You & Me "Toi et Moi", Geraldy, Paul (1885-1983). A free translation by Alice Herbert. Marian Marsh, calligrapher and illuminator.
68 Geraldy, Paul (1885-1983). A free translation by Alice Herbert. Marian Marsh, calligrapher and illuminator. You & Me "Toi et Moi"
1941 Full Morocco Near Fine
A stylish twentieth century version of the illuminated manuscript, which honors the tradition while not slavishly hewing to its Medieval ornamentation. 8vo. 17.5 by 11.5 cm. Unpaginated, 64 pp. Rendered on vellum leaves. Contains 31 poems, translated from the French, by Paul Geraldy. The beautiful calligraphy is rendered primarily in black, with red used for most titles and gilt reserved for the most salient titles. Most extraordinary, though, are the many vignette illustrations and ornaments of birds, butterflies, seraphs, flowers, stars, masks and shells. These are integrated seamlessly with the text. They somehow manage to exhude a charisma without a wisp of vulgarity, and their effect is bound to be sheer intoxication. The anthology of naive, or deliberately simple, poems, "Toi et Moi" first appeared in 1912. Dedicated to Lisbet Marx, who was the original owner of the manuscript and might have commissioned it. Minor rubbing to the spine bands. Clean, bright and tight otherwise.

Doctrine des Moeurs, Qui Represents en Cent Tableaux, Gomberville, Marin Le Roy de
69 Gomberville, Marin Le Roy de Doctrine des Moeurs, Qui Represents en Cent Tableaux
Paris A. Soubron 1683 Full Calf Very Good
[14],412 pp. + 100 emblem plates, all full page. 12mo., 6 by 4 inches. Decorative devices, head and foot pieces throughout in the form of bouquets, friezes, vases, baskets, as well as decorated letter at the beginning of each section (100 in all). Plates are wonderful baroque woodcuts each illustrating a moral. This would appear to be a second or third edition, the first being in 1646. Brunet II 1658, who describes the work as "now a bit rare", mentions a 1684 edition without citing this earlier one (and clearly meaning a different edition). Graesse III 114 mentions a 1681 edition without detail and thus this might essentially be. Tight. With some light scattered soilage, but overall impression is clean other than on some of the plates a prior owner wrote Latin translations of the maxims beneath the printed captions -- never affecting the pictorial image. Also old handwritten cursive notes on title and blank verso. Attractively rebound in full modern calf with green and red spine labels.

74 Hansi, L'Oncle (Johann Jacob Waltz, or Jean-Jacque Waltz) Mon Village Ceux Qui N'Oublient Pas
Paris H. Floury 1920 Hardcover Very Good No Jacket Hansi and Victor Huen
Oblong, measuring 32 by 24 cm, 12.5 by 9.5 inches. Nostalgic look at Alsatian village of yore, and as much of Hansi's writings, about the French-ness of the village and demonizing the German occupiers, who were only recently driven out at the time this copy was issued. The illustrations exude the naive charm of Hansi's best work, whose legacy was to create an enduring visual image of Alsatian life. The decorated cloth boards have soiling and the fabric is worn by the corners and the spine extremities. Inside the pages have age toning but otherwise are clean.

76 Hesse, Raymond; Aquarelles by Dubout De Phryne a Abelard
Paris A L'Embleme du Secretaire 1936 Limited First Edition Half Morocco with Slipcase Near Fine
No. 88 of 600 copies printed on Papier Royal Vidalon, or a heavy stock paper (near card thickness). 4to, 159 pp. Collection of several risque to raunchy adaptations of old stories, myths or legends, some biblical, some from Greek or Roman myth, yet others from history, each with the over-the-top ludicrous, farcical and bawdy illustrations of Dubout and colored with fitting luridness. Some of the parts are entitled "Phryne Devant L'Areopage", "Le Proces de Socrate", "Le Jugement de Salomon", "Les Tonneaux des Danaides", "Jacob et Esau", "Romulus et Remus", "Le Jugement de Paris", "Cassandra", "Le Premier Mariage de Samson", "L'Affaire Abelard". There is minor rubbing on the spine. The papers used on the boards and endpapers have a exquisite silken tissue quality and striking modernist diaper design. The interior is pristine and tight. The slipcase also has some minor rubbing but otherwise retains structural strength and integrity.

77 Illustrations by Adrien Baggary. Stories by Denis Diderot, Le Comte de Caylus, Le Cardinal de Bernis, Le Chevalier de Boufflers, Jacques Cazotte, Voltaire, Charles Pigault-Lebrun, etc. Florilege des Conteurs Galants du XVIIIieme Siecle (Two Volumes)
Paris 1931, 1932 Limited First Edition Half Morocco over Marbled Paper Very Good

With 24 color plates and 40 black and white illustrated plates in the two volumes. Bound attractively with decorated morocco, with various curly-cue gilt ornamentation. The set epitomizes the inter-war French vogue for soft core erotica, here with literary pretensions or pedigree from the eighteenth century, that hotbed of erotic gamboling before squelched by the Revolution. Some spotting on the fore-edges. Rubbing on the spine extremities and the edges. Overall a handsome set.

Histoire des Quartre Fils Aymon: Tres Nobles et Tres Vaillans Chevaliers, Introduction and notes by Charles Macilly
78 Introduction and notes by Charles Macilly Histoire des Quartre Fils Aymon: Tres Nobles et Tres Vaillans Chevaliers
Paris H. Launette 1883 Limited First Edition Hardcover Very Good Plus Grasset, Eugene
Book. 4to - over 9 - 12" tall. One of 200 unnumbered copies on Papier de Chine. Georgeous color illustrations by Grasset and printed in chromotypography by Charles Grillot. A retelling of the "Chanson de Geste" of Charlemagne and his barons, this is one of the most important and influential illustrated books of the Art Nouveau era. Ray, in the Art of French Illustration, describes the book as epochal! Gillot persuaded Grasset to furnish "Merovingian" style designs to showcase chromolithographic book illustration. As stunning as the illustrations proper is how they were woven in and incorporated into borders and set on the page. See Ray, The Art of French Illustrated Book 357, 464, 465. Ironically, Grasset himself was ambivalent about the whole process of book illustration, which he found onerous in how it forced him to confine his visual ideas to the spatial limitations of the page. His splendid results, though, were surely the product of how he approached the project. He allegedly began with the borders and worked in, sometimes augmenting these with further decoration, and others, with full illustration, and generally, elements of both. The illustrations track the story very well and indeed, the book can be read using the illustrations alone, and ignoring the text. As far as influence, one sees it clearly in the wonderful series of young adult biographies issued by Librairie Furne (the Louis', Richelieu, Napoleon, etc.), many works of Job, etc. etc. Joints rubbed. A few minor spots on brown morocco. Original wrappers bound in.

Delightful naive comic strip illustrations to accompany amusing high jinks. Binding is tight. Shelfwear to pictorial boards along edges and corners. Slight bowing to front oblong board. Pages have heavy age toning, as part and parcel of paper used. Other than very minor soil spots and a trivial closed tear, very good.

80 Jacques Delille L'Homme des Champs, ou Les Georgiques Francoises Nouvelle Edition Augmentee, Avec Figures
Paris Chez Levrault, Schoell et Cie. (L'Imprimerie de P. Didot L'Aine) 1805 Full Morocco Very Good Minus
8vo. 225 pp. With four plates and eight vignette illustrations, two each at the beginning of each of the four "chants", all hand-colored sensitively. These are by Catel and engraved by Buchorn, Guttenberg, Halderwang et Mayer. Cohen-de Ricci 279. An updated adaptation of Virgil's masterpiece. The contemporary hand-coloring sets this copy apart from others of this work. The soft coloring -- in the spirit of Fragonard or Boucher -- perfectly suits the bucolic subject matter. Red morocco boards are particularly thick, rendering a box-like solidity to the book as an object, which is further enhanced with gilt work along edges. Light foxing throughout but generally not affecting significantly the plate and illustration pages, thus suggesting that it is very much a function of the acidity of the paper used for the text proper.
