The Simple Life De Gang, Phyllis
142 Phyllis The Simple Life De Gang
Piedmont, California 1904 Cloth Very Good
Oblong, 20 by 27 cm. 14 pp. of ink and watercolor drawings of amusing, preposterous cartoon scenes mostly of family life in a decidedly upper crust, eccentric California family. The artwork resembles the modern cartoonist Roz Chast, whose work regularly appears in The New Yorker. The most striking illustration is a double paged depiction of "Maddie's Birthday Party", which would appear to have been a masquerade party with the guests dressing up as characters mostly from opera and operetta (Tannhauser, The Mikado, Carmen). While the figures in all the drawings have a rough crudity about them, this is also the source of their subversive charm, and the corseted times are upended into something more spontaneous, slapdash and not entirely removed from our more unbuttoned culture. Whether or not the artist was capable of realistic portraiture, she surely knew how to capture movement, and all the drawings convey action and movement very effectively. We may not be privy to the inside jokes at the bottom of the drawings, but it really doesn't matter, as the color, joy and dynamism of the cartoons come together to pull us in. On the cover is written The Century Co., New York, but surely this was the author/artist having a bit of fun, for this is an unpublished manuscript. The title page in facts states a location of Piedmont, which is in the East Bay of San Francisco. The surname of the artist is unknown. Soiling to the cloth cover.

"To Hold as 'Twere", Plunkett, Mrs. Joseph (Grace Vandeleur Plunkett) (1885-1955)
143 Plunkett, Mrs. Joseph (Grace Vandeleur Plunkett) (1885-1955) "To Hold as 'Twere"
Dundalk Tempest Dundagan Press 1920 Wraps Good
4to. 26 by 18.5 cm. Unpaginated, 20 leaves, with 17 being caricature plates, plus title with vignettes. Grace Plunkett, nee Gifford, was a well-known artist and caricaturist who married Joseph Plunkett, martyr of the Easter 1916 Uprising, hours before his execution. This 1920 collection includes a good number of caricatures of the Irish rebels and other notables, including de Valera, Lady Gregory, John MacCormick, Countess Markievicz, etc. The caricatures are sharp and merciless, and Plunkett was a rarity as a woman in the field of caricature at the time. Her sympathies were strongly for Sinn Fein and Irish independence, needless to say. The collection is uncommon in commerce. Heavy soiling of the cover. Moderate wear besides.

London J. Bumpus 1819 Very Good
8vo. xvii, 384 pp. With nine of ten hand colored aquatint plates. Since there is no evidence in the form of offsetting of the missing plate, it may never have been bound into this particular copy. Notwithstanding its omission, the scarcity of this work of English caricature and illustration from Regency England make this a desirable copy. Prideaux 348. Small repair to the top of one plate, a tiny chip on another, and and a few text pages with a repair. Heavy offsetting onto text pages of plates. Otherwise internally quite clean. Attractively bound in three quarter red morocco.

Album of 58 Original Pen-and-Ink and Watercolored Caricatures and Cartoons During World War One, Rabet, M.
145 Rabet, M. Album of 58 Original Pen-and-Ink and Watercolored Caricatures and Cartoons During World War One
1916-1918 Hardcover. Fabric pastedown on cloth. Very Good
Oblong, 13.5 by 20 cm. 33 leaves, drawings only on rectos, with two per page on 25 leaves, and eight full page cartoons. Cartoon captions are in French, and the venom is directed at Kaiser Guillaume (Wilhelm II), the Crown Prince, Bethmann-Hollweg, his generals and admirals such as von Tirpitz, von Bissing, von Zeppelin, Turkey and other Central Powers. The caricatures are masterful miniatures. Rabet captures the essence of his target's facial features with a panache of the accomplished caricaturists, and the illustrations truly stand on their own, even without the captioned short dialogues accompanying the drawings. We don't have information about the artist, M. Rabet, but we can comfortably appraise the artwork as professional level. Light wear.

Eleganza Femminile, Rigone
146 Rigone Eleganza Femminile
1911 Cloth. Leather strap clasp. Ribbon tie binding. Near Fine
Eleven masterfully executed humorous fashion plate caricatures mostly satirizing over-the-top hats. Oblong, 23 by 32.5 cm. The original artwork is done on white sheets which are then mounted onto the black album card, one caricature per leaf, with tissue guards for each album leaf. The artwork is all pen-and-ink and watercolored. With most of the renderings, the oversized hats entirely overwhelms the wearer's face. In all but one, there is a single fashionable, but not necessarily prepossessing, women. In the final caricature the woman, this one very comely and wearing roller skates, is shown warding off suitors, two of whom are floored, a third being chased by a policeman. The artwork here is extraordinary. Whoever Rigone was, he/she was of professional level, and these caricatures together make for a brilliant, delightful suite, full of color and panache. And they work best as a suite -- the whole is greater than the sum of the individual parts.

Framed Original Watercolor Painting of Three Red-Coated Soldiers Loading a Cannon, Rowlandson, Thomas
147 Rowlandson, Thomas Framed Original Watercolor Painting of Three Red-Coated Soldiers Loading a Cannon
NA Fine
18 by 11.5 cm, with frame, 25 by 18 cm. The picture is outlined in pen and ink, with washes of watercolor, as typical of Rowlandson. It depicts three redcoats with tricorn hats loading and/or aiming a cannon by the entrance to a castle. The figures are caricature, and one gets a sense of ineptitude from the soldiers' blase, happy-go-lucky expression, with two of the three nonchalantly looking on more than usefully contributing, but the competence or lack thereof is not really shown clearly. The modest sized illustration, though, is very pleasing, and its little touches of color -- mainly the soldier's uniform -- add immeasurable enchantment to the image. On laid paper. In a very tasteful, traditional and appropriate modern frame.

149 Rowlandson, Thomas Rowlandson's World in Miniature; Consisting of Groups of Figures, for the Illustration of Landscape Scenery. Drawn and Etched.
London R. Ackermann 1816 First Full Morocco Near Fine
A rare hand-colored copy of one of Rowlandson's most delightful of works. 4to. 25 by 17 cm. 40 hand-colored etched plates. Front cover of original wrapper bound in at front. Highly attractive renderings of Regency life, high and low, town and country, with the element of caricature somewhat softened, in tandem with the soft hand-coloring. The atmosphere is gauzy, and it invites a longing and nostalgia, not a revulsion or contempt. The one consistent strain in the depictions is that they are outdoors, whether in a park, a woods, by the shore, on a town's High Street, a tavern, etc. Tooley 437. Full morocco binding by Riviere & Son.

Portfolio of Thirteen Original Pen and Ink Political Cartoons by F. L. Sole(?) from the 1920s and 1930s, Sole, F. L. (?)
157 Sole, F. L. (?) Portfolio of Thirteen Original Pen and Ink Political Cartoons by F. L. Sole(?) from the 1920s and 1930s
1927, 1928, 1931
The cartoons range from the topical, depicting Jack Dempsey, the heavyweight champion, and the political divide over Prohibition, to a-political lighthearted aspects of everyday life in the sticks. In the latter category are such subjects as a farmer feeding his pig(s) at dawn, a stern man smoking a pipe, a dumpy-looking professor explaining geometry to a gangly puzzled hick. A few of the cartoons are really just caricature character studies -- these have great charm. In one, a man, representing the Ironwear Hosery [sic] Co., is knitting socks and fretting about getting work done before the trout season opens. The sensibility might strike one as in accord with Norman Rockwell, although the style is not the same. The cartoons were clearly done by a professional cartoonist for publication, but we have been unable to discover who "Sole" was, or where the cartoons may have appeared. He sometimes signs with initials, but these are stylized and so we can not be sure that these initials are meant to be F and L, or in what order these initials are supposed to be, if indeed they are the correct letters. Nonetheless, they do capture the age, are are pleasing regardless of biography of their creator or the outlet where they appeared. Some of the references would be obscure to all but the most specialized of historians, but their general gist tends to be easily apparent, and their winsome levity suffers little. An example is one entitled a "Modern Daniel", and it depicts a scene between two lions, one dubbed "Wets", the other, "Drys", a clear reference to Prohibition, and a small cowering man in the foreground is holding out a branch with a banner carrying the words, "Wickersham Report" on it. What this report is may be long forgottent, but given the 1931 dating of the cartoon, we can have no doubt that the cartoonist is showing two fierce and implacable lions facing off one another, with the "Wets" getting an upper hand, as was the case by the thirties. The cartoons range in size, from 20 by 13 cm to 38 by 31 cm, with most closer to the largest one in their size. A few short closed tears and chips -- these are minor.

Karikatury 1935, T. Kos-Zahajsky
160 T. Kos-Zahajsky Karikatury 1935
Prague Unknown 1935 Cloth Near fine
Very scarce collection of Czech caricature -- no copies located on OCLC First Search. Oblong 8vo. 21 by 27 cm. Title, followed by 33 plates, three of which are folding. The illustrations are caricatures mostly of Czech politicians, artists, writers, and other public figures, but there are also a good number relating to world figures, including Hitler, Pilsudski, Stalin, Litvinov, Mussolini, Anthony Eden, Ramsay MacDonald, etc. The style of caricature is quite singular -- comparable in this might be cited Max Beerbohm -- and as always one test of quality, one doesn't necessarily have to be familiar with the subject depicted to derive amusement from the image. Inscribed on title page by the artist. A clean copy.
