The Adventures of Pig Pork & Pork Pig, Berger, Harold. Drawings by Byron MacPherson
141 Berger, Harold. Drawings by Byron MacPherson The Adventures of Pig Pork & Pork Pig
Seattle, Washington Berger Enterprises First Heavy card. Plastic spiral. Fine
N.d., circa 1950. 4to, 27.5 by 23 cm. Unpaginated, thirteen leaves, with printing only on rectos. Story of what happens to piglets who defy their mother when told to stay at home while she went out to the market -- they end up in the mouth of a sly alligator named Big Bad Snipper Snapper. Only by odd circumstances, not to be divulged here, are they saved, as the alligator's sneeze sends them through the air back to their home's front porch. Berger we are told was "better known as Seattle's all weather swimmer" for swimming "Daily with hundred of wild ducks, seagulls and mud hens for company." He was also a recreational director in the Northwest for many years. MacPherson's enchanting illustrations would seem to owe a debt to Looney Tunes. Scarce, with no copies located on OCLC.

148 Bishop, James [writer of verses]; engravings by various eminent artists The Painted Picture Play-Book. Illustrated with upwards of Three Hundred Coloured Pictures, and an Explanatory Verse to Each.
London Dean and Son First edition presumed Paper on boards Fair
N.d., circa 1850s. Folio, 13.5 by 10 inches. Not paginated, 33 leaves, including title page, with printing on only one side per leaf. Wonderful hand-colored illustrations by unnamed artists, but many with the qualiy of Tenniel. Some form part of a loose story narrative, and others are part of a looser verse bond. Particularly appealing are the feline illustrations which come in several places, most notably part of "The Cat Party". The leaves do not appear to have been bound in a proper order, as this particular narrative moves in reverse. It is all somewhat chaotic, yet charmingly so. Also a stand-out is the imagery of the "London Toy Warehouse". While some of the animal imagery is straightforward and pedestrian, this is more than dominated by that which is humorous, unexpected, and inspired. The book was surely intended both to instruct and amuse, and it is this twin objective that underlies its dual tone. The boards, which are covered by illustrated paper pasted on, are soiled and chewed up in the corners, and the edges are rough. There are a fair number of closed tears inside near the front that were less than deftly repaired with tape, some of which remains. Some soilage throughout. Still most of the imagery remains bright and appealing.

Kohana San, Bostwick, Lieutenant F. M. Artist unknown.
151 Bostwick, Lieutenant F. M. Artist unknown. Kohana San
Tokyo; Yokohama T. Hasegawa; Kelly & Walsh, Ltd. 1892 Crepe Paper bound with ribbon Very Good
19 pp. With a song about a geisha written by a naval officer, Ensign, then Lieutenant, F. M. Bostwick, who was in Japan for a three-year tour of duty beginning in 1886. Enthralled by the society around him, Bostwick contributed two musical manuscripts to Hasegawa, the first being Lyuchasan. A bit of departure for Hasegawa, the two works nonetheless sold extremely well for many years after. Sharf 32-3. Minor edge creasing of a few leave corners and slight bunching of the fabric by the front cover joint. Small stamp on p. 1 from presumably first bookseller. The first internal leaf has light foxing and p. 3 has light soiling by the joint. Otherwise bright and clean.

153 Bres, M. Voyage Pittoresque et Romantique sur la Cheminee
Paris Louis Janet 1828 First Edition Hardcover. Cartonnage. Slipcase. Near Fine
A beautiful copy with a cartonnage binding and hand-colored plates. 16mo. 12 by 8 cm. 166 pp. Eight hand-colored plates. A "travel" yarn about the exploration of a salon's mantelpiece, or the objects in a well-appointed room, and the little details missed by most of us as we rush through our domestic lives. This particular copy of this uncommon work epitomizes the exquisite fineness of the genre of almanacs and ladies' gift books produced by Janet, Le Fuel and Macilly during the Restoration era in France. There is trivial rubbing along the edges, with miniscule paper loss, but overall, this is about as nice a copy of this work, and also of the type of binding, one is likely to find.

[Manuscript] In the Back-Yard and the Cellar, Bull, Johan (1893-1945)
158 Bull, Johan (1893-1945) [Manuscript] In the Back-Yard and the Cellar
Hardcover Very Good
Mock-up manuscript for an unpublished children's book manuscript. N.d., circa 1930. Oblong, 25 by 38 cm. 15 pages of illustrated text following the manuscript cover. In addition, there are three matted illustrations of the semi-abstract animal motives found on the front cover. It is unknown with any certainty why this immensely charming, and very professional, manuscript was never published. It is our conjecture that the manuscript was submitted early in the Depression when publishers were cutting back on the children's book list, and especially color illustrated books, both because of the economic straits they were suffering like virtually every industry in the American economy, and more specifically, perhaps, changes in the marketplace for children's books, with some shift of buying from families to public libraries, with a subsequent drop in overall sales as a result. Nonetheless, this manuscript was intended by Bull to be published, as on the back cover there is a label indicated that the manuscript had been submitted by Fred A. Wish, Inc., presumably Bull's literary agent. The book is a small collection of nonsense verses about animals around a house -- cats, dogs, mice, chickens, ducks. Each of the poems runs one to two pages, and is accompanied by one to five illustrations, with the text and illustrations pasted onto the heavy card stock leaves. Condition: card leaves are detached from spine band. A few minor edge chips to cards.

Contes Du Temps Jadis, Bunelleschi, Umberto, illustrator
159 Bunelleschi, Umberto, illustrator Contes Du Temps Jadis
Paris L'Edition D'Art, H. Piazza 1912 1st Limited Edition Hardcover Fine Brunelleschi, Umberto
Book. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Limited signed first edition, this being #247 of 400. 123, [4] pp. Plus 20 tipped-in color plates illustrated by Brunelleschi. (12 by 9 inches, or 30 by 24 cm.) Umberto Brunelleschi was a brilliant Italian painter, book illustrator and fashion designer, probably best known nowadays for his erotica. Here, though, he applies his bold flair with color and his puissant imagination to fairy tales, and resulting is something truly extraordinary! This material would seem his true calling, for here his sensual proclivities are expressed with none of the lurid excess that one might find in some of his other work. And the images are sheer delight which enchant and arrest the eye. The costuming and elegance of the figures depicted are evocative of dance, and the images surely benefit from Brunelleschi's fashion career. And there is still the languid androgyny that spills forth the erotic sensibility. This, and the immersion in atmospherics, make the pictures also squarely belong to the high Art Nouveau fancy, an association reinforced by the foliate borders, which curiously, have a formal lineality not necessarily affiliated with that fin-de-siecle aesthetic movement. What is most conspicuously Art Nouveau, it should be recognized, is the panache of the whole book production represented here. This is truly a book that in and of itself is artwork. Fairy tales contained herein include "La Belle Aux Cheveux D'Or", "L'Oiseau Bleu", "Gracieuse et Percinet", "L'Adroite Princesse" and "Le Prince Cheri". The original wraps are in this copy bound in half vellum which is laid over marbled boards. There is some light spotting in the upper reaches of the vellum and minor soil spots within, but overall this is a tight, clean copy. The tissue guards are all present and the paper is of a nice thick card stock.
