Vingt-Cinq Costumes pour le Théâtre, Barbier, Georges. Preface by Edmond Jaloux. Frontis portrait of Barbier by Charles Martin
1 Barbier, Georges. Preface by Edmond Jaloux. Frontis portrait of Barbier by Charles Martin Vingt-Cinq Costumes pour le Théâtre
Paris Bloch and Meynial 1927 Limited First Edition Heavy Wrappers. Very Good Plus Good Jacket
No. 185 of 275 copies. 4to. 32 by 24 cm. 25 tipped-in pochoir costume plates by Barbier. Lettered tissue guards. Colas 218. The artwork is all dated to the early post-World War One period, into the early 1920s. Captured here is the fantasy spun by the costuming, so at odds with the parsimonious theatrical zeitgeist of the present when it seems so much of classic theater and opera is willfully updated to the unglamorous present day. Not that the costumes here are entirely unrelated to the then contemporary styles -- one can discern the cross-fertilization of costuming with fashion effortlessly, though, through Barbier's fluent presentation. Barbier focuses on the escapist element of theater, and his renderings usher us on this excursion. The plays represented include works by Rostand and Hugo, among others. Original pictorial wrappers. Closed tear of joints by extremities, with the longer tear at the base (about 6 cm in length). Glassine dust jacket mostly intact, but with several tears and chips, especially by the lower portion of the rear cover, and then by the spine extremities and neighboring joints. Frontis portrait of Barbier has flattened cornered crease. Otherwise, the plates, most importantly, are very clean and bright.

2 Bonfils, Robert, artist. Preface by Lucien Descaves La Manière Française. 20 images ou culs-de-lampe
Paris Lutetia 1917 First Near Fine
No. 244 of 320 copies, this copy on papier vergé. 4to. 33 by 25 cm. Title page, two pages of text, 16 hand-colored pochoir plates, table (Ordre des Images, this containing the colophon and limitation), loose in portfolio, as issued. With pochoir illustrations on every page besides the 16 plates. The plates depict the early stages of the war, both on the front and on the home front. The artwork is deliberately naive, the palette somewhat tenebrous, but with a clear intent to employ the French colors or red white and blue when possible. The folio folder itself has hand-colored pictorial boards and endpapers that are quite striking and fitting. With red white and blue striped silk ties. Light soiling to the cover. Minor tears to the paper pastedown along the spine.

3 Boutet de Monvel, Roger (text). Guy Arnoux, illustrator. Nos Frères d’Amérique
Paris Chez Devambez 1918 First Wraps Good
With an original pencil and watercolor drawing of a soldier with a cigarette signed by Arnoux on the front blank. Oblong, 13 by 16.5 cm. Unpaginated, with 12 pochoir plates celebrating various aspects of American military life and the American entry into the First World War. On the facing page of each plate (the verso of the prior plate) is a paragraph relating to the image. These short pieces are anecdotal, allusive, imaginative, literary and/or lyrical. They do not directly explain the image but rather offer an literary counterpart to it. The front cover is heavily foxed, and the foxing continues, gradually lightening, until the fourth leaf or so. After that the leaves are clean until the final blanks, when light foxing resumes. There is also a two inch closed tear on the front cover, repaired on the inside cover with archival tape. From the front this tear is not conspicuous. Original tasseled string tie intact.

5 Giafferri, Paul Louis L'Histoire du Costume Feminin Francais de l'an 1037 a l'an 1870
Paris Editions Nilsson 1922 First Edition Wraps housed in a portfolio Very Good
10 Fascicules housed in a portfolio folder. With 120 color pochoir plates, each measuring 39 by 28 cm, or 14.4 by 11 inches. The fascicules are devoted to different historic eras, and within, the plates are devoted to different aspects of clothing. All the fascicules have bright, lively illustrations on their covers which are among the most appealing illustrations in the series, followed by eight pages of text and then 12 plates, and the plates themselves have somewhat detailed captions describing the items depicted, thus making this an excellent visual reference as well as a hedonistic feast for the eyes for those enraptured by costume. Some fraying of the blue cloth of the outer portfolio. The leaves within are toned more heavily around the edges. A few chips. One fascicule has wraps torn at the spine line. Still, complete and mostly clean and fresh.

6 Lepape, Georges artist. Poems by Henry-Jacques Modes et Manieres D'Aujourd'Hui. 1914 - 1919. Annees de Guerre Douze Guoaches de Georges Lepape. Douze Poemes de Henry-Jacques
Paris Collection Pierre Corrard Limited First Edition Folder Near Fine
No. 164 of 300 limitation on Papier du Japon. This was a part of an immensely popular series of pochoir sets depicting fashion between 1912 and 1922, with a single issue for the war years, which appropriately carries a more somber tone in its illustrations and verse than the other issues released in more carefree times. Not that some of the joie de vivre and fashion flair is entirely absent here. Most striking about the pochoirs is the simplicity and efficiency of their representations. Georges Lepape was one of the foremost practictioners of the pochoir process, the peer of Georges Barbier, and here he shows himself as fluent at the bittersweet and tragic as at the light and frivolous. The twelve poems and illustrations have a flow and progression and thus this serves as a small lens on the war years and their tumult on the domestic front. The title page has a narrow band of darkening along the left side. The folder has a modest closed tear of the paper along the spine fold or joint. The ribbon tie is missing from the front but present in the rear. The decorated paper used to encase the loose sheets has a few minor tears along the vulnerable folds.
