A Travers Paris, Crafty [Victor Eugène Géruzez] (1840-1906)
181 Crafty [Victor Eugène Géruzez] (1840-1906) A Travers Paris
Paris Librairie Plon First Edition Decorated Cloth Very Good Plus
N.d., 1887. Oblong, 23 by 27 cm. 48 pp. A tour of the streets of Paris and the various contretemps encountered, most involving in some way horses, whether working or sporting horses. Thus we encounter the collision of horses with modern technology, from bicycles to electrified trams. The humor is somewhat dry and ironic. While one here can enjoy a glimpse of the pre-automobile city, there is enough that is recognization in the various accidents, activities, pretensions, and confusion that one might nod in recognition of many of Crafty's remarks. Binding is near mint in terms of the brightness of the cloth and imagery. Light foxing in early leaves, then only occasionally. Most leaves are clean. Tiny pinprick hole on FFEP where there is the remnants of a seller's small price tag.

Simple Simon and His Friends, Crombie, Charles, illustrator (1880-1967)
184 Crombie, Charles, illustrator (1880-1967) Simple Simon and His Friends
London Greening & Co., Ltd. Arranged and printed by Bemrose & Sons Limited Near Fine
With very scarce original dust jacket! Oblong 4to. 29 by 45 cm. Unpaginated, 27 pages -- after title page, two or four pages per nursery rhyme, one with the verse, the facing page, with the peerless Crombie color illustration, and two pages of promotion for Brown & Polson's flour. The nursery rhymes are among the most familiar: Simple Simon, of course, The Queen of Hearts, Little Jack Horner, Little Tom Tucker, Pat-a-Cake, Georgie Porgie, King Pippin's Hall, Girls and Boys Come Out to Play, and Hot-Cross Buns. The Crombie illustrations are within the aesthetic movement tradition, or Queen Anne-style, as also associated with Walter Crane or more loosely, William Morris or the contemporary of Crombie, Maxfield Parrish. They generally have a Medievalist feel to them, as is very appropriate with an ancient tradition stretching back to a vague mythical past of kings, queens, knights and pages as so many nursery rhymes do, although a few of the illustrations evoke the more recent Georgian or Regency past. The book is unusual inasmuch as it appears to have been issued by a food processing company as a promotion of sorts -- we do not think the ad in the back is an incidental insert. As evidence of this is that Brown & Polson held the copyright to the illustrations -- they all have fine lettered captions underneath to this effect. While we have come across this book from time to time, we have never seen the dust jacket before! Ours is also overall a beautiful copy, exception some soiling on the cloth spine, mostly from the rusting of the staples used in binding the text block seeping through, and two tiny pinprick holes on the rear of this cloth strip. The title page has light foxing; otherwise, we would say pristine. The dust jacket is dampstained and chipped but nonetheless essentially intact. Crombie was a commercial and editorial artist, best known today for his illustrations for "The Rules of Golf" and its sequel, "The Rules of Cricket".

Wraps Fine Very Good Jacket
Scarce item, with no copies located on OCLC, nor anything discoverable about the author of the verse. N.d., circa 1890. 8vo. 19 by 16 cm. 16 pp., plus wraps. No information on the publisher. Very charming chromolithographs of small children foxhunting. in naval garb, in eighteenth century frippery. The conceit of the book is small children engaging in essentially adult activities and/or emotions. Thus, strictly-speaking, the book was probably more intended for an adult audience. There are seven chromolithographic plates. The leaves are of a card stock and sturdy. Most unusual is that the dust jacket has survived and is in a well-preserved state.

194 Delalain, H. [Henriette], author and illustrator A Tire D'Aile
Paris Ch. Ramel & Cie. First Edition Presumed Wraps Very Good Minus
N.d., circa 1920s. Oblong, 22 by 29.5 cm. Unpaginated, 14 leaves (and wraps), with text and illustrations only on rectos. Eight color plates, plus cover color illustration. Publisher's ad on last leaf. The printing process is probably pochoir. A few of the plates could pass for having been painted by hand. The style is a touch naive, yet entirely vivid, and Delalain's artwork is entirely unique -- one can not name any obvious specific precursor. Scarce, with only two copies located on OCLC FirstServe (BNF and Smithsonian). Light foxing on the cover and occasionally within. Moderate wear besides.

Le Buffon des Petits Enfants Premieres Connaissances, Aussi Amusantes que Curieuses Pour Apprendre l'Histoire Naturelle, Delattre, Charles
195 Delattre, Charles Le Buffon des Petits Enfants Premieres Connaissances, Aussi Amusantes que Curieuses Pour Apprendre l'Histoire Naturelle
Paris Bibliotheque d'Education de Desiree Eymery 1841 First Edition Presumed Good
Scarce, with no copies of this edition on OCLC FirstSearch, and the earliest copy on OCLC being four years later, with fewer plates and the plates apparently not hand-colored. 12mo. 14 by 9 cm. 169 pp. 12 hand-colored plates, including frontis genre scene at the Jardins des Plants. Text is presented in a dialogue format between a father and son. Besides the scarcity of this juvenile zoological plate book, it is unusual to find a color printed pastedown on the cover of a book of this vintage. Moderately to heavily soiled cover, with the pastedown imagery heavily rubbed -- the imagery is still generally discernible, but it is a show of what it was. A few small closed marginal tears of the pages, and a moderate amouht of foxing to a few early and last leaves.
