81 Jean Cabanel, editor, author of preface. Dubout, illustrator. Poetry by Ronsard, du Bellay, et. al. La Muse Libertine. Florilege des Poetes Satyriques Orne de Quarante Aquarelles de Dubout
Paris Editions du Valois; Impriermies Union et Dechaux 1957 Limited Edition Wraps. With slipcase Near Fine
No. 3871 of 4569. 4to. 255 pp. Anthology of late Medieval and Renaissance to Enlightenment French poetry that is sensual, lewd, erotic or plain naughy. The range is from the sublime to naughty, with the Dubout illustrations decidedly of the latter camp, and thus the soft porn campiness of the whole production. Being French, the anthology exudes style and class, even when it most boisterously violates all standards of decorum. Represented here are the greats Ronsard, du Bellay, Voltaire, Diderot and many others, less well-known, from the 15th through the 18th century, all underscoring the point that the fun in vulgarity is nothing new. A clean copy, with the only qualification that there is a minor closed tear on the spine head, and the lightest of crease marks on the base of the wraps. The slipcase has minor wear but matches the volume perfectly and is an attractive bonus.

83 Jules Renard. Illustrations by Pierre Bonnard Histoire Naturelles
Paris Ernest Flammarion. Imprimerie Hemmerle, Petit et Cie. Half Morocco over Boards with Decorated Paper Past Very Good
N.d., circa 1910. 12mo. 346 pp. Although Renard's work inspired a number of famous artists, Bonnard's simple, deliberately naive-styled line drawings perfectly match the highly economic whimsy of the prose. Original wraps are bound in. The binding is particularly lovely, with half green morocco and boards covered with a modernist abstract design. Minor rubbing along the joints. The pages are age toned. Overall, a tight and clean copy.

Fables De La Fontaine. Cent Fables Choisies, La Fontaine, Introduction By L. Tarsot
84 La Fontaine, Introduction By L. Tarsot Fables De La Fontaine. Cent Fables Choisies
Paris Henri Laurens, Librairie Renouard 1932 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Morin, Henry
Book. 4to - over 9¾. 199 pp. with mix of color and black and white illustrations. 12 nearly full page color illustrations. Color has a light almost pastel like palette, and illustrations by Morin have a winsome fusion of simplicity with pretty detail; or with great economy, he is able to transport us to another time, place and reality. Here are the best known tales of La Fontaine. Some wear to blue decorated cloth, with a few frayed threads along borders and cloth worn through in lower corners. Rubbing along gutter. Color blindstamped animals still bright. Inside pages are toned yet clean. A very good copy.

Fables Choisies Mises En Vers (4 Vols.), La Fontaine, Jean De. Illustrated by Jean-Baptiste Oudry
86 La Fontaine, Jean De. Illustrated by Jean-Baptiste Oudry Fables Choisies Mises En Vers (4 Vols.)
Paris Desaint et Saillant 1755 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine Oudry, Jean-Baptiste; 42 Engravers, Including Cochin, Tardieu, Prevost, Chedel, Lempereur, Etc.
Book. Elephant Folio - over 15. 1755 - 1759. 4 volumes, 420 by 285 mm or 16.5 by 11 inches. With 276 (1 extra) illustrated plates designed by Oudry (1685 - 1755), as well as half-titles, engraved title pages, head and tailpieces. Extra plate is the second version of the plate found by page 112 of Vol 3, for the Fable CLXXII, "Le Singe et le Leopard".) Bound in is the first state of the plate, which did not have the word "Leopard" on the banner. Included, but not presently bound, is the second state, with "Leopard" on the banner. Contemporary calf rebacked preserving spines, covers panelled in gilt. Spines tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments containing urn motif, with red morocco lettering labels. Marbled endpapers. Some very intermittent spotting. Faint dampstain to front blanks of Vols 1 and 2. Hinges strengthened, rebacked. Some restoration to spine. Overall, a magnificent copy of one of the pinnacles of French illustrated book art. Oudry achieved his first success as a portraitist, and he was elected to the Royal Academy in 1719 as a historical painter. After he became the director of the Beauvais tapestry factory he began to amuse himself with subjects from La Fontaine's Fables. He made 276 sketches in all between 1729 and 1735. These visualizations of La Fontaine so harmonize with the verse form as to earn Oudry a reputation as the "La Fontaine of Painting". The plates contained in this book have had an incalculable influence on animal illustrators afterwards, and much of the art work has been directly reproduced or adapted in designs used in other areas of the decorative arts such as wallpaper design, fabric design, porcelain, etc.

The contemporary calf spine head of volume 1 has chip and slight chewing. Elsewhere the leather has scuffs and light rubbing, but still attractive. 95 Lisle, Leconte de. Illustrations by Odette Denis Les Poemes Barbares Vingt-six eaux-fortes originales dessinees et gravees par Odette Denis
Paris Le Livre de Plantin 1948 Limited Edition Full Calf Near Fine

The illustrations complement and augment perfectly the already classic verses about wild animals of de Lisle. Scarce, with the only copy located on OCLC FirstSearch in the Bibliotheque Nationale. 96 Longus. Illustrations by [Marcel] Vertes (1895-1961) Translated into French by Jacques Amyot. Edited by P. L. Courier Dahpnis et Chloe
Paris Manuel Bruker 1954 First Limited Edition Wraps Very Good
No. 12 of 20. With a folio of three original ink drawings signed by Vertes, a folio of 10 engravings that were rejected for use in the book proper, and a suite of all the engravings used in the book. This copy is also inscribed by the artist to the collector/owner, which is not something called for in the limitation. 204 pp. Stylistically, the Hungarian-American Vertes brought a loose, near-abstraction sensibility to what nonetheless remained lucidly representational art. He executed his images with a spare economy while keeping his lines fluid and flowing. At times his output could look slapdash and improvisational; this effect, though, splendidly captured the emphemeral moment in an ever-changing scene, and we can sense easily movement and motion. Vertes was a modernist very much of his time and place. His was an oeuvre that dared to please the average man, and thus his work decorate such places as the lobby of the Carlyle Hotel in New York. Vertes was also a costume designer who won an Academy Award for his art direction and costume designs in the movie "Moulin Rouge" released in 1952.

98 Loti, Pierre [pseudonym for Louis Marie-Julien Viaud]. Illustrations by Maurice de Becque. Reproductions (the pochoir process) by Jean Saudé Le Mariage de Loti
Paris Librairie Lemercier 1927 First Three Quarter Morocco. Wooden boards. Fine
No. 54 of 255 copies in limitation, on velin pur fil Lafuma. Beautiful 3/4 morocco binding with unusual wood (or wood veneer) boards and matching wood veneer endpapers. And leather painted "onlay" illustration mounted onto spine! 4to. 28 by 22 cm. 208 pp., with 18 color plates, and twelve vignettes, and a second suite of all the illustrations in just outline form bound in at the end, along with the spine to the wraps. (The wrap cover serves as one of the three title pages.) In its original title, "Raharu", this is the novel that put Loti on the map in 1880, and it served as the inspiration for Leo Delibes' once popular opera, "Lakmé", which premiered just three years later. Essentially, Loti was the authorial counterpart to Gauguin in plunging whole into Tahitian society, and his pen-name, "Loti", followed from this novel. Without question one of Loti's greatest strengths as a writer was the color he brought to his descriptions and exotic subject matter, and these pochoirs most definitely honor and capture that mastery. The bright plates and vignettes could be mistaken for actual painting, and they are a feast to the eye. Apparently scarce, with the only copy we could locate at the BNF -- no copies of this edition were found at all on OCLC or in commerce. Light rubbing of front joint.
