41 Eighth Annual of Advertising Art from Advertisements Shown at the Exhibition of the Art Directors Club, Art Center, New York, May 4 to 29, 1929
New York Art Directors Club of New York 1929 First Edition Cloth Very Good Plus
4to. 29 by 21 cm. [15], 134, [46] pp. With hundreds of pictorial ads reproduced, mostly several to a page, but a significant number full page and 39 pages in full color. With the distance of nine decades, one can see that the close affinity of these fine examples of commercial art and the more high-toned gallery artwork of the day, and that the boundary separating the commerical from the more purely artistic was a blur. In fact, some of the designers, painters or photographers here are revered today for their non-commercial work.. Guy Arnoux, Edward Steichen, Norman Rockwell, Benito, N.C. Wyeth, Georges LePape, Rockwell Kent are among those with recognizable names today. Here abound cloched hatted Flappers, handsome Arrow-collared Ivy Leaguers, Art Deco linealities and sophistication, the dramatic city-scapes evocative of Sloane, Bellows and Hopper, literal historicism. There is a wide range of styles and sensibilities, but an overarching commonality is the effective economy and drama invested in so many of the images. Light wear to the cover.

Fashions of Distinction. Quality Woolens for Fine Custom Tailoring Season of Fall and Winter 1937 1938
45 Fashions of Distinction. Quality Woolens for Fine Custom Tailoring Season of Fall and Winter 1937 1938
New York Reliance Woolen Co., Inc. Cardboard, Fine Spiral Very Good
Folio-sized trade catalogue. 39 by 29 cm. Unpaginated. 40 pp., plus inside of card covers with content. Large color plates of mostly men's fashion, with some stylish women in their company, for the Town & Country set. In each of these plates is a backdrop inset depicting glamorous sporting and other cosmopolitan activities, many in New York, such as the idealized men and women might actively enjoy. So there are images of the Rockefeller Center skating rink, a private plane, an ocean liner, the Yale campus, college football, the downtown New York skyline, horseback riding in Central Park, etc. The fashions are late thirties, with fabulous men's suits, and when women's hems were on the longish side, and the sophistication is such that nowadays it seems hopeless ever re-capturing. In the back there are detailed descriptions of the garments of particular utility to those with a more technical bent.

Fashions of Distinction. Quality Woolens for Fine Custom Tailoring Volume 30-1
46 Fashions of Distinction. Quality Woolens for Fine Custom Tailoring Volume 30-1
New York Reliance Woolen Co., Inc., Glicksman Fashion Co., Inc. 1939 Cardboard, Fine Spiral Very Good
Folio-sized trade catalogue. 39 by 29 cm. Unpaginated. 42 pp. Large color plates of mostly men's fashion, with some stylish women in their company, for the Town & Country set. In each of these there is a backdrop bespeaking the glamorous lifestyle: a-deck a yacht, at the horse races, at an idyllic college campus, at the country club, at a fabulous pool. The fashions are late thirties, with fabulous men's suits that are perhaps a little freer and more casual than a year or two earlier, as ladies' dress hems are moving up towards the knee. In the back there are suggestions for formal attire, a plage devoted to sport backs, and two pages devoted to ladies' trends.

47 Feminine Fashions Past and Present
Cloth Very Good
N.d., circa 1920. 4to. 32 by 24 cm. No title, as it was probably issued. Unpaginated, 22 pp., all with hand-colored illustrations of women's dress, hair-styles, etc. from 1600 to the late 1800s. This would appear a reprint, in a smaller format, of part of a work by H. Rouit, and perhaps this was issued privately, or by a non-publishing commercial concern. While the rendering of women's faces is undistinguished, the colors used in some of the garments are lushly rich, and as a visual survey of the three centuries, it is exemplary.

Fete Foraine
48 Fete Foraine
Paris A. Capendu Wraps Very Good
Scarce juvenile title celebrating French carnival. N.d., circa 1890. Small folio-sized, 31 by 25 cm. 16 pp., including wraps. Vivid chromolithographs, whose artful juxtapositions aid in transporting us back to the nineteenth century carnival and to see the kinetic energy and color of such occasions through a child's eyes. Here is the wonderment without the grime and sordidness that was surely the underside of peripatetic productions. The illustrations bring to life "les Animaux Savants", the wild animals, the organ grinder, the souvenir vendors, Punch and Judy, the minstrel band, the jugglers, the balancing acts, Indianqs, the monkeys, balloons, and then such innocent fun as cycling. No copies located on OCLC. Light soling scattered. Minor roughness by the spine.

Films Paramount. Livre D'Or Saison 1927-1928 Manuel de publicite & d'exploitation
49 Films Paramount. Livre D'Or Saison 1927-1928 Manuel de publicite & d'exploitation
Paris Societe Anonyme Francaise des Films Paramount First Hardcover Very Good
Scarce movie studio promotion, with only copy recorded on OCLC at the BNF. Folio, 38 by 28 cm. Unpaginated, but four pages devoted to each of 42 productions slated for the season. Each of the productions has one full page color plate -- essentially a movie poster mock-up -- and one or two tinted pages with photo images from the upcoming production. Most of the movies are from Hollywood, but there are a few French productions. At the time, Paramount was the largest and most powerful studio, and this lavish promotion, intended for exhibitors, was issued probably right before the release of "The Jazz Singer" and the movie industry was thrown into turmoil. Thus it came out at the precise moment bullish confidence was at its zenith, and in terms of silent movies, the industry had settled into some maturity, soon of course to be shaken. Many of the stars on the Paramount roster then remain well-known to this day, at least by movie afficianados, and a good number of them went on to substantial careers in the thirties and beyond in sound movies: Adolph Menjou, Bebe Daniels, Wallace Beery, Gloria Swanson, Warner Baxter, to name a few. Others are now more solidly associated with Silents, such as Harold Lloyd, Pola Negri and Clara Bow, although they all did make the transition to sound pictures. Visually, a highlight is a color plate of a movie theatre lobby, an image that captures the opulence, pretension and spirit of the commercial film industry in the late twenties. A fun, colorful, flamboyant and informative work for a serious movie buff. The cover has a bronzed surface, with blindstamping of the title, the Paramount insignia, etc. Restorations to the joints. Clean within.

Funny Folks Album. Master Chubb and his Dog
50 Funny Folks Album. Master Chubb and his Dog
First NA Very Good
N.p., no publisher given, N.d., circa 1890. Eight paneled leporello, each with a chromolithographic illustration, and six lines of rhymed verse telling the story of the mishievous dog who simply can't contain himself when he espies geese, a boy, cattle, etc. Only the sight of a whip at the end brings contrition, which we trust is ephemeral. The dog looks most like a dachshund, although the breed isn't specified, and one can't be sure that is what the artist intended. Closed, oblong, 7 by 12 cm. Opening to be 81 cm long. Scarce, with three copies found on OCLC First Search (Melbourne, Monash U., National Library of Scotland). No copies located in the U.S. Condition: hinge of cover unobtrusively strengthened with rice paper. Flattened edge creases, microscopic edge chip, and light edge soil to cover.

52 Geschiedenis van Jan Klaassen Geschenk voor de Jeugd. Met 6 Plaatjes.
Utrecht J.H. van Wees Jr. (not listed in the book itself) First Edition Presumed Full Morocco Very Good Plus
N.d., circa 1870. Unpaginated, 12 pp., including wraps which are bound in, followed by 33 leaves, all blank, of card thickness, giving the slender volume some thickness. 18 by 12 cm. Scarce, with only one copy located on OCLC (at the University of Leiden). The plates depict Punch and Judy, with a baby, throwing the infant in the air, Judy clubbing Punch, a circus dog biting Punch's nose, a hangman and Punch. Accompanying the rather elegant chromolithographs, which are framed with a decorative puppet stage box, is a narrative poem telling of the doings, and this is rendered in Dutch. The deep blue morocco has corner gilt ornament plus a gilt centerpiece, with five raised bands on the spine and gilt ornamentation in the compartments between bands. The binding is more modern and is pristine. Two leaves of the Geschiedenis have minor paper repairs in their upper corners. Some light offsetting from the plates.

53 Hausgärten Skizzen und Entwürfe aus dem Wettbewerb der Woche
Berlin August Scherl 1908 First Card thick boards, or limp hardcover. Very Good Plus
Oblong, 22.5 by 30.5 cm. xviii, [4], 118, [2] pp. With six color plates of paintings of park-like gardens, stunning villas and bucolic settings. Several pages are devoted to each of the country houses discussed, with multiple illustrations of the house and gardens, house plans and garden lay-outs, and detail renderings of benches, pavillions, trellises and other highlights of the gardens. Perhaps most unusual is that costs for creating the gardens are set forth. The book was organized around a competition; the properties shown are the winning entries, with the top entry receiving a prize of 1,000 marks. All the properties have names, or "Mottos" as they are called here, meant in some way to capture something about their location or essence. Quite a beautiful book, capturing the most appealing aspects of domestic Wilhelmine culture as enjoyed by the affluent. Condition: light wear.

Im Circus
56 Im Circus
Hardcover Good
N.d., circa 1880s. N.p. 8vo. 19.5 by 13 cm. Unpaginated, 12 pages of color plates, including images on endpapers. As there is no author, illustrator, publisher, printer or date given, we know of no easy way to locate other copies, but we stongly believe this is a scarce book, which was probably sold as a souvenir at circuses in the German-speaking world. The first double paged plate depicts several circus performers -- the MC animal tamer, a pretty lady seated sideways on a horse, a clown, a hound, and a caged lion. On the following pages are shown three or four different circus performers per page, each with an one or two line rhymed description, often with a stage name given. These include clowns, acrobats, equestrians, aerialists, a strongman, performing animals, etc. A few of the acts are ones we didn't know had existed, such as a dancing pig, but it is in the very nature of circus for some novelty acts to come and go, while most are evergreen. Condition: heavy soiling to the cover. A few surface chips to the heavy cardboard stock. Pages of heavy card have heavy age toning. Some loss of paper pastedown on rear cover.

It's All in the Draw
58 It's All in the Draw
Wraps Very Good
N.d., circa 1890s. Oblong, measuring 24 by 14 cm, 9.5 by 5.5 inches. 20 pp, including cover. Full of caricatures of four poker players and their various expressions and reactions to various hands. On facing pages are witty rhymed captions incorporating in the lettering paraphernalia associated with the game of poker. An unusual item that highlights the emotional of this most psychologically complex of card games. On the second to last page is an advertisement for the United States Cartridge Company, and facing it on the last lear is a reproduction of a print showing hunters around a campfire, with deer strapped to a branch. With no publisher given, it is probable that this was issued by said company. Minor wear to the wrappers, made of heavy card stock, as are all the leaves. A small chip to the surface in a corner of the front cover. Small surface abrasion by this corner, front cover. Bound with thin cord. The center of three holes has tear to the edge, and the cords, which can be adjusted, are virtually impossible to set just right. Either they make the book too tight or too loose.

Japanese Album of 24 Color Woodcuts
59 Japanese Album of 24 Color Woodcuts
Hardcover Very Good
N.d., circa 1905. 35.5 by 27 cm, opening vertically. The woodcuts are generally about 30 by 24 cm, give or take (they are not all the same size). They are of varying topics, including then modern Japanese officials in Western-style uniform and regalia, sumarai and warriors, horsemen, religious ceremonies, performances, beautiful ladies, etc. In other words, a wide variety, not including views and scenery (as the primary subject matter, that is). We believe that the album might have been created as a salesman's sampler or the like, but we are not completely certain of that. Essentially, they are a lovely collection of assorted colorful Japanese plates. Sunning to part of cloth patterned binding (and darkened where a book must have sat for a long time). Ribbon ties.

Japanese Album of Woodblocks Mostly of Abstract Designs, with Some Stylized Zoological and Human Subjects as well
60 Japanese Album of Woodblocks Mostly of Abstract Designs, with Some Stylized Zoological and Human Subjects as well
Wraps, string ties. Very Good
Circa 1915. 24 by 16.5 cm. 25 leaves (50 pp.) doubled over, in the Japanese style, of which 37 pages are color plates, and nine pages are of calligraphy or text. Of the illustrations, three are two page spreads. Subject-wise, we count 21 of the illustration pages devoted to abstract designs, ten with animal studies, some of which are also abstract to some degree, whether in the stylization of the animal or in the background, three are predominantly of human subjects, and three are a hybrid. These categories are somewhat abitrary, admittedly. Generally the colors are bright and vivid, and many of the abstract designs, the dragons, and ornate birds are extraordinarily striking. The animal studies, besides dragons, include a monkey and fish. Many of the designs would have had a general applicability but would certainly have been possible kimono styles. Soiling on the wrap covers.
