With time on our hands during the Coronavirus lockdown, we are reviewing the prices of some of our older stock and adjusting prices of books to ensure that they are the most attractive offering in the marketplace, as it is a reality of the antiquarian market for books that less expensive and mid-level material the trend has been inexorably downward, to the chagrin of booksellers and to the benefit of collectors.  Consequently, we have slashed prices anywhere between 20 percent and 60 percent of these books we have had listed for five years or more.  So we hope that anyone visiting the site might find something that might have become overpriced but now legitimately qualifies as a bargain.

Histoire D'Une Maison, Viollet-le-Duc, Texte et Dessins par
41 Viollet-le-Duc, Texte et Dessins par Histoire D'Une Maison
Paris Bibliotheque D'Education et de Recreation, J. Hetzel et Cie. Decorated Cloth Very Good
N.d., circa 1870s. 8vo, 260 pp. The gifted, energetic and controversial Viollet-le-Duc had a profound effect on architectural thought. Responsible for the restoration of Reims Cathedral and the ambitious, successful restoration and appreciation of the Medieval walled city of Carcassone, Voillet-le-Duc was more concerned with capturing the beauty and overarching finest qualities of the past rather than the fine details that were strictly-speaking historically accurate. In this he was at loggerheads with the more literal purist, the art critic John Ruskin, whose views have in recent times been more in favor despite his not having been a trained architect. In any case, this book is one of the best surveys of the anatomy of house and is especially good in describing the various trades which contribute to the building of a house. Organized as a novelistic dialogue, the treatment also superbly avoids the trap of a dry exegesis that usually afflicts even popular surveys. Clean and tight within. Light sunning to the spine. Minor repair of the upper spine tip was made.

How to Use the Vigoro Beauty Plans, Wagstaff, C. D.
42 Wagstaff, C. D. How to Use the Vigoro Beauty Plans
[Chicago] Swift & Company Wraps, envelope. Fine
12 page brochure, plus two large folded sheets with brightly colored illustrations of three different plans and a large outer envelope with illustrations conveying an idea of the contents. Plans are based on the drawings of C.D. Wagstaff, who it is asserted was one of the foremost landscape architects in America at the time. N.d., circa 1930s. N.p., but surely Chicago, where Swift was based. Brochure is 12mo, 18 by 14 cm, envelope is 31.5 by 24 cm, two sided posters, with the plans and designs rendered in color, each 61 by 42 cm. Two of the plans are for comparatively modest suburban homes, one a bungalow, the other, a tidy cottage, and one plan is for a decidedly more upscale residence of a house of eclectic design, with elements of both Colonial Revival and Mediterannean styles. All, though, are shown to be greatly enhanced with extensive, artfully arranged landscaping that creates a dreamy park-like setting. Scarce -- only two institutions listed on OCLC as having this, or part of this -- U. of Minnesota, Canadian Center for Architecture.

43 Westall, William and John Gendall Views of Country Seats of the Royal Family, Nobility and Gentry of England (Two Volumes) . . . With Particulars, Historical and Descriptive
1830 R. Ackermann and Co. London First Half Calf Very Good
Scarce, with only two copies listed on OCLC First Search, at Toronto and New South Wales. 8vo. 24 by 14.5 cm. viii, 136, vi, 136 pp. With 146 hand-colored aquatint plates after Westall, Gendall, Shepherd, Stockdale, others. The plates are lovely, both for the beautiful palatial buildings depicted and the execution of the prints -- the fineness of the artwork, and quality of the hand-coloring. Tooley 13. This is a very extensive documentation of the stately homes of England -- besides the justifiably famous mansions such as Woburn Abbey, Belvoir Castle, and Knole are scores of lesser known yet still immensely grand and gracious residences, all painted to great advantage, in uncompromised halcyon settings. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, marbled endpapers, marbled painting on the fore-edges. Joints starting. Upper spine extremities restored professionally, but still slight loss of gilt decoration on Vol. 1. Some flattened dog-earing of the leaves. Plates generally clean and bright. Light to moderate offsetting of the plates.
