Publisher Philadelphia Samuel Robinson. Color lithography by Rosenthal. 1851
Seller ID 006469
N.d., 1851. Large 8vo. 216 pp. 38, of 40, chromolithographs, and these have hand-colored touch-ups. Missing the Alm's House Bird and the Frontis. The plates and accompanying sketches lampoon various well-known Philadelphia figures of the day. While most of the personages may now be obscure, a knowledge of them is not a prerequisite for enjoying the droll illustrations and the mock scholarship of the text describing the particular pseudo-species depicted. Ex-lib, with indicia the buckram cloth binding, the library call number lower spine, a library bookplate on FEP and a mounted check out slip on RFEP. Happily none of the text pages nor plates have any library markings. The pages are heavily age toned, with occasional fox marks and light soil marks. Plates, other than the toning, generally clean. Cracked hinge.
