107 Maurois, Andre. Illustrations by Ferdinand Fargeot Ariel ou la Vie de Shelley
Paris Editions Mornay 1932 Limited Edition Full Decorated Calf Very Good
8vo. 20 by 15.5 cm. 329 pp. Original wraps bound in. Since there is no number to this copy, it is presumed this was one of the 55 copies produced "hors commerce". Regardless, the full calf binding is special, with its watercolor cameo centerpiece of a sailboat on the front, the floral vignette on the back, and portrait of Shelley on the spine. Alas, the calf is heavily rubbed along the joints, with starting by the lower rear joint, and the spine is darkened and heavily rubbed. Inside, the book is clean and fresh, with the color illustrations uniformly a delight.

Oeuvres Completees De Moliere Avec Les Notes De Tous Les Commentateurs Edition Publiee Par L. Aime-Martin (8 volumes), Moliere
111 Moliere Oeuvres Completees De Moliere Avec Les Notes De Tous Les Commentateurs Edition Publiee Par L. Aime-Martin (8 volumes)
Paris Chez Lefevre, Libraire 1824 Hardcover Very Good Chez Ant. Aug. Renouard; Chardon (printer), F. Lignon; Simoret, Etc.
Book. 8vo - over 7. All volumes tight and generally clean inside. Minor shelfwear and rubbing to bindings, a little stronger on some of the edges of the five raised bands on the spines, not affecting materially shelf appeal. Each play accompanied with a full page copper engraved plate, measuring 9.5 by 6 inches, and these are by various artists and printers, too numerous to list in the entirety. Typical offsetting of these plates onto facing pages. Some foxing, never disconcerting, on the backs of a few plates and in the plate margins. This is, overall, at least a very good copy, and also a sturdy set that notwithstanding its age, one can very comfortably read from without apprehension.

France Son Histoire, Montorgueil, G. [Georges] Illustrated by Job [Jacque Onfray de Breville]
114 Montorgueil, G. [Georges] Illustrated by Job [Jacque Onfray de Breville] France Son Histoire
Paris Boivin et Cie. 1901 Decorated Cloth Good
Flamboyant Job illustrations set to colortype. Folio. 36 by 28 cm, 14 by 11 inches. N.d., but probably 1901 or a few years earlier. Boivin released three different editions of this work in the years 1897, 1898 and 1901, each with different covers. The full title was "France Son Histoire Jusqu'en 1789", and this aptly describes the contents of the work, so it is assumed that the latter part of the title was lopped off in a later printing. See Robichon, Job ou l'Histoire illustree, p. 149. Wear to the corners and edges of the binding. Otherwise clean and tight.

115 Montreuil, Gibert.
Paris Chez Silvestre 1834 First Limited Edition Thus Full Calf, with Blindstamping, Gilt Decoration, et Fine
Eight spectacular hand-colored and illuminated plates on vellum. No. 20 of a limited edition of 200 total, and one of 15 copies on Hollande paper. 8vo. 22.5 by 15 cm, 9 by 6 inches. lxiv, [4 leaves], 334, [2] pp. Each of the plates is accompanied by a plain black and white lithographic version. The hand-colored versions easily pass for actual illuminated paintings, and indeed, the hand-colorist did not merely fill in color but also made some subtle changes to the illustration so that the hand-colored version does not match exactly the black and white one. The illumination on the vellum is of an uncommon precision and beauty so as to read as tantamount to manuscript, and the work is unquestionably superior to what one would find in the better works of Henry Shaw, who contemporaneously was producing important books on the topic of illuminated manuscripts. The "Roman de la Violette" is based on the same story as Shakespeare's "Cymbeline". The binding of this copy is an exquisite example of French blindstamped leather of the period, with Greek-style ornament in the large centerpiece of the boards and a Gothic ornamental diaper impressed onto the spine, which also has raised bands. The binding has a few dings and tiny pinprick losses, and the joints have a slight goopiness of a earlier restoration, but the binding still comes off as very handsome. The volume itself fits into a custom slipcase with leather fringe and a wide ribbon pull. This copy had once belonged to the Ermitage in St. Petersburg.

Le Docteur Rameau, Ohnet, George. Original watercolors by P. de Crauzat
120 Ohnet, George. Original watercolors by P. de Crauzat Le Docteur Rameau
Paris Paul Ollendorff 1889 Limited First Edition Half Decorated Morocco Very Good
No. 4 of 8, and one of five on Japanese vellum. 8vo. 345 pp. An extraordinary copy illustrated at the beginning and end of each chapter with original watercolors by de Crauzat, who signed his illustrations. Together with a full page title watercolor, de Crauzat did 25 for this work. These illustrations capture perfectly the sentimental romance of the story itself, and each lays fair claim to being a miniature masterpiece. For an artist as accomplished as this de Crauzat to undertake such a project is truly unique, and thus this copy is special in the wider universe of published fiction literature. The binding, too, is an object of beauty with inlays of floral detail into the gilt spine decoration. The half green morocco has one flaw -- the front board has been reattached at the hinge, and the repair is apparent to the eye. Minor wear to the binding elsewhere. FFEP is cracked by hinge. Otherwise, interior is clean and tight.
