Album of Twenty Small Swiss Watercolored Views
2 Album of Twenty Small Swiss Watercolored Views
Full Morocco. Two brass clasps.
Bookplate of Sir Oswald Mosley, the 5th Baronet, and the father of the notorious British Fascist! The artwork all by one hand, and almost surely done by a Mosley. 8vo. 23 by 19 cm. Ten leaves of heavy card, each with a watercolor measuring 10 by 9 cm mounted into a window on both the recto and verso. Watercolors are classic Swiss views, rendered by a deft amateur hand. They exude a naive charm, which is not to say that they do not capture some quite fine detail. Generally people, the size of specks, serve to provide scale, as do such things as boats and carts -- the time tested props of many a panorama painting. The places, noted in captions, include the Gorge du Trient, Carouge, the Giessbach Falls, the falls of Schaffhausen, a road leading to St. Gingolph, the Piumogna Falls, the glacier at Grindelwald, the Drachenfels, the road from Grindelwald to Unterseen, the Wesenhof by Thun, the Staubach Falls, the Wetterhorn, the Via Mala Gorge, the Wengenalp, Splungen, Unspunen, Lake Como by Bellaggio, Lake Geneva and Goldswyl. Often, in addition to the rivers, lakes and mountains, there are buildings, bridges, and othe man-made structures, all rendered ably. Some scattered light foxing. All tissue guards intact.

Collection des Costumes de la Suisse et de les pays limitrophes
3 Collection des Costumes de la Suisse et de les pays limitrophes
Zürich Keller et Fussli Full Morocco Very Good
N.d., circa 1830. 32mo. 11 by 9.5 cm. 23 hand-colored plates, including title page, with its wreath of alpenrose. Costumes from the cantons and major cities plus the Black Forest. Each illustration features two or three men and women, usually performing some typical craft or activity associated with the area, or ready to do so. In other words, the portraits have some dynamism to them, and with their bright hand-coloring and diminutive scale, richly deserve the adjective of "exquisite". Scarce, with the only copies showing on OCLC First Search at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek of the Netherlands and the Zentralbibliothek of Zurich. Crack along rear joint, with possible partial repair done. Other rubbing along the edges. Plates generally clean. Original tissue guards intact. A neat inked inscription in English on the FFEP dated 1831 and sited to Lucerne.

Petits Souvenirs de la Suisse
5 Petits Souvenirs de la Suisse
Full Morocco Leporello, Morocco Slipcase Fine
An extraordinary miniature souvenir from Switzerland. 14 panels, each a mere 370 by 250 mm or so, of hand-colored views of Switzlerland, including the Staubbach, Grindelwald Glacier, Wengen, the bridge in Fribourg, the Pont de Diable (Devil's Bridge), Chamouny, Chinon, the Chapel of William Tell. One illustration is rendered twice, of three Bernese maidens, captioned "The Three Graces" in one of the plates. The illustrations are printed and mounted onto card. The captions are not printed, but rather written in ink onto the card leaves. Bound in a thin morocco, with a delicate morocco slipcase with a gilt title.

[Leporello] Schweizer Trachten. Costumes Suisses. Swiss Costums. Costumi Svizzeri
6 [Leporello] Schweizer Trachten. Costumes Suisses. Swiss Costums. Costumi Svizzeri
Marbled paper pastedown on thin boards. Slipcase. Very Good
N.d., mid-19th century. 10 by 7 cm. 24 hand-colored panels. The illustrations stand out, among such costume-oriented leporellos, for their precise detailing, and also each features two or three men or women, generally engaged in some activity, and so they have a bit more dynamism than the norm for such fare. One can say that these are modest genre paintings. Costumes represent various cantons or cities -- Uri, Vaud, Valais, Appenzell, Bale, etc. The colors are especially vivid and bright. Scarce -- no copies located on OCLC First Search. The leporello proper has a glossy marbled paper on its exterior. The paper is Victorian for sure, but we can not attest to its being original to the object. The slipcase has a paper pastedown title label, with colored armorial decoration and foliate baroque styled ornamentation for the border. There is no publisher or place of publication indicated, and nothing is written in the leporello itself to provide the least hint. Condition: light wear. Presumed complete.

9 Bernhard, Lucie (1894 - ?) Chesa Dr. Ruppanner Samedan
Samedan, Switzerland Vellum Fine
N.d., circa 1930s. Two poems about a Sanitarium opened by Dr. Rupanner in Samedan, which is close to St. Moritz in the southeast corner of Switzerland, accompanied by watercolor vignettes. The title page is given over to a fine watercolor of the grand four story house, which housed the hospital. It would appear that Bernhard was a patient in the hospital, and in gratitude she indited the poem and decorated its four pages with vignettes that echo the subjects brought up in the verses. The poems themselves are written in a neat, however inscrutable, hand, with a cursive style no longer in favor, and thus it is very difficult to make out every letter or word, but it is plain that Bernhard was a far more accomplished graphic artist than poet, and it is believed that she did work as a professional artist. Of the fourteen illustrations (not counting that on the title page), the most interesting, and largest as well, are of three girls by a garden, of a pretty room with a display cabinet, of two angels ascending to heaven, and of an ongoing medical operation. The album containing the poems has many blank leaves following the poem. Its full vellum binding, with its decorative veining, is clean, with the slight bowing of its boards as typical of vellum.

Costumes de Suisse, Braun, Adolphe
10 Braun, Adolphe Costumes de Suisse
Lucerne and Dornach (Alsace), respectively Fortune Aubert; Agence de la Maison Ad. Braun
Scarce collection of photographic costume plates, with no copies located on OCLC. N.d., circa 1869. With 36 mounted photographs of Swiss women in provincial dress and either engaged in prototypical activities are surrounded by the paraphernalia of such activities. In a neat cursive in the lower margin is written the city that the photo was taken, and so each woman shown is in a sense representative, in her dress and activity, of the named place. Adolphe Braun (1812 - 1877) was a French photographer known for floral studies, Parisian street scenes and Alpine landscapes. In 1855 he was awarded a medal at the Exposition Universelle held in Paris that year. Later he created a business that focused on photographic reproductions of important paintings and sculpture, and his company became a leader in that field. While the set of photos contained in this album have faded somewhat, one can not but be impressed with the sharpness of elements in the image. There is a painterliness to the compositions: the women and their dress might be the primary subject, but many of the images also feature floral decoration and Alpine backgrounds.

19 Heierli, Julie; Vorwort von Dr. H. Lehmann, Direktor des Schweizerischen Landesmuseums in Zurich Costumes Suisses [Schweizer-Trachten-Bilder von Wehrli A.-G., Kilchberg-Zurich]
Zurich Th. O. Studer-Schlapfer Wraps and Box Near Fine
N.d., circa 1900 to 1920. 49 postcards of Swiss folk dress costume using colored photographs of local people. Captions on back or occasionally in corner of photo indicated the canton of origin. Regarding the pamphlet: 36 pp. Oblong, same dimensions as the cards, which are standard postcard-sized, or 14 by 9 cm, 5.5 by 3.5 inches. The box of cards was surely a souvenir item sold at the Schweizerisches Landesmuseum in Zurich which is a preeminent art and cultural institution in the country to this day, with particular strength in the decorative arts and ethnological matters relating to Switzerland and it was issued at a time that there was an awareness that the traditional modes of dress and agrarian living were quickly disappearing other than in the most limited of festival celebrations, and thus there was a surging of scholarly attention to these ways and a rush to preserve the record. Perhaps as interesting as the costume are the models who are ordinary folks. In their figures we encounter typically a compact efficiency. Seldom are they svelte by modern standards, but we can see an active purposefulness all the same. And then their facial expressions speak of humility, pride, perhaps resignation, perhaps something spiritual. A few of the cards are particularly beautiful and are hard to distinguish from painting. The box has some minor dampstaining in one corner and some small rubbed areas. Its outer shell has had some discreet repairs, as a result of which the box has structural integrity. The cards are clean, with some light toning, and uncreased. The pamphlet has some tiny fox marks which are barely noticeable.
