161 Thackeray, William Makepeace, as the artist Etchings by the late William Makepeace Thackeray while at Cambridge Illustrative of University Life, etc., etc. Now First Published from the Original Plates
London Henry Sotheran & Co. 1878 First Full Calf Very Good
8vo. 22 by 14 cm. Title leaf, table of contents, then eleven etchings, each given in two states, one hand-colored, the other, without color, and in each of these etchings is presented on eight leaves, for a total of sixteen plates. Following the plates are many blank leaves which allowed for the binding to have some thickness and a title label on the spine. Thackeray was an accomplished caricaturist, but we should be glad that a Cruikshank he was not, and that in time he chose to concentrate on the written word for his sustenance. Bound in full calf by Bradstreet's. Bookplate with section and shelf lines, but we believe this is for a private library. No other signs that can be interpreted as ex-lib. Spine leather darkened. Chips to spine labels. Tight and clean within.

162 Thoeny, E. Militaer Album
Munchen Verlag Albert Langen First Edition Decorated Cloth Very Good
N.d., circa 1900. Folio-sized, measuring 40 by 30 cm, 16 by 11.75 inches. With 32 large color plates, all using one or two colors besides black and white. The captions poke light fun at the Prussian, and German, military and militarism, as well as the common attitudes of the ranks and file at the time. Much of the humor is now somewhat obscure, which is part of its academic fascination. The drawings, regardless, capture the time and spirit of the German army and navy of the period when it was at the height of its prestige. The cover has light soiling and wear. The original endpapers have edge chips and a closed tear along the front hinge. The contents are quite clean.

163 Tim Bobbins [John Collier] The Miscellaneous Works of Tim Bobbin, Esq. containing his Views of the Lancashire Dialect, With large Additions and Improvements; also, His Poems of the Flying Dragon, and the Man of Heaton; Together with other Whimsical Amusements in Prose and Verse. To which is added, A Life of the Author
Salford Cowdroy & Slack 1812 Half Calf Very Good
8vo. 240, 88 pp. With frontis portrait and 27 copper engraved plates, which are generally whimsical, boisterous, or funny. The plates capture the tone of much of the text, which is given over to light verse and broad burlessque, dialect humor. Of greatest value, though, is surely the glossary of Lancashire words and phrases, combined with how this picturesque form of speech is worked into the skits and dialogues. Tim Bobbins was a pseudonym for John Collier (1708-1786), the Lancashire Hogarth. His publication on the Lancashire dialect was indeed the first important work to treat the subject. Heavy age toning. Some soiling besides. Offsetting to plates. Spine calf a bit dry. Binding remains tight, and copy is overall still attractive, even with faults.

165 Vernier, Charles. Lithographer: Destouches. La Rigolbochomanie Croquis Lithographiques & Chorégraphiques
Paris Au Bureau du Charivari Hardcover. Very Good
N.d., circa 1850. Folio. 33.5 by 25.5 cm. Hand-colored lithographed title page followed by 30 numbered lithographed hand-colored plates. A send-up of the can-can craze that had swept Paris at the time. Illustrations accompanied by humorous captions, which generally aren't necessary for an appreciation of the illustration and its point. Note that not all copies of this work have hand-coloring. This copy is richly hand-colored, in our view. Condition: later binding, with cloth spine and marbled paper pastedown on boards. Scattered, mostly light, foxing. A few short marginal closed tears.

Thurnau 13.Lehrgang/4.-11.April 37, Vierster, Werner
166 Vierster, Werner Thurnau 13.Lehrgang/4.-11.April 37
1937 Custom-made half leather folder Fine
A most unusual, bizarre, comical home-made book of a Nazi training camp for the SA! 20 pp., plus wraps. 29 by 25 cm. If one could overlook the sinister associations, much of the satire could apply to any military boot camp, but of course one can not escape the invidious context. In a way, this might be viewed as a pity, because the illustrations and accompanying light verse are superb, and this can be seen as plausibly publishable, but for the irredeemably unsavory context. Yet it is on the other hand a most interesting primary source document on the life of an ordinary member of the SA and by extension, other Nazi units. So we find mocked the task master commander, the morning wake-up and ablutions, the constant drilling, exercise and sporting regimen. Quite graphically depicted is the group shower, among other things. Interestingly, women were a part of the camp experience -- they lived separately, but there was mingling. Much of the training would appear to have been indistinguishable from standard military training. Was this in keeping with the paramilitary nature of the SA, or was it somehow related also to the German not so furtive strategems to evade the restrictions placed on its military activities by the Treaty of Versailles? In any case, there is strangely no allusion to Jews in the entire work. The most disturbing aspect of the work may be that, notwithstanding the gently cynical tone, the author would appear to have emerged from the program an enthusiastic member of the SA! Now housed in a handsome half-black morocco over green cloth folder.

Scenes and Characters of the English XVIIIth Century, all, with the exception of one or two Portraits, Original, Vulliamy, C. E.
167 Vulliamy, C. E. Scenes and Characters of the English XVIIIth Century, all, with the exception of one or two Portraits, Original
1906 Quarter Leather Very Good Plus
A complete manuscript book containing 34 pen and sepia wash pictures, each captioned on the facing leaf by the hand of Colwyn Edward Vulliamy (1886 - 1971). Vulliamy was a Welsh biographer and historian. Educated privately, he studied art under Stanhope Forbes. In World War One he served in France, Macedonia and Turkey. Post-war, in addition to biography, he produced several mysteries and dabbled in humor writing. This album beautifully combines his affinity for history and humor, and one could only wish he had devoted more of his later energies to such caricature. The subject matter is of some historic remove from Vulliamy, but surely the album reflects the surge of interest in the eighteenth century that occurred at the turn of the twentieth century. Here one will find both a wistful and jaundiced look back -- Vulliamy doesn't look away from the seedy and ugly aspects of Georgian England. His style and wash media are true to the period, and but for the paper stock and the binding, one could be easily deceived into thinking the artwork was in fact contemporary with the period depicted. The front endpaper is signed and dated by the author, and he again initials and dates the closing illustrated leaf. Quarter leather over pebbled cloth binding, measuring 9.5 by 13.5 cm, or 5.25 by 3.75 inches. Some spotting on the black cloth. Otherwise, quite fresh and clean.

Dessins Originaux de Paul Wagnez, Wagniez [Wagnez], Paul
168 Wagniez [Wagnez], Paul Dessins Originaux de Paul Wagnez
Cloth Very Good
Small folio, 33 by 25 cm. 38 pp. of pen and crayon drawings, most of which are both erotic and comical, mounted in "Henschel's Skizzenbuch". The accompanying text, often narrative poems, is written by Wagniez as well. The French-Belgian artist Paul Wagniez (1876 - 1935) studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts et des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and became known for book illustration. He was a versatile artist, nonetheless, at home with still lifes, landscapes, portraits, and action scenes such as those of the hunt, and equally proficient in oils, watercolors and other media. Most of the works contained in the album are from the early 1930s, shortly before Wagniez's death, and these were dedicated to a friend, Robert Villefumade, who most surely compiled this album in honor of Wagniez. The overall nature of the content is not readily apparent as one opens the front cover. On that cover there is a funny picture of a squat obese woman surrounded ludicrously with mathematic iconology. Humor aside, this offers no hint of the risqué. Pasted to the FFEP is a moody youthful self-portrait, circa 1900. Following are two additional somber works -- another, more mature Wagniez self-portrait executed in 1928, and a pretty yard scene of a cat, dated 1934. Then the fun begins. The erotica bears some resemblance to Epinal cartoon sheets in the arrangement of vignettes on the page amidst text, in their artistic styling, and in being, essentially, graphic short stories, except unlike Epinals, the content is not meant for juvenile eyes. In one tale, "Chut, chut! Tu vas reveiller Grand-mere . . . " a young woman exhorts her lover to be quiet lest they wake the sleeping elderly woman. Another piece involves a lecherous traveller unexpectedly rebuffed in his advances. Other story lines show a wet nurse who doesn't feel compelled to nap with her ward, the uninhibited dreams of young women, and a Flapper named Fanny who "se chauffe en hiver/A la flamme elle expose son derriere . . . " This being the land of saucy louche-ness, one can find tingly hints of sapphic love and other taboos defied. Not all the action is harmlessly consensual by any means -- there is a fair amount of violation and rape. The stories are set in the past, with particular relish for the period spanning from Henri IV to Louis XIII, but scenes also set in mythology, the Middle Ages and the eighteenth century. A few of the final entries are sketchy, unfinished cartoons, but overall, the work is meticulously detailed and rendered with great fluency. Moderate to heavy wear to the cloth binding, with tears along joints, bunching of the cloth, soiling, etc.

Washington DC The Gridiron Press December 9, 1911 First edition Wraps Very Good
Inscribed by C.K. Berryman, the cartoonist, to H.W. Berryman. The inscription states, "This book is inscribed by the illustrator C.K. Berryman". 8vo. 20 by 16.5 cm. 74, [1] pp. Cartoons are of the political luminaries of the day, including many names still recognizable, such as Elihu Root, William Borah, Taft, TR, Robert LaFolette, , Gifford Pinchot, Henry Stimson, Woodrow Wilson, and on and on. Clever rhymes for the ABC and then clever variants of well-known nursery rhymes. The drawings capture the persons depicted with great fidelity yet impressive economy. Berryman began his career as an artist for the patent office before joining the staff of "The Washington Post" in 1891 as an understudy for its chief cartoonist, then becoming its official cartoonist in 1896. In 1907 he left the Post for "The Washington Star" where he drew cartoons until his death. He is probably best known for inspiring the Teddy Bear. The Gridiron Club was founded in 1885 and remains one of the most prestigious press clubs in the nation. The Gridiron Dinner is an annual rite in Washington, often attended by the sitting President. This book is uncommon in the original printing.

179 [Collier, Jane]. Illustrations by George Moutard Woodward. Thomas Rowlandson, engraver An Essay on the Art of Ingeniously Tormenting. A New Edition, Corrected, Revised, and Illustrated with Five Prints, From Designs by G. M. Woodward
London Thomas Tegg 1809 Full Calf, Cloth slipcase Very Good Minus
12mo. 16 by 10 cm. [4],160 pp. Five hand-colored plates, the frontis plate being a fold-out. This tongue-in-cheek primer on caddishness was at the time of this edition a popular parody of the eighteenth century manuals on manners and their versions of self-improvement tracts. The text still is a funny read, and might be particularly savored as one dips into other Georgian, or Regency, comedy of manners (Sheridan, Goldsmith, Austen, etc.). Readers of the day must have laughed aloud when they recognized in the various ironic tips the bad behavior of others, and perhaps uncomfortably, in themselves. On another level, this is a work that is all about power and the abuse of power, and thus its relevance has not really receded. Woodward, being a caricaturist well-schooled in the crudities of society, is a fitting illustrator of some of the finer points of tormenting laid out in the treatise, and his illustrations more than anything else, by capturing the spirit of the work, transport us back to the time and place depicted supremely well. Condition: rebacked, with most of original spine pasted on, but missing top compartment and many chips of the original spine. Pages are heavily age toned, and some tiny closed tearing and/or edge chipping to prelims and rear blanks, and small chip to folding frontis.
