21 de Rupé, G., architect and artist. Heliographs by B. Rôze & Cie. H. Fléchelle Album de Bois Découpés 1875 2e Partie. Kiosques.
Paris Imprimerie Jules Boyer 1875 Hardcover. Paper pastedown. Cloth spine Very Good Plus
Scarce album of designs for kiosks, chalets and small villas -- lovely pleasure pavilions and follies, many can be. No copies whatsoever found on OCLC or elsewhere. Folio, 35 by 27 cm. Secondary title page (front cover serves as the primary title page), followed by 30 plates, each with a single design. Each plate is dominated by an elevation of the design, below which is a ruled scale and a simple architectural design outline -- as most of these are single room, this amounts to a geometric shape and little more in those instances. Quite extraordinary architectural "trade catalogue" -- besides being scarce in itself, it is a type of catalogue that was also uncommon at the date of its issue. Light wear.

British Castles; or, A Compendious History of the Ancient Military Structures of Great Britain. Illustrated by Numerous Views of Some of the Most Interesting Castles in Great Britain., Fielding, T.H.
22 Fielding, T.H. British Castles; or, A Compendious History of the Ancient Military Structures of Great Britain. Illustrated by Numerous Views of Some of the Most Interesting Castles in Great Britain.
London Howlett and Brimmer 1825 First Edition Half Morocco. Very Good
Oblong 4to, 21 by 27 cm. vi, 72, [1] pp. 25 hand-colored aquatint plates, including frontis, of ultra-Romantic castles, many of which were by then ruins, all of which were set in bucolic surroundings, whether by the windswept sea, a hillock, a meadow, etc. The work bespeaks the new-found fascination with the British architectural past and the incipient historicism, as perhaps captured well in the frontis comparison of arches from different periods. Contemporary half red-morocco, with title label on front board. Light to moderate foxing on text leaves and tissue guards. Plates are clean. Overall, a bright, lovely copy of a comparatively uncommon color plate book of that era.

24 Isaac D. Smead Ventilation and Warming of Buildings, Upon the Principles as Designed and Patented by Isaac D. Smead, Now owned and controlled (under 13 patents)
Toledo, OH Isaac D. Smead & Co. Printed by Henry O. Shepard & Co., Chicago 1889 First Edition Cloth Very Good
Inscribed by Snead under his frontis portrait (possibly holographic) and FFEP. 4to. 154 pp. With fourteen pages of chromolithographs, some full page plates, and many other illustrations of schools, heating systems and the like. The primary thrust of this promotional book is the application of the heating system to schools, but even those not particularly fascinated by the topic will find the illustrations pleasing, and as a sales-oriented book this one stands out as especially elaborate for its day. The work also addresses other piquant topics such as "The Dry Closet System of Disposing of Excrement," "The Physiology of Respiration", etc. Much of the text is presented as a dialogue, making this work a precursor of sorts for the modern day infomercial. Referred to in Romaine,Guide to American Trade Catalogs, p. 263. A few shallow blisters of cloth, and some other light, inconspicuous soiling of boards. Generally clean and tight.

36 Smillie, James, engraver. Texts by N. Cleaveland and Cornelia W. Walter, respectively Rural Cemeteries of America. Green-Wood Illustrated in a Series of Views Taken Expressly for This Work [together with] Mount Auburn Illustrated in a Series of Views from Drawings by James Smillie. (Two volumes in one)
New York R. Martin 1847 and 1850 First and later edition respectively Half Morocco Very Good
4to. viii, 94, [1], 119, [1] pp. 38 steel engraved plates in all, including frontis maps of cemeteries in their respective volumes. Plus two penciled notes written by the famous engraver, Smillie, presumably. These are written on the backs of two plates, one the frontis map plate of the second part. Cemeteries have long been green oases in densely populated urban areas, and in the nineteenth century a tradition of opulence developed in which the wealthy spared no expense in building mosoleums and memorials to themselves. Thus at least in the more celebrated cemeteries can be found a bucolic beauty enveloping much architectural splendor, and this series captured these attributes for an appreciative audience. Greenwood is a vast expanse in Brooklyn, and Mount Auburn is its equivalent in the Boston area. Smillie (1807 - 1885) was an engraver born in Edinburgh who immigrated to the U.S. as an adult after spending time in Quebec. He is best known today as an engraver who worked with such Hudson River School artists as Thomas Cole and Albert Bierstadt. His bread and butter work, though, was engraving bank notes. Spine morocco with a few chips now mostly concealed with goup or paint. Front marbled endpapers torn by the hinge. Occasional very light soiling but generally clean. Binding is tight.

Town of Massena, New York. Built in 1907 by The Aluminum Company of America. Albert H. Spahr, Architect, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Spahr, Albert H., Architect
37 Spahr, Albert H., Architect Town of Massena, New York. Built in 1907 by The Aluminum Company of America. Albert H. Spahr, Architect, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Pebbled cloth. Metal clasps. Very Good
Folio of photos showing planned company town for workers of what became known as Alcoa, in Upstate New York. 39 leaves of photos and a few drawings of plans. Contained in a binder 33.5 by 26.5 cm. Photos or pages all backed with linen. Designs combine cottage and Tudor styles, with heavy use of brickwork, half timber detailing, especially in the gables and sometimes the second or upper floors. Many of the buildings are basically precursors of multi-family garden apartments, although these buildings, from a distance at least, could pass as single family manor houses, and there is also a great affinity to English developments of the same period, and perhaps later. The planned community was surely designed with some of the ideals of the garden city movement then in its early years, and one can see Alcoa acting out of a paternalistic impulse to foster a more humane living environment for its plant employees.

38 Stern, Robert A. M., Gregory Gilmartin, Thomas Mellins New York 1930 Architecture and Urbanism Between the Two World Wars
New York Rizzoli 1987 First Edition Cloth Fine Fine Jacket
Wonderful survey of all aspects of New York buildings and structures from the era, when the city was at its most romantic and in many respects, its apogee. This was the time that something resembling the contemporary city was taking shape. Still, some of the beautiful or important structures from this time survive no more, destroyed in the name of "progress". The most minor of wear.

39 Tavenor-Perry, J. [John] (1842-1915) Original Illustrations, or proofs, used in published book, "Dinanderie: A History and Description of Mediaeval Art Work in Copper Brass and Bronze" [together with] a copy of the published book With One Hundred and Twenty Illustrations
London George Allen & Sons. Printed by Ballantyne, Hanson & Co., Edinburgh 1910 First Hardcover Good
With 133 pages of drawings in pen-and-ink by Tavenor-Perry, assembled into 20 albums. Drawings are of castles, churches and cathedrals, Medieval ruins, the architectural elements and details of these structures, among them doors, windows, gargoyles, hardware, gates, coats of armor, tombs, monuments, fonts, church paraphernalia such as monstrances, crosses, lecterns, reliquaries, candlesticks, holy water vats, sculpture, pewterware, glassware, etc. etc. The survey covers all of these throughout Europe, with an emphasis surely on Northern Europe, including Britain, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, The albums are all 4to in size, or 27 by 18.5 cm, and their appearance is strictly utilitarian -- the bindings are of plain board, with paper bands as spines. Drawings are done generally on thick board. The book the drawings went into is also 4to, 26 by 21 cm. xii, 238 pp. Often there are two or more drawings on the page, and when these were used in the published work, they were numbered individually. There are many drawings that were not used in the printed book, which contains a total of 71 illustrated vignettes. We believe that some of the drawings might have gone into another book or article, as there are two additional title pages: "Damme: An Ancient Town in the Low Countries", and "Dragons and Monsters beneath Baptismal Fonts". One of the virtues of the orginal drawing proofs is that they are almost always larger than their printed version, with the pay-off of greater clarity to detail. Independent of these drawings use at the time, the albums are generally organized around themes, and so in a compact format they can serve as a visual survey of particular types of Medieval decorative art objects. The drawings are whole buildings, sometimes with small human figures to provide a sense of scale and cobbled streets, are especially pretty. Condition: a good number of the boards are loose. Some spines are perished. The albums' exteriors generally are somewhat worn,

Histoire D'Une Maison, Viollet-le-Duc, Texte et Dessins par
40 Viollet-le-Duc, Texte et Dessins par Histoire D'Une Maison
Paris Bibliotheque D'Education et de Recreation, J. Hetzel et Cie. Decorated Cloth Very Good
N.d., circa 1870s. 8vo, 260 pp. The gifted, energetic and controversial Viollet-le-Duc had a profound effect on architectural thought. Responsible for the restoration of Reims Cathedral and the ambitious, successful restoration and appreciation of the Medieval walled city of Carcassone, Voillet-le-Duc was more concerned with capturing the beauty and overarching finest qualities of the past rather than the fine details that were strictly-speaking historically accurate. In this he was at loggerheads with the more literal purist, the art critic John Ruskin, whose views have in recent times been more in favor despite his not having been a trained architect. In any case, this book is one of the best surveys of the anatomy of house and is especially good in describing the various trades which contribute to the building of a house. Organized as a novelistic dialogue, the treatment also superbly avoids the trap of a dry exegesis that usually afflicts even popular surveys. Clean and tight within. Light sunning to the spine. Minor repair of the upper spine tip was made.
