4 Jenkins, Js. [James] The Martial Achievements of Great Britain and Her Allies; from 1799 to 1815
London Js. Jenkins 1815 First Full Morocco Very Good
Folio, 35 by 28 cm. With 52 hand-colored aquatint plates (including title vignette) as well as hand-colored dedication to Duke of Wellington. Engraved title (uncolored). Aquatinted by Thomas Sutherland after paintings by William Heath. Plates dated 1814 and 1815. Tooley 281. Abbey, Life 365. A contemporary history of the Napoleonic Wars with plates capturing well the frenzy, action, excitement, horror and heroism of war with astonishing realism. Scattered light to moderate soiling, including finger smudges in margins of some plates. One closed tear, about 3 cm or one inch, in a plate margin repaired with archival tape. Rebacked sympathetically, and quite inconspicuously -- the spine leather is slightly darker but passes as a good match, and the gilt decoration on the spine is in a period correct style, and fits with the gilt and blind decoration on the boards.
