With time on our hands during the Coronavirus lockdown, we are reviewing the prices of some of our older stock and adjusting prices of books to ensure that they are the most attractive offering in the marketplace, as it is a reality of the antiquarian market for books that less expensive and mid-level material the trend has been inexorably downward, to the chagrin of booksellers and to the benefit of collectors.  Consequently, we have slashed prices anywhere between 20 percent and 60 percent of these books we have had listed for five years or more.  So we hope that anyone visiting the site might find something that might have become overpriced but now legitimately qualifies as a bargain.

Deutschlands Heer und Flotte in Wort und Bild. Germany's Army and Navy by Pen and Picture. 1899., Sigal, Gustave A.; contributions by Major-General von Specht
142 Sigal, Gustave A.; contributions by Major-General von Specht Deutschlands Heer und Flotte in Wort und Bild. Germany's Army and Navy by Pen and Picture. 1899.
Akron, OH The Werner Company 1900 First Fine No Jacket
Book. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. Text in German and English, with one column on each page devoted to each. Original pictorial cloth. 17.5 by 13.5 inches (44 by 35 cm); [8], 181 pp., with 42 fine, bright chromolithographic plates of military costume, ships, and troops on parade, drilling, on horseback, reconnoitering and scouting, bivouacking, in the field and barracks, engineering -- in short, these are far more than static costume illustrations but rather ones that depict action scenes. Published by Werner, which was a leading German American publisher in the late nineteenth century that began by publishing a German newspaper in the U.S. This, being a bilngual publication, was perhaps the company's most opulent book that clearly was aimed at appealing to Teutonic patriotism of the immigrant community well before the First World War squelched this type of fervor. Similar chromolithography "Wort und Bild" books were also being published in Germany itself, such as ones celebrating the Franco-Prussian War,yet this particular title is artistically superior to much of the genre. It might also be observed that the genre was not unique to German culture. (I.e. Ogden's Uniforms of the Army, depicting American army costume throughout the nineteenth century, published just a few years earlier.) Again, for dynamism and beauty of the image, this title is hard to beat. Some binding wear, and joints repaired at extremities. Interior is tight and extraordinarily clean. Plates are pristine, and even the tissue guards may be described so.

The Work of Stowitts for The Fox God. Lyric Ballet in 3 Acts. Poem by Templeton Crocker. Music by Joseph Redding, Stowitts, Hubert Julian "Jay"
144 Stowitts, Hubert Julian "Jay" The Work of Stowitts for The Fox God. Lyric Ballet in 3 Acts. Poem by Templeton Crocker. Music by Joseph Redding
Hollywood, CA George Palmer Putnam Inc. 1939 Limited Signed Edition Buckram cloth Near Fine
No. 371 of 400 limitation. Printed by Bernard Freres and plates engraved by Deichel-Ploquin in 1928. Folio, 15.5 by 13.5 inches, 40 by 34 cm. 44 pp, followed by 50 color plates with text on versos. With a total of 53 tipped-in, full page color plates, and 6 other tipped-in color illustrations, along with some red and gilt text illustrations or ornamentation. This is an elaborately produced, unique volume containing the classic Chinese Opera "Fay-Yen-Fah", along with the traditional designs, costumes and decor, as illustrated in Stowitts decorations and color plates. Hubert Julian "Jay" Stowitts (1892-1953) was a true polymath -- a gifted athlete, he willed himself to become a dancer after being swept away watching a performance, and within a few years he was discovered by the famed Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova and traveled as a successful dancer throughout the Americas and Europe, becoming the first American to star with a Russian ballet troupe. After a solo career, Stowitts retired from dancing and began a new career as a painter and occasional film actor. He traveled and lived in the Far East and South Asia, where he produced 155 paintings he called "Vanishing India." At the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, his exhibition of fifty-five paintings of nude male American athletes caused a "sensation." The Nazis closed the exhibit down, partly because it showed depictions of Jewish and African-American athletes. Stowitts was fascinated by Eastern religion and philosophy and much of his later work reflects his exploration of these ideas. In this Stowitts can be viewed rightly as a kind of visionary and precursor for ideas that gained wider acceptance in the West in the 1960s and after. The buckram binding, which appears to be a bit later, has washed out color and minor deterioration in the front upper spine area and a few limited spots of washed out discoloration. Otherwise, the binding is tight and the interior is bright and fresh.

145 Strutt, Joseph A Complete View of the Dress and Habits of the People of England from the Establishment of the Saxons in Britain to the Present Time: Illustrated by Engravings Taken from the Most Authentic Remains of Antiquity, To which is Prefixed an Introduction, Containing a General Description of the Ancient Habits in Use Among Mankind, From the Earliest Period of Time to the Conclusion of the Seventh Century. (Two Volumes)
London Henry G. Bohn 1842 Near Fine
Two volumes, 4to. vi, 279 pp. With a total of 153 hand-colored plates, most of them brilliantly so, with the use of gold leaf it would appear in a good many. This is an augmentation of an earlier edition from 1796 by ten plates, and the quality of the coloring further enhances the desirability of this edition. All the plates called for are present, but at least in this copy they are not in order, and in the second volume in particular it might seem that the original compiler had had too much mead as he was inserting the plates. The eccentric ordering, nonetheless, should not greatly diminish one's reveling in the images, and at the end of the second volume there is a list of all the plates and their sources. Inconspicuous embossed library seal stamp affected a few leaves of both volumes. A few tissue guards, text leaves and plate margins (and the backs of a few plates) have light foxing. An insignificant amount of other soiling. The overwhelming majority of plates are clean and fresh. Modern full blue morocco without flaws.

155 Varagnac, Andre, preface; Designed by E. Lepage-Medvey; Translated by Mary Chamot French Costumes [together with eight hand-colored cards of French costume pasted onto the endpapers]
London, Paris, New York The Hyperion Press 1939 First Cloth Very Good very good Jacket
16 pp of text (pp 7 to 23) followed by 40 brightly colored plates (13 by 9 inches, or 31 by 23 cm) on hard card stock showing traditional dress of the various regions of France. Each plate is accompanied with a separate sheet of light paper with a caption. As an extra bonus a prior owner pasted (lightly) eight cards with hand-colored images of women in French peasant dress. These cards are 9 by 13 cm. The print technology used for the plates coming with the book was photo lithography. The text comes with a still useful bibliography of costume books. This copy is disbound but otherwise the plates are all in fine condition. Minor wear, creases and like to some of the caption sheets. DJ with minor corner chips and now protected with mylar. As to the cards, they have some minor soilage (light fingerprint, dust, etc.). One has a small corner chip. Presumably they came in two envelopes which are also pasted to the rear endpaper.

Dictionnaire Raisonne de Mobilier Francais de L'Epoque Carlovingienne a La Renaissance (6 volumes), Viollet-le-Duc, Eugene-Emmanuel
157 Viollet-le-Duc, Eugene-Emmanuel Dictionnaire Raisonne de Mobilier Francais de L'Epoque Carlovingienne a La Renaissance (6 volumes)
Paris A. Morel & Cie. 1872-1875 Very Good
Over 2000 illustrations including wood engravings, steel engravings and chromolithographs of costumes, heraldic emblems, tile designs, utensils, fabrics, musical instruments, armour, weapons etc. One of the major references on the applied arts of the medieval and renaissance eras. Viollet-le-Duc himself was responsible for the restoration of Carcasonne, Reims Cathedral and many other important architectural and historic sites in France. Indeed, Viollet-le-Duc was a seminal figure in the very notion of preserving the architectural remains of the past without which our modern notions of cultural tourism would be inconceivable. From these projects and his copious writings he had an influence on architectural and preservation thought on par with Pugin, WIlliam Morris or John Ruskin, but of these three only Pugin had anything like the practical hands-on experience of Viollet-le-Duc. VLD's approach was the antithesis of especially Ruskin's, though. While Ruskin argued for a purity of vision which scoffed at adaptations and mixing of styles that he believed misrepresented the past, VLD's practice and philosophy was looser and more geared to sprucing up and beautifying, without too much bother with the niceties of the historical accuracy of the result. In other words, he was not reluctant to "improve" upon the past to make something more pleasing to the senses. Notwithstanding the popular appeal of VLD's work, it has suffered some critical opprobrium from the professional establishment which has in recent years embraced Ruskin's views as gospel. Fortunately, the utility of this set doesn't hinge on one's stance on these things, and it surely attests to the incontroverible erudition and breadth of appreciation of VLD. (8vo) 9.5 by 6.5 inches. The overall title is misleading, for furniture is just one part of the treatment, basically handled in the first volume. The second volume deals with all kinds of utensils, ceramic, musical instruments, some armor (jousting gear, etc.). Vol 3 and 4: costume, jewelry, toilette. Vol 5 and 6: armor. (8vo) 9.5 by 6.5 inches. Within the greater sections there are entries and articles arranged alphabetically. Raised bands, spines lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, original wrappers bound in Some scuffing and wear to leather. Light foxing scattered throughout.

Die Mode im Wandel von vier Jahrhunderten, Wagner, Jutta
158 Wagner, Jutta Die Mode im Wandel von vier Jahrhunderten
Berlin Daco Verlag 1948 Box Near Fine
N.d., but circa 1948. Each century is represented with a folding card that houses a leporello containing 16 color fashion plates of costumes from that century. The folder contains brief descriptions of each card. Thus there are four folders and four leporells, with a total of 64 fashion plates. In addition there is an oblong brochure, also in leporello form (with four leaves) which provides a broader overview of the four centuries of fashion history. All this is housed in a box whose overall appearance (without consideration for condition) is of an earlier era. Each fashion plate is 5.5 by 4 inches, or 14 by 10 cm, and these are in fine condition, as are the folders within which they belong. The only condition issue of this very scarce and attractive set is of the box, which has chipping along the edges of the decorative paper that was pasted to the boards, and two edges, one of the lid, the other of the inner box, have been replaced so as to restore the functional integrity of the box. The 9 by 6 by 1 inch box, taken by itself, is thus in fair to good condition.
