La Capo Squadra Piccola Italiana
42 La Capo Squadra Piccola Italiana
Roma Presidenza Centrale dell'Opera Balilla XIV Anno (1936) 11th Edizione Softcover. Very Good
Colorful primer on how to be a good Fascist girl! 12mo. 19 by 14 cm. 110 pp. Scarce, with only three institutional copies located on OCLC First Search -- Slovene Nat. & Study Library, Institute of Information Science -- Izum, and Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. The paucity of surviving copies we would conjecture is a result of the disposable nature of the publication, perhaps a byproduct of its very commonality at the time of its publication, and finally, part and parcel with this, the desire to dispose of any relic of the discredited Fascist regime once it had been toppled. Color illustrations are lushly bright and notwithstanding the nefarious content of the text, very winsome and delightful. The style of illustrations is clearly influenced by Futurist, Art Deco and constructivist notions of aesthetics, all perhaps softened to suit the intended audience. As to this audience, based on the reading requirements, would be secondary school students, but the illustrations would suggest that it was propaganda aimed at younger children as well, to whom it might have been something an older sibling or parent would read to and impart more indirectly. The Opera Nazionale Balilla, the publisher of this book, was a Fascist youth organization begun in 1926. In 1937, it was taken over by the Gioventu Italiana del Littorio, the youth wing of the Fascist Party. The book goes into virtually aspect of a Fascist child's life, including the salute, the uniform, obedience, etc. etc. Not all the advice rendered is obnoxious or corrupted by Fascism, we would add, as it also is promoting such values as thrift, family, hygiene, and the like. Of further interest is its discussion of the Italian colonies, including Ethiopia, which is presented in a colorful product map. Condition: light soiling of the cover, with a few light stains on the white spine and rear cover. Age toning of the leaves. Otherwise, clean, and in our view, about as nice as copy as one is likely to find.

La Comedie Chez Bebe
43 La Comedie Chez Bebe
Paris Maison Quantin 1887 First Editiion Hardcover Very Good F. Bouisset
Book. 4to - over 9¾. Unpaginated, 32 pp. including title. Undated except final plate, which gives date of 1887 and so presumed date of book's publication, and this date is consistent with fashions exhibited in book, plus the book's arts and crafts informed aesthetic which was the rage in the 1880s (Japanese influence, the particular color palette evocative of Greenway in England). Magical illustrations of children in nineteenth century garb, with small blackamoor figures, hobby horses, Japanese lanterns, etc. Front board has soilage and wear, with some crinkling to paper over board. Some light small fox marks on title by hinge edge, but otherwise this leaf is clean. Leaves of book generally clean and book tight. Overall very good and attractive copy of rare and special title.

Le Livre d'images parlantes pour amuser les chers bebes. Avec des voix caracteristiques d'enfants et d'animaux
44 Le Livre d'images parlantes pour amuser les chers bebes. Avec des voix caracteristiques d'enfants et d'animaux
Paris K-B (?) Cloth Very Good
The French version of "The Speaking Book", a toy book with sound, that is still in full working order! .N.d., circa late 1890s. 32 by 23.5 cm, and 5.5 cm thick. Title page followed by eight leaves, all on thick card stock, with chromolithographic plate on verso, facing verse describing the animal or people and their typical sound. With nine ivory tassels or pulls with strings attached, which when pulled out from the foreedge or side of the box, produce various sounds: a cock crowling, birds chirping, a donkey bray, a bleat, a moo, a coo, etc. Described by Peter Haining as "The piece de resistance of any collection of movables, or toy-books for that matter". See Haining "Movable Books", New English Library, 1979, p. 136. Also Gumachian 3839, which suggest a possible earlier dating of "vers 1885". The book was produced in Nuremberg by an unknown firm, according to Haining, and as the title page discloses, translated versions were made available in Spanish, English, and as this copy, in French. The German version, though, was published by Theodore Brand Verlag, which issued at least nineteen editions between the 1880s and the 1930s. So while one can not say that the book is rare, to find it in complete working order can be fairly described as rare, or at least, unusual. The sharp chromolithography of the cover and eight other illustrations is all the obvious earmarks of German and specifically Bavarian printing. Gilt edges. Rubbing and wear to the cloth. The front cover is slightly bowed. The card leaves have a slight dip in the middle. Moderate soiling, with ink marks on the final text page. Foreedge with scattered rubbing, or gilt loss.

Le Prime Voci. Sillabario a Colori Con 15 Tavole a colori
46 Le Prime Voci. Sillabario a Colori Con 15 Tavole a colori
Milano Antonio Vallardi First Edition presumed Hardcover. Paper pastedown. Cloth spine. Very Good Plus
Scarce, with no copies found on OCLC FirstSearch. N.d., circa 1900. Folio. 33 by 24 cm. 36 pp. Regarding the scarcity, we believe that the illustrations may have been used in an ABC/syllable book created in another language, since there are small details, such as architectural, signage, etc. that seem distinctly non-Italian, but even if this is the case, the text necessarily is unique to this edition, since an ABC is not something that can simply be translated from one language to another. The chromolithographs, 15 in all, plus the front cover, exude great charm, capturing a sweet, idyllic childhood, albeit one with the minor intrusions of less pleasant things, such as a gypsy caravan. A small ding on the front cover, and other light wear. Very clean within. A near fine copy.

Les Quatre Elémens (Four volumes, housed in a box)
49 Les Quatre Elémens (Four volumes, housed in a box)
Paris Imprimerie de Maulde et Renou First Edition Cartonnage, Reliure Romantique, Glazed, Gilt Embo Near Fine
Beautiful Restoration France (Biedermeier era) suite of children's books on the four elements of nature: water, fire, air and earth. N.d., circa 1830. 32mo. 83 by 54 mm each. Each volume is 24 pages and includes two wood engraved hand-colored plates, including one showing a large balloon, another of a volcanic eruption, yet another of fireworks. The white bindings are superb examples of glazed cartonnage Romantique gift book bindings, with their ornate gilt ornamentation. The outer box complements the bindings perfectly, with its gilt sides, with embossed or relief decoration, the raised framed color vignette centerpiece on the lid, the red leather base, etc. Scarce, with OCLC showing six institutional copies only (Morgan, Grolier, UCLA, Indiana, UVA, Oxford), and these copies would appear to lack the box with which they were originally issued, as we have here. (USAF Academy has a copy of the "Air" volume as well.) Gumuchian 4662. Some scattered light foxing. Soiling to the lid of the box, and minor gilt loss on the side. Overall, the box itself is very well-preserved.

52 Little Soldier Boys ABC
New York McLoughlin Brothers 1900 Wraps Good Plus
Large 4to. 33 by 26 cm, or 13 by 10.25 inches. (Note that this was also issued in a smaller format.) Unpaginated, with 16 pp. when including the pictorial stiff wrap covers, each letter accompanied by a bright chromolithographic illustration. "A" is for Artilleryman, "B" is for Bugler, and onward, til "Z", for Zouave. All the pictures depict children in adult uniform and situations, wherein lies the charm, and at the time this was published served to burnish the romance of all things martial to little boys who then could play-act and dream of one day donning a military uniform for real. The inside covers have two toned illustrations instead of full color. The rear inside cover features "Little Soldiers' Multiplication Table", and this continues in its doggeril verse the rhyming scheme that also runs through the alphabet. Considerable wear, flattened creases, and soiling to the binding, with a closed tear along the fold. Light soiling within.

55 Moderne Gartenfiguren D.R.G. M. Nr. 292723, 292724, 292725
Friedrichroda, Germany C. F. Ortlepp 1905 First Wraps Near Fine
Scarce, extraordinary trade catalogue for garden ornaments, many whimsical, with eye-catching bright color chromos highly evocative of a children's book. By scarce, we mean not only the non-existence of a physical copy to be found on OCLC First Search (there is apparently an Internet copy at Cambridge), but also, we are not aware of a trade catalogue quite like this one, other than, perhaps some toy catalogues. Oblong, 24.5 by 33.5 cm. Five leaves, each a bold color plate on the recto, and wrap covers. The ornaments are of realistic looking animals, anthropomorphic animals, a maiden, gnomes doing various gnome things, a pith helmeted army officer, comical men, playful frogs, etc. Although we have certainly seen animals and gnomes as lawn ornaments, we are not sure they have ever lived up to the likenesses promised here. Some of the figures are holding signs with warnings or playful messages. Condition: discoloration around the staples on the wraps. Fading to the wraps' orange coloration. A tiny edge chip on one of the plates.

New Departure Coaster Brake The Brake that brought the Bike back
60 New Departure Coaster Brake The Brake that brought the Bike back
New York. Ehle: Winona, Minnesota The New Departures Mfg. Co. Printer: American Lithographic Co., N.Y. This copy distributed by George O. Ehle 1914 First edition Brochure. Wraps Very Good
Colorful promotional brochure for an improved bicycle brake. 16mo. 16 by 9 cm. Unpaginated, 16 pp., including wraps. A narrative poem accompanies delightful color illustrations of family members using the bicycle in a variety of ways. Echoing the verse on each page is a short non-verse plug for an aspect of the brake system and the safer, easier bike resulting. The illustrations stand out for their gentle caricaturing of family types, their playful air and their winsome washes of color. They seem to play on a cheerful nostalgia, although they are depicting then contemporary scenes. The brochure also pitches the medical benefits of bicycle riding. the particular invention, the coaster brake or back pedal brake, was first invented in 1898; we take on trust that new Departures had made some tweak to the invention that advanced bicycle safety and ease of use. Light soiling to the wraps. Other than light age toning, the leaves are otherwise clean and bright.
