New Departure Coaster Brake The Brake that brought the Bike back
61 New Departure Coaster Brake The Brake that brought the Bike back
Bristol, Connecticut The New Departures Mfg. Co. 1905 First Decorative Pin Near Fine
Wonderful "pinwheel" calendar with comical color illustrations of elongated, El Greco-ized men attired in eighteenth century garb riding bicycles. Each month is marked by a card, most of which is dominated by the illustration. At the top of each card are four or more lines of rhymed promotional doggeril. The cards are 20 by 8 cm, and one can fan them out, with the decorative pin acting as a pivot point. The color palette is red, gold and green mostly. Scarce, with no copies of this located on OCLC or elsewhere, and the format, combined with the original illustrations, we also find quite novel. With an used mailing envelope.

Nieuw A.B.C. Boekje, voor leerzame kinderen. Met Plaatjes.
62 Nieuw A.B.C. Boekje, voor leerzame kinderen. Met Plaatjes.
Amsterdam G. van der Linden
N.d., circa 1860s. 17 by 11 cm. Unpaginated, 16 pp. Each letter is accompanied by a simple woodcut and rhymed couplet about a word beginning with that letter, like any ABC. Slightly more unusual is that the letter is represented in four or five typefaces, from a highly ornamental fraktur Gothic to a more modern but still ornamental design. Following are sections on vowels, consonants, spelling exercises and three short stories. An uncommon ABC, with only four copies listed on OCLC FirstSearch. A few minor edge chips.

63 Opportunity Hour for Amateurs. The New Party Game with a Thousand Laughs.
New York American Toy Works (Atwo Product) 1937 First Edition NA Very Good
Colorful, fun spoof on amateur showbiz! An uncut game sheet on linen-like paper measuring oblong, 46 by 55 cm (18 by 22 inches). Depicted on a theater stage are a juvenile crooner, a banjo-playing cowboy, two svelte girl singers, a burlesque comedian, a performer in black face and a slick announcer. The playing pieces, shaped like microphones, are to be cut out from the top of the page, with directions at the base. Included is the original envelope, which measures 23.5 by 29 cm. The characters are send-ups of theater types of the day, but one can not say that any of the characters are specific caricatures of say, Jolson or Frank Fay. Scarce, with no copies found elsewhere. Light wear.

Painting Plays for Rainy Days with Easy Drawing Lessons (Easy Lessons in Drawing and Painting)
65 Painting Plays for Rainy Days with Easy Drawing Lessons (Easy Lessons in Drawing and Painting)
Chicago Thompson & Thomas 1903 Decorated Cloth Very Good
Oblong 9.5 By 7.5 Inches. Book. Unpaginated, between 200 and 300 pages, with about 20 published colored, with notion that the user of the book would emulate these pages. Only about three of the pages have been colored by a child, and they were done neatly, making for a remarkably clean copy of a children's coloring book of the early twentieth century. Many of the drawings have a Greenaway style. This is a very good copy. Cover has soilage and some wear by the spine tips, and one prelim page has starting separation, but otherwise tight, and interior clean.

Panoramic Pictures at the Zoo
66 Panoramic Pictures at the Zoo
New York Sam'l Gabriel Sons & Company Leporello Very Good
N.d., circa 1920s. Oblong leporello with six pop-up cages housing lions, tigers, camels, zebras, deer and bears. Behind the cage bars lie a more naturalistic setting, as opposed to the stone and brick of standard zoo architecture of the era. The front cover depicts a zoo elephant ride, with tots sitting aloft, and the rear board features buffalo. A most charming toy book, which stands easily upright, allowing for the cage pop-ups to be opened to a more three dimensional viewing. The panels are attached by strips of red cloth. On the opposite side from the cage pop-ups are descriptions of various animals and black and white illustrations, and these include other animals such as kangaroos, monkeys and ostriches. Given the construction of the accordian-like book, there is a suggestion of looseness to it, but the panels are firmly attached to one another and the pop-ups, which require a little manual assistance in pulling out, are completely functional and attractive. Two of the red cloth binding strips are replacements.

69 Playtime in Dixie Compliments of Lord & Gage
Reading, Pennsylvania; New York Lord & Gage; Jas. McCreery & Co. Wraps Good
Scarce, with only one copy found on OCLC First Search (at Duke, and not identical, coming from a different department store). Stereotpyical imagery of black people playing instruments, baseball, coon hunting, etc. N.d., circa 1905. 12mo. 19 by 13.5 cm. Unpaginated, 16 pp., including wraps. The imagery is not rabidly or insultingly rascist; at the time, it might have been viewed as gentle and affectionate in its portrayal of blacks. Still, in unquestionably drew on stereotypes, and one can also not look at the drawings and fail to see a strong element of condescension towards blacks as simpler, more primitive, etc. If we suspend our latter-day judgment at the content, we can admire the straightforward and simple charm of the drawing, which is rendered in black, white and red. The style of the illustration, the lettering and the overall composition is one we find typical in the first decade of the 20th century. This brochure was obviously a department store freebie hand-out, this one, as part of the Xmas season, and we can infer from the other copy of which we are aware that several department stores must have ordered copies for distribution, with some customization for their own promotions. Given the ephermeral nature of the presentation, it is not surprising that there are not an abundance of copies surviving. Moderate soiling to the wraps. Long closed tear along joint.

71 Pretty Farm Pictures. A Big Book for the Little Ones.
London and New York Ernest Nister and E. P. Dutton & Co. First Edition Presumed Boards attached by cloth spine Very Good
N.d., circa 1890. With 19 large chromolithographs, including title, of animals and some children in bucolic settings, all on heavy card which gives the book real heft and durability. The size, 11 by 12 inches each, and prettiness of the illustrations sets this juvenile farm animal compilation from the common fare of the day, and surely the endearing cuteness of the images has led many a time to this book being broken for the purpose of framing the prints. Some soiling of the covers. The red cloth used on the spine has some fraying and weakening. Minor soiling of some margins within, but most of this could be considered age toning. one plate, "Milking Time", ha paper loss in right margin, not affecting or coming close to the image.

Paris Chez Saintin, Libraire de la Cour 1823 Hardcover Very Good
12mo. 133 by 112 mm. ii, 128 pp. Sixteen plates, thirteen of which are hand-colored, and each of these thirteen have two images. Comparatively scarce, with four copies showing up on OCLC First Search (three of an 1813 edition), and none of these copies appear to have hand-coloring going on. Other than frontis which depicts a boy painting a girl standing as his model, all the hand-colored illustrations are of animals, and the text describes these animals, with some emphasis placed on aspects of relevance to the artist. The final three plates, all non-colored, concern human characteristics. Original pink cartonnage binding, with silk corners, possibly later, and later blank endpapers. Gilt spine title with some rubbing. Scattered light foxing. Light wear overall.

Roly Poly Pets
73 Roly Poly Pets
New York Charles E. Graham & Co. Card Very Good
Scarce, with no copies located on OCLC FirstSearch. 25 cm tall, Lower round ball part has a diameter of 16 cm. Unpaginated, eight leaves, with illustrations on rectos, text on facing versos. The book proper eccentrically opens from the back vertically. It is, though, the exterior "toy" that is of greatest interest. The lower ball has a weight inside the front cover that enables the "ball" to rock back and forth like a traditional roly poly, with the horse above rocking in tandem. The cover has been repaired where it once cracked by the horse's withers, and another crack line, this one inevitable, runs just above the ball where effectively the book is hinged.

78 The ABC Nursery Rhymes. Mounted on Linen.
New York McLoughlin Brothers Very Good Minus
N.d., 1890s. Large 4to. 30 by 25 cm. Unpaginated, 16 pp. including wrap covers. Charming chromolithographic illustrations to each nursery rhyme snippet that accompanies each letter. In this book McLoughlin, a master a repackaging, drew from his overstuffed backlist treasure trove for excerpted illustrations and verse, so we have "F" for "A Frog he would a-wooing go", "K" is for "Old King Cole", etc. But some of the rhymes and illustrations may just be new to this book, such as "Z", which is "a Zany, Who was a great fool". Whatever, the case, it is an winsome, and sweet, compilation. On the inside rear cover, where in such books there is often an arithmetic piece, is a rendering of "10 little Nigger Boys". This, as well as the inside front cover, is illustrated in two toned instead of full color. Cover heavily soiled, with minor abrasions at corners. Light soiling within. One corner bumped.

80 The Animals' Snowball Match
Wraps Very Good
An obscure, charming children's book containing two narrative poems, the first, "The Animals' Snowball Match", the second, "The Wooden Soldier". The booklet, 12mo, 24 pp., was a modest production, for better or worse, but accompanying it are the original ink drawings which are more impressive in their un-printed form. Drawings include images of storks, bears, walruses, hippos, elephants, monkeys, and tin soldiers. There are twelve pieces in all, each with a drawing on board or heavy card, and these cover all the illustrations, including the front cover, of the book. Scarce title, with no copies located on OCLC, and the brochure contains no copyright or authorial information, suggesting that this was perhaps privately printed for a business as a marketing gift of some sort. N.d., circa 1900.
