164 C.E.B. [C. E. Bowen]. Uncredited are William Wordsworth and Jane Taylor Favorite Colored Picture Book
New York McLoughlin Bros. 1876 First Edition presumed Decorated Cloth Very Good
N.d., circa 1876. (Bearing an inscription from this date plus a single copy on OCLC dated as such.) [35] pages, paginated by sections, and with sixteen full pages of colored plates, some with two illustrations, other with one. Wordsworth wrote "Lucy Gray" contained herein. "Little Ann and her mamma", by Ann and Jane Taylor, is adapted from London to New York. Other poems included are "Hector the Dog", "Frisky the Squirrel", "The Kittens' Mishap", "The Robins' Christmas Eve", "The Wolf and the Seven Kids" and "Three Little Dogs", and these titles give a good hint of the content. Appropriately the inscription shows this was a Chirstmas gift. The illustrations capture our notions of High Victorian style and children's lives. This copy is mostly clean and attractive, notwithstanding wear in the corners and the spine extremities.

176 Chase, Janet Ralston Mother Goose in a New Dress (Mother Goose's Melodies)
Philadelphia Porter and Coates 1870 1st Edition Hardcover Fine No Jacket Chase, Janet Ralston
Book. 4to - over 9 - 12" tall. N.d., circa 1870. Illustrated by Janet (Janette) Ralston Chase, daughter of Salmon P. Chase who was Secretary of the Treasury in the Lincoln administration, later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and a leading abolitionist within government before the Civil War. Janette (1847 - 1925) was Salmon Chase's fifth daughter and one of the two to survive to adulthood. Growing up in the shadow of her elder sister Kate Chase Sprague, Janet became a children's book author and illustrator. This book was presented as a gift to her father on his 62nd birthday in 1870 when he was Chief Justice, as is noted in the publisher's preface, which also notes that this is a facsimile of that handmade version. This copy has 16 stiff leaves with text and chromolithographs only on the recto sides. Each leaf protected with tissue. Binding is modern quarter red calf over thick black boards, with modern endpapers. Preface leaf (not counted among 16) has tape repair of thick paper cracked neatly where attached to tab. Otherwise leaves clean. Some minor chips to some of the tissue, with one having a dime-sized edge loss. Overall, a fine and attractive copy.
