocco binding. Minor light foxing on the fore-edge. Minimal sunning of the spine. Otherwise, a clean, bright and very handsome copy.
