102 [Leporello] Munchhausen
1948 Leporello Very Good
Six colorful square panels, plus title panel, depicting scenes from the ever-popular picaresque doings or imaginings of the great fictional tall tale teller. 11 cm, or 4 3/8 inches square, the panorama is printed on thick card, and the panels are linked by a substantial cloth. The printing is entirely on one side, except the panel containing the title. There is no publishing information other than the title and data impressed in the rear corner, from which the date of publication is surmised -- one can not be sure that this is the date of publication, but the dating is clearly consistent with the overall production and thus is approximate at the very least. Light soiling of the front and rear.

[Manuscript] Histoire de la Cochonnette
103 [Manuscript] Histoire de la Cochonnette
Christmas, 1944 Hardcover. Cotton toile fabric pasted onto boards Very Good
Charming original story about a clever pig and his rooster and chicken pals, and how they escape becoming their master's Xmas supper and then a ravenous wolf. Oblong, 21.5 by 27.5 cm. Unpaginated, 20 leaves, text and illustrations only on rectos. Eighteen original watercolor illustrations, all but two of which are full page or dominate the page. The watercolors are rendered with a confident simplicity -- these illustrations could easily have appeared in a published children's book. The text is written in a neat cursive. Besides the sweet narrative, we find the toile covers lovely, and also in keeping with the story within. On the front are vignettes of a coq and geese; on the rear, a horse, a dog and seraph, and both covers have a bucolic feel to them. Condition: the toile cover has staining. The interior has moderate wear.

104 [Trade Catalogue] Francesco Beretta & Co., Milano, Stabilimento a Vap.re per l'Industria dei Giuocattoli. Esportazione
Milano Stab. Lit. A. Bertarelli Wraps Near Fine
Truly extraordinary trade catalogue for dolls, games and toys, with many bright chromolithographic color plates of great beauty. N.d., circa 1893. 4to. 28 by 22 cm. 42 plates, the first 28 of which are color plates. This catalogue was issued in conjunction with the company's factory expansion, and shortly following its success at the International Exhibition in Milan, 1891, and the Esposizione Italo-Americano in Genoa the following year. At the former, it received the highest honors, at the latter, a gold medal, and the proprietor, in the one-page prefatory comments -- the only text within the catalogue -- speaks of his extensive clientele in both Italy and America. His plant is pictured on the cover, and indeed shows that this was a business of considerable size for the day. Among the articles showcased are also doll accessories, dollhouses, furniture for dollhouses, rocking horses, billiards, croquet, swings, a puppet theater, performing monkeys, toy weaponry, mechanical toys, toy horses and stables, puppets, etc. We would emphasize that the color in the color plates is especially bright and dazzling, and this is a toy catalogue like none other that we have ever come across. Condition: light soiling and wear to the card thick wraps.

Narran le Maschere, Adami, Giuseppe
111 Adami, Giuseppe Narran le Maschere
Bergamo Insituto Italiano D'Arti Grafiche 1st Edition Hardcover Fine Montedoro, Marco
Book. 4to - over 9 - 12" tall. N.d. Circa 1920s. 148, [1] pp. With 9 tipped-in color plates featuring Arlecchino, Brighella, etc. Interconnected tales inspired by and relating to the Commedia dell'Arte. The plates are of vivid color and full of panache. Nominally juvenalia, these illustrations and accompanying text are even more likely to ingratiate themselves to adults, especially those intrigued by masques and the Venetian Carnavale. Interspersed with the Italian is Venetian and Bergamasco dialect. Montedoro, the illustrator, is an unjustly forgotten or neglected artist (to our knowledge). Other than light soilage on the white cloth, this is a fine copy.

Untitled [The Adventure of the Balloons in Upside Down Land], Alberin (?)
113 Alberin (?) Untitled [The Adventure of the Balloons in Upside Down Land]
NA Fine
Untitled collection of nine original watercolors that tell the story of juvenile balloons sold at a carnival and released into the air, where they find their way into "Upside Down Land". N.d., circa 1946, or in the immediate aftermath of World War Two. The order of the pictures telling the story -- there is no text -- is subject to debate, and one can not be certain that these illustrations represent the fully intended story, whether or not it was ever fully realized by the artist and storyteller. In any case, the balloons lose themselves with the manifold temptations of a candy shop. When outdoors, they are attacked by unsavory "balloon" monsters who puncture one of the balloons, who is then administered to by a balloon doctor who patches the hole. The balloons fly off rejoicing, and they dance a circle in the sky, Whether or not a complete suite of illustrations, there can be no denying the cleverness of the basic premise and the charm and skill by which the illustrations were executed. Not only is no published version of this story known, but also, there is no known story in which the concept of an "Upside Down Land" was used. An imaginary land is a commonplace in juvenile fiction, of course, but the ingeniousness of the Upside Down idea created here is that it allows for the illustrations to be viewed with equal appropriateness from top or from the bottom, and indeed, what is the top or bottom of the page is unanswerable, at least in six of the illustrations. The illustrations also capture a mid-twentieth century milieu superbly well. Nothing is known of the artist other than the name signed in one place, which is also not completely clear but appears to be Alberin. The watercolors are not all the same size but are generally about 27 by 20 cm.

The Happy Annual, Aldin, Cecil and John Hassall
115 Aldin, Cecil and John Hassall The Happy Annual
New York; London, respectively E.P. Dutton & Company; Produced by Carl Hentschel 1st Edition presumed Hardcover Very Good Aldin, Cecil
Book. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. N.d., circa 1910 (date of inscription on FFEP). Very rare title with color, four tone generally, illustrations. Unpaginated, 40 pp including title. A potpourri of stories, poems, and humor. The first part is devoted to a quintessential Aldin subject of dogs and foxhunting entitled The Nursery Harriers: The Story of a Hunt, but with a difference inasmuch as the horse is a hobbyhorse. The final pages of the book are devoted to various children's games of the Middle Ages: bowls, tobogganing, skating, sliding, golf, quintain, cricket, football, etc. Also some illustrated nursery rhymes and snippets of other children's classics (Robinson Crusoe, Aladdin). Throughout delightful and less familiar Aldin illustrations, all 14 by 10 inches in size. Soilage on rear boards and to a lesser extent on front board. Blistering to endpapers. Humpty Dumpty, Aliquis
116 Aliquis Humpty Dumpty
London Tilt & Bogue 1843 Leporello. Card. Cloth spine. Very Good
A novel and fun panorama. Closed, oblong, 8.5 by 24 cm, and its seven panels within are stretchable to 157.5 cm, or about 1.5 meters. Unusual rendering of first four lines of nursery rhyme in five languages besides English --- French, Hebrew, Latin, Greek and German. Supposedly another edition of this, issued by the same publisher, also featured Italian, absent here, and perhaps the entirety of verse also in French. The whole verse runs as an upper caption for the panorama. Front board is foxed and soiled. The backs of four folds discreetly reinforced. Scattered light soiling to the panels, but overall bright and vivid.
