1 "Littera Scripta Manet" Folio
Wood Fine
N.d., circa 1900. A woodcarved oak folio, or letter or writing portfolio. The woodcarving work and floral motives are folk art-ish. The relief work has a depth to it, and the front panel has a solidity to it, as befits an oak piece. The interior has a brownish-orange felt pad. Two ribbon ties on the side seal the folio shut. The folio measures 11.75 by 8.5 inches, or 30 by 22 cm.

2 Russell's Scroll Saw Designs. [Together with] ten separate design sheets and related ephemera. [Together with] fourteen actual specimens in wood and card of those designs
Providence, RI E. L. Freeman & Co., printer
Circa 1870s. A miscellany of scroll work sales and design material plus specimens of the designs. N.d., circa mid-nineteenth century. The design specimens include ones that might attractively be framed and hung, such as that of a boy sitting on a fence, with a dialogue bubble containing the word "Papers", executed in a black card (some of the surface paper has disappeared), or a triangular piece with what looks like a silhouette of two Chinese men at the side of a Chinese nobleman holding a fan. Other are fretwork pieces that might ornament a piece of furniture, or might serve as the ornamental part of a frame. Generally these pieces are in good repair, with only a few minor cracks. They range in size from a few inches to a little over a foot in length.

Woodcarved Head on Tall Paper Cutter and/or Bookmark
3 Woodcarved Head on Tall Paper Cutter and/or Bookmark
N.d., circa 1890. The head stands at the top of the 36 cm, or 14.5 inch, object, and is itself about 4 cm, 1.5 inches, tall. The cuts on the head are a wee bit coarse but the head resulting is a realistic representation of a man from an earlier era -- he has some characteristics of an 18th century figure, but also of a man of the Renaissance, and probably he doesn't quite fit in either period. The paper cutter is sleek and smooth, as required ideally for opening uncut pages in which a dull-edged knife serves best. Given its length, it would seem that the object might also have been intended to serve as a bookmark, and the two functions, paper cutting and bookmarking, go hand and hand, since a reader would have wanted to keep the paper cutter handy as he is leafing through a book.
