With time on our hands during the Coronavirus lockdown, we are reviewing the prices of some of our older stock and adjusting prices of books to ensure that they are the most attractive offering in the marketplace, as it is a reality of the antiquarian market for books that less expensive and mid-level material the trend has been inexorably downward, to the chagrin of booksellers and to the benefit of collectors.  Consequently, we have slashed prices anywhere between 20 percent and 60 percent of these books we have had listed for five years or more.  So we hope that anyone visiting the site might find something that might have become overpriced but now legitimately qualifies as a bargain.

Venetia Antonio Pinelli 1610 Full Vellum Very Good
8, [8], 615 pp. 8vo, 8.25 by 6.25 inches, 21 by 16 cm. Considered one of the most significant pieces of literature from the Middle Ages and a seminal work of literature written in the French language. Also a milestone in historiography as the most important account of the first and second crusades and especially the latter, for which William of Tyre was a contemporary witness. The author produced this work at the request of Almaric I in about 1170 and he continued to work on it until 1183. The work was indeed accepted as unquestioned fact for many centuries and only recently have biases been discerned owing from William's entanglement in the political disputes of the day.

Memorie Storiche Dell'Antichissimo Municipio Ora Terra Dell'Ariccia e Delle Sue Colonie Genzano, E Nemi, Dedicate a Sua Eccellenza Il Signor D. Agostino Chigi, Lucidi, Emmanuele
50 Lucidi, Emmanuele Memorie Storiche Dell'Antichissimo Municipio Ora Terra Dell'Ariccia e Delle Sue Colonie Genzano, E Nemi, Dedicate a Sua Eccellenza Il Signor D. Agostino Chigi
Rome Presso I Lazzarini 1796 First Hardcover Very Good
4to - over 9 - 12" tall. xii, 502 pp. Full and rich history of Ariccia and surrounding towns on the outskirts of Rome, to the Southeast of the City by Castel Gandolfo (the Papal Summer Residence). Ariccia is one of the most ancient cities in Italy, dating to at least the ninth century B.C. This history concentrates mostly on the seventeenth and eighteenth century when it was ruled by the powerful Savelli Chigi family, which produced one pope, Alexander VII, and built a grand residence in the town that has been used many a time as a movie set, such as in Visconti's "Il Gattopardo" ("The Leopard"). While it is over two millenia since the town yielded to Rome's preeminence as a city, Ariccia continued to be the next most important city in Lazio for long stretches of history owing to its propitious location on the Via Appia, the first way station on the road between Rome and Naples, and its pleasant, salubrious climate, in contrast to malalial Rome, made it a favored resort for the powerful of Rome in prior centuries. This copy of the history, a model of municipal histories in its day, is very good. There is some light and occasional foxing, yet little that could be considered disconcerting. The exception would be the four places where a prior owner presses leaves, which left a residue and in one instance, may have created a tiny wormhole type of hole. However, the small amount of loss has no effect on readability where it occurred. The vellum has an attractive mottled, almost tiger striped design. Book is tight. Occasional light pencil notes, a word or two in each case, affecting a handful of pages. Still a very good copy.

54 Mussolini, Arnaldo; Giuseppe Bottai Il Fascismo e Le Corporazione
Roma e Milano Edizioni "Augustea" (Quaderni d"Attualita) 1931 Wraps Good
107 pp. 21 by 16 cm. A comparatively clear and straightforward explanation and defense of the corporatist theory underlying the Fascist movement in Italy. Arnaldo was the brother of Benito and like him, a journalist. This screed came out months before he passed away of cardiac arrest at the age of 46. Before his sudden death, he was instrumental in forging a reconciliation between the Fascist movement and the Catholic Church. The preface to this essay is also notable because of its authorship, Giuseppe Bottai, who was a Futurist who then signed on to the Fascist Party and became one of its most influential proponents. The interior is clean other than a few pencil underlinings. The wraps are chipped, browned and brittle, and there is a crack all the way down the spine.

Napoli Giuseppe Coda 1776 First Edition Paper on card (semi-hardcover) Very Good
Scarce Neapolitan equestrian title, with only five libraries appearing to have it on OCLC FirstSearch. 8vo. 20 by 15 cm. xi, 194 pp. The book is a cross between a primer on horses and coaching and a celebration of the Neapolitan tradition in particular, with special homage to Cajetanus Pezzella, a then renowned horseman and equerry to the Prince of Francavilla. The book has an element also of the hoary Italianate "mirror" book, a self-help book for rulers to gentlemen instructing them on how to behave properly and excel in their role. Novi argues in essence that the dedication of a Pezzella is a sine qua non for mastery in horsemanship while lamenting that such an accomplishment may not be rewarded with heightened social status. Of perhaps greatest interest in the work is how Novi identifies a special "code of honor" amongst the cocchieri napolitani. No less a figure than Benedetto Croce has said that this code serves as a parable of Neapolitan republican character. Light occasional foxing.

Firenze Editori Giolio Giannini e Figlio 1905 First Wraps Very Good
In the form of an illuminated manuscript. The decoration has some three dimensionality or relief. The production is unexpectedly modern, nonetheless, belying its 1905 publication date. Printed on a faux parchment and wraps are a faux vellum. The boards are foxed. Otherwise clean and crisp.

Full Leather Good
12mo. 276 pp., Stampa di vedova Belin, Saint-Cloud is all that is stated regarding publisher/printer, suggesting this copy was printed outside Paris, although it is in the original Italian. Undated, but small inscription dated 1868, and clearly this is a mid-19th century (1860s) edition. Leather boards are bowed out, and at tips of joints separated, yet holding firmly to binding. Leather is soiled, rubbed and/or shelfworn. Text block tight. Pages toned, generally clean with some minor occasional soilage. A curiosity is spine has gilt name of prior owner, "Lion", below title. (FFEP has small embossed stamp of "Louis Lion".) A good copy.

58 Perrin, G. Gli Elementi della Conversazione in Italiano ed Inglese Con Nuovi Dialoghi Facili e Familiari ad Uso delle Scuole
Livorno Fratelli Vignozzi Giovani 1851 Half Vellum, Marbled Boards Very Good
Oblong, 4 by 5 inches, 10 by 13 cm. 336 pp. A type of language primer that has cousins today but is nonetheless quite different in its flavor from conversational textbooks in print nowadays. Some of the differences are reflections of specific changes in culture. Today you are likely to see a request for a servant in the equivalent language book, needless to say. This is but one example of what makes a perusal of a book like this fascinating, and at times, fun. Light scattered foxing, but given the paper stock used, and in the context of Italian books of the same period, comparatively clean. The vellum has soiling.

[nella serie intitotita "Raccolta di Viaggi Dopo Quelli di Cook" esequita tanto per mare quanto per terra, e non pubblicati fin ora in lingua italiana]
Milano Tipografia Sonzogno e Comp. 1816 First Edition thus Wraps Very Good
12mo. (18 by 11 cm.) Five volumes. With 22 plates, most hand-colored. This is the first Italian version of Pallas' travels to Russia. The costume plates are richly colored and lovely. The leaves have a nice rag content and are thus quite clean, even uncommonly so, compared to most Italian publications of the early nineteenth century. The work is complete as of itself; it is a part of a larger series of travel journals translated into Italian at the time. In this series, this book constitutes Tomo XIII. This copy has the original wraps. These have creases and soiling. Still, they can be regarded as well-preserved and of interest from the perspective of publishing practices of the era.

Gli Adornatori del Libro in Italia (Volumes 1 to 3), Petri, Stanislao; Ratta, Cesare; Sapori, Francesco
60 Petri, Stanislao; Ratta, Cesare; Sapori, Francesco Gli Adornatori del Libro in Italia (Volumes 1 to 3)
Bologna Impreso coil Tipi della Scuola D'Arte Tipografica del Comune del Bologna 1923-1926 First Cloth Very Good
Survey of then modern book and bookplate illustration in Italy. This is a continuous, but not complete, run of 9 volume series that ran into the early 1930s, but each issue does standalone and generally speaking can only be found individually. Offered here as a set of three. Folio sized, 14 by 10 inches, or 36 by 26 cm. Vol I has 112 plates, with 328 designs, and was one of a limited edition of 850 copies. Vol II, issued two years later, has 220 plates with 420 designs and was a limited edition of 500. Volume III, issued in 1925 to 1926, with 240 plates (plates 114 to 117 not present but no evidence they ever were present). Limited edition of 850. Plates are not only lovely in and of themselves and a carefully curated cross-section of Italian book art of the day, but also a fine overview of Italian aesthetics then, reacting to the over-ripeness of the nineteenth century with a more pared down, even brutal style at times, that is modernism, whether art deco or even more abstract. Not that there weren't still manifest the more literal historicisms -- one should not think there was a monolithic approach to all this. Bookplate of Augustus Carolus Becker who is probably the same person who ran a private press in Brooklyn. Red cloth binding in original wrappers. Cloth has some stains, soilage and shelfwear but remain presentable. All text blocks are tight and leaves are generally clean. Other than possible missing 4 plates in vol 3, interior-wise a fine set.
