With time on our hands during the Coronavirus lockdown, we are reviewing the prices of some of our older stock and adjusting prices of books to ensure that they are the most attractive offering in the marketplace, as it is a reality of the antiquarian market for books that less expensive and mid-level material the trend has been inexorably downward, to the chagrin of booksellers and to the benefit of collectors.  Consequently, we have slashed prices anywhere between 20 percent and 60 percent of these books we have had listed for five years or more.  So we hope that anyone visiting the site might find something that might have become overpriced but now legitimately qualifies as a bargain.

Original Watercolor and Pencil Drawing for a Fashion Plate Featuring Two Women in Gowns, Pauquet, Hippolyte
121 Pauquet, Hippolyte Original Watercolor and Pencil Drawing for a Fashion Plate Featuring Two Women in Gowns
1858 NA Very Good
Signed and dated February 2, 1858 by artist. Measuring 25 by 21.5 cm. Pauquet's work in printed form is easy to find; the original sketches are not. Pauquet's work appeared in various fashion periodicals and he also published "Modes et Costumes Historiques" around 1860. He was best known for fashion illustration, but he did other types of book illustration as well. A little light margin soiling. The painting was formerly pasted onto something else, and so on the back of remnants in the corner of this.

122 Peter Simon Pallas Viaggio di Signor Pallas in Diverse Province dell'Imperio Russo Sino ai Confini della China Compendiati dal Cav. Compagnoni Con tavole in rame colorate (5 Vols.) [nella serie intitotita "Raccolta di Viaggi Dopo Quelli di Cook" esequita tanto per mare quanto per terra, e non pubblicati fin ora in lingua italiana]
Milano Tipografia Sonzogno e Comp. 1816 First Edition thus Wraps Very Good
12mo. (18 by 11 cm.) Five volumes. With 22 plates, most hand-colored. This is the first Italian version of Pallas' travels to Russia. The costume plates are richly colored and lovely. The leaves have a nice rag content and are thus quite clean, even uncommonly so, compared to most Italian publications of the early nineteenth century. The work is complete as of itself; it is a part of a larger series of travel journals translated into Italian at the time. In this series, this book constitutes Tomo XIII. This copy has the original wraps. These have creases and soiling. Still, they can be regarded as well-preserved and of interest from the perspective of publishing practices of the era.

Le Costume Historique (6 volumes), Racinet, Albert Charles Auguste
124 Racinet, Albert Charles Auguste Le Costume Historique (6 volumes)
Paris Firmin-Didot et Cie. 1888 First Half Morocco Fine
Elephant Folio - over 15. This is the much less common folio version of this work, with each of 6 volumes measuring 16.5 by 12.5 inches, or 42 by 32 cm. With 500 plates, 300 using color chromolithography. This copy is about as as good as it gets. Modern half morocco over green boards is pristine. Five thick raised bands on each spine, with gilt lettered labels. Traditional Victorian endpapers. All bindings are tight. Interiors are about as clean as can be, notwithstanding the most occasional and lightest of speck. This is one of the most elaborate and detailed costume books ever produced, if not the single most ambitious such work. It is still an invaluable reference, but it functions fabulously well simply as visual entertainment, and the plates contained herein have found their ways to many a print shop where they have been framed and later hung on walls as decoration. As not uncommon among costume books, Racinet also serves up a healthy helping of accessories and interiors throughout the ages. Like Racinet's other masterpiece, "L'Ornement Polychrome", the chromolithography of this work is exceptionally brilliant.

London W. T. Gilling; printed by G. Schulze 1822 First Half Morocco over Marbled Boards Very Good Plus
4to, 11 by 7.5", 28 by 19 cm. With 30 exquisite hand-colored plates. Lipperheide 907. Colas 2530. Shelfwear and rubbing to contemporary half red morocco and marbled boards. Some finger soiling to margins of plates and text leaves. Some foxing of blank preliminaries. Still, tissue guards intact and overall quite clean, with plates fresh, bright, and like small fine paintings, and the pictures are more richly detailed than the typical aquatint costume books of the same vintage. The illustrations also capture perfectly the folkish, even naive, simplicity associated with Swiss culture at the time yet with elegance. There is, in other words, no crudeness or coarseness to the figures depicted. A most extraordinary achievement, comparable to the paintings of Lory of the same period.

History of the Fan, Rhead, G. Woolliscroft
126 Rhead, G. Woolliscroft History of the Fan
J. B. Lippiincott Company; Kegan Paul, Trench Trubner & Co. 1910 First Cloth Very Good
Folio. Limited first edition, this is #43 of 180 copies for sale in the United States. xix + 311 pp. Lippincott of Philadelphia in association with Kegan French of London. 27 color plates, 100 more in half-tone. Rebacked, with original cloth of spine mounted onto replacement cloth which matches in color. While ex-lib copy, evidence of it is overall discreet, with unobtrusive bookplate on FFP and small pasted tape on lower spine. Pages and interior entirely clean, and tight. Because of heaviness of book, inner hinges in front and back reinforced with clear tape. Two straight lines running down spine. Overall, VG. This was first and very comprehensive study of its subject and remains an exemplary exegesis on a niche in the decorative arts. Book is extremely heavy and so postage may need to be recalculated, especially for export.

Un Air Embaume Parfume le Monde L'Or de Rigaud. sa firme ses parfums, Richepin, Jean, author of introductory poem entitled "Fleurs"
127 Richepin, Jean, author of introductory poem entitled "Fleurs" Un Air Embaume Parfume le Monde L'Or de Rigaud. sa firme ses parfums
Wraps Very Good
Scarce, with no copies located on OCLC FirstServe. N.d., circa 1914, when the fragrance "Un Air Embaume" was first introduced. 8vo. 24 by 21 cm. Unpaginated, 12 leaves, plus tissue guards and wraps, with nine of those being color plates. Rigaud as a parfumier dates back to 1852. At the turn of the century it created and marketed fragrances associated with celebrities of the day -- one fragrance was named after the opera star "Mary Garden" -- and the company might well have been a pioneer in such tie-ins. The company also consciously pursued the Anglo market, and capitalized on the Gallic vogue at the time for things English, by naming a number of its products in English. The company remains in business today, but its emphasis it now on home or ambient fragrances. In this glossy marketing brochure, intended as much to build the exotic, luxurious mystique of the companies fragrances as to peddle its specific products, the color plates capture perfectly the sinewy, rich aesthetic of the day, with equal amounts of Art Nouveau elegance; the overripe, almost lurid colors and styles of the Jugendstil, or the Teutonic version of Art Nouveau; and the softer, Rococo frivolity and flirty lightness epitomized by a Fragonard or Boucher. The Richepin poem that serves as a preface evokes the hedonistic, possibly decadent, sensuality that is the mood, or mix of moods, of the illustrations that follow. And so the names of perfumes are Prince Igor, Marthe Chenal (a French opera singer, who like Mary Garden, was particularly associated with Jules Massenet), Pres de Vous, Muses des Bois, l'heure charmante, lilas de Rigaud, Oeillet d'Andalousie, Mary Garden, and des Roses. The cream cover has foxing. Within the brochure is clean.

Eleganza Femminile, Rigone
128 Rigone Eleganza Femminile
1911 Cloth. Leather strap clasp. Ribbon tie binding. Near Fine
Eleven masterfully executed humorous fashion plate caricatures mostly satirizing over-the-top hats. Oblong, 23 by 32.5 cm. The original artwork is done on white sheets which are then mounted onto the black album card, one caricature per leaf, with tissue guards for each album leaf. The artwork is all pen-and-ink and watercolored. With most of the renderings, the oversized hats entirely overwhelms the wearer's face. In all but one, there is a single fashionable, but not necessarily prepossessing, women. In the final caricature the woman, this one very comely and wearing roller skates, is shown warding off suitors, two of whom are floored, a third being chased by a policeman. The artwork here is extraordinary. Whoever Rigone was, he/she was of professional level, and these caricatures together make for a brilliant, delightful suite, full of color and panache. And they work best as a suite -- the whole is greater than the sum of the individual parts.

Paris Chez Deroy 1796 Quarter Calf, Speckled Boards Very Good
4to. 25.5 by 20 cm. Two frontises (one with engraving, other hand-colored plate), title, [2], 221, [3] pp. With 50 hand-colored aquatint plates, the most exciting not merely costume but showing military and equestrians on move or in action. (And first frontis is B/W.) Colas 1298. The timing of the publication was significant -- it was the fourth year of the Directoire, and so noted on the title. Revolutionary France drew inspiration from Ancient Rome in terms of its republicanism, its muscular outlook, and its aesthetics (although this was a trend that certainly predated the Revolution). Note that this work is encountered without coloring most often. Moderate wear to the binding, and scattered light foxing and soiling within.

134 Sand, Maurice Masques et Bouffons (Comedie Italienne) Texte et Dessins Par Maurice Sand, Gravures Par A. Manceau, Preface Par George Sand (2 volumes)
Paris A. Levy Fils 1862 Quarter Morocco, pebbled cloth boards Very Good Sand, Maurice
2 volumes, 4to. 28 by 19 cm. viii, 356, [2], 384 pp. 50 hand-colored plates featuring the stock characters of the improvisational Theatre Italienne such as Harlequino, Arlechino, Pulcinella, Colombine, Pagliaccio, Pierrot, Pantalon, L'Apothicaire, Le Notaire, Scaramuccia, Pasquariello, etc. Nowadays these characters are most familiar to opera-goers thanks to the comical works of Donizetti, Mascagni, Busoni, Mozart, etc. Most of these characters grew out of the roaming theatrical troupes that originated in Italy of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The costume and basic personality of the character remained stable from one performance to the next, but within those parameters the characters in a troupe, usually following the broad contours of a story line, would improvise bringing in buffonery perhaps relating to the events of the day, the specific venue where they were appearing, or whatever else might spring into their mind on the spur of the moment. In the eighteenth century the free form went into decline, replaced by more scripted plays, but its influence is very evident in the plays of Goldoni, Moliere (who worked well before the form vanished) and besides the opera buffa, early twentieth century Vaudeville, ballet, and more current comedy. Also, the costume from the Theatre Italienne has never failed to excite enthusiasm, and thus it is often celebrated in the decorative arts, as perhaps most magnificently, in porcelain, beginning in the eighteenth century with Meissen, Nymphenburg and many other makes. Today the style of Harlequin or Arlecchino continue to be emulated in clothes design with some regularity. This two volume celebration of the costume and characters of this theater was written by Maurice Sand, who was the son of the novelist George Sand, who wrote the preface. Maurice Sand (1823 -1889) was an accomplished illustrator and writer in his own right. Occasional soiling, sometimes toning around perimeter outside of tissue guards, which have survived remarkably well. Rubbing along joints, and moderate wear of boards. Very handsome marbled painting of edges.

The initials "V.A." are stamped on both front boards; these initials probably refer to Victor Gifford Audubon Jr. (1847-1915), the artist's grandson. Condition: some minor scuffs and abrasions on the leather spine, shelfwear on the edges. A few some, light soil spots here and there, but overall, quite clean and bright.

Leipzig Industrie Comptoir 1801 or 1802 Cloth Very Good
Very scarce hand-colored plate book of German costume. 8vo. 78 pp. 25 hand-colored plates (plates are not in order, but all are present). Colas 2667. Lipperheide 654. The costumes are from the Early Renaissance period, or the early 16th century, and all represent court dress. The figures in the plates have an austerity of expression and modeling that is in harmony with works of art from the period(s) depicted, and much of the beauty of the plates flows from this restraint. This copy combines what were two installments and is complete. Contemporary cloth spine, over marbled boards. Light wear to the binding. Text leaves have light foxing, not disconcerting. Plates have occasional light soiling, but overall impression is clean, and all the plates remain attractive.
