With time on our hands during the Coronavirus lockdown, we are reviewing the prices of some of our older stock and adjusting prices of books to ensure that they are the most attractive offering in the marketplace, as it is a reality of the antiquarian market for books that less expensive and mid-level material the trend has been inexorably downward, to the chagrin of booksellers and to the benefit of collectors.  Consequently, we have slashed prices anywhere between 20 percent and 60 percent of these books we have had listed for five years or more.  So we hope that anyone visiting the site might find something that might have become overpriced but now legitimately qualifies as a bargain.

Danseuses de l'Opera Costumes des Principaux Ballets Dessines par Alophe, Alophe, Marie-Alexandre [also known as Alexandre Menut Alophe] (1812-1883)
201 Alophe, Marie-Alexandre [also known as Alexandre Menut Alophe] (1812-1883) Danseuses de l'Opera Costumes des Principaux Ballets Dessines par Alophe
Paris Au Bureau du Journal Les Modes Parisiennes. Printed by Imprimerie Auguste Bry. Typography: Henri Plon First Edition Wraps, with Custom-Made Folder Very Good
N.d., circa 1850. Colas 103 gives an earlier date, 1838, but this is improbable based on some of the dancers and roles depicted. Fourteen hand-colored plates of the leading ballerinas of the day, all in performance: Taglioni, in La sylphide (a role she created in 1832); Rosati, in Corsaire; Ferraris, in des Elfes; Zaina Richard, in Marco Spada; Marquet, in Marco Spada; Marquet, in le ballet du Dieu et la bayadère; Fiocre, in L'amour de Pierre de Medicis; Cassegrain, in Marco Spada; Emarot, in Guillaume Tell; Emma Livry, in Herculanum; Caroline, in Marco Spada; Plunkett, in La mañola de La favorite; Vibon, in le ballet Vert-Vert; and Lefevre, in Orfa. Aided by the restrained use of color, which bears a similarity to how photographs would be hand colored, the illustrations have a near-photographic quality, and they thereby convey to us the physical aesthetic that prevailed in the mid-nineteenth century on the dance stage. Measuring 34 by 25 cm. The green wraps have a paper infill where there was edge chipping and tearing. Spine paper now gone. After heavy soiling on the first tissue guard, though, the plates are all clean and bright, and other than tiny corner creases, without issue. A handsome tan cloth custom-made box now houses the book.

Scarce, with no copies of this shape book version of "Sambo" located on OCLC FirstSearch. N.d., circa 1950. 26 by 16 cm, at tallest and widest. Unpaginated, 12 pp., plus wraps. Each page one half to two thirds filled with colorful illustrations that are quite distinct from the original better known illustrations, and in our view, are less caricature-ish, with Sambo also a somewhat more mature boy. Other than a tiny pinprick-sized, inconspicuous hole on center of front cover, pristine.

214 Arnoux, Guy (1886 - 1951) Jeux et Divertissements. 10 Images en Couleurs
Paris Chez Devambez Editions d'Art First edition Wraps Very Good
Scarce, yet slightly incomplete, spectacular set of pochoir plates. The only other copy of this set of plates found at Pennsylvania State (by an OCLC search) and apparently not in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France (by check of its own catalogue). N.d., circa 1920. Oblong, 29 by 36.5 cm. Only eight of ten pochoir plates, plus decorated title. The plates depict card playing, bird shooting, fishing, dice, dancing, skating, archery and blind man's bluff, with all the elegant men and women of the eighteenth century Ancien Regime. The colors have a rich lushness characteristic of the best pochoir, and the figures are pared down and stylized yet also easily representational as in many of Arnoux's other book illusrations. Ex-lib light -- a small, neat inked number in a corner of the backs of the plates, not the least disconcerting, and no hint of ex-lib on the cover or the plate fronts. Light soiling to the cover. A few small tape repairs in the margins not coming close to the imagery.

Histoire de L'Art Decoratif de XVI Siecle a Nos Jours, Arsene Alexandre
215 Arsene Alexandre Histoire de L'Art Decoratif de XVI Siecle a Nos Jours
Paris Henri Laurens 1892 Half Morocco, with slipcase Fine
Heavy folio-sized, 40 by 32 cm, 15.5 by 12 inches. 15 lbs., with slipcase. vii, 336 pp, with 60 plates, 48 of which are color chromolithographs, and several of these are two paged. A magnificent survey of the decorative arts, touching on furniture, glass, porcelain, faience and ceramics, enamel, metalwork, fabric, etc. A truly magnificent and majesterial work, and this is a copy that is fully commensurate, with its half purple morocco over marbled boards, which are themselves unusually thick and substantial. Perhaps the one minor defect is that the spine leather has been sunned to a brown, but the difference in color with that on the boards is unlikely to disconcert. Gilt edges all around, and immaculate within. With slipcase of cloth and morocco trim.

216 Atkinson, J. A. [John Augustus Atkinson], illustrator and engraver Sixteen Scenes taken from The Miseries of Human Life By one of THE Wretched. [On cover label: "Engravings to Illustrate the Miseries of Human Life."]
London William Miller 1807 First edition Hardcover. Paper pastedown. Very Good Minus
Oblong, 18.5 by 21.5 cm. Hand-colored engraved title, followed by 16 hand-colored plates, one of which is folding. Based on the Reverend James Beresford’s “The Miseries of Human Life”, published in 1806 by Miller. (The same work inspired publisher Rudolph Ackermann and artist Thomas Rowlandson as well.) Each plate accompanied by a facing letterpress page of description. Abbey 259. WIth original boards and printed label. Dampstain covering much of label and touching on the surrounding board paper pastedown, which has a moderate amount of other soiling too. The dampstain is heavy for small area of label, but none of the type is unreadable. Also a small finger-scrape hole of the label, again not affecting its content materially. A few light stains and finger smudges of the interior leaves, but overall these come off as crisp and clean.
