1 Hausgärten Skizzen und Entwürfe aus dem Wettbewerb der Woche
Berlin August Scherl 1908 First Card thick boards, or limp hardcover. Very Good Plus
Oblong, 22.5 by 30.5 cm. xviii, [4], 118, [2] pp. With six color plates of paintings of park-like gardens, stunning villas and bucolic settings. Several pages are devoted to each of the country houses discussed, with multiple illustrations of the house and gardens, house plans and garden lay-outs, and detail renderings of benches, pavillions, trellises and other highlights of the gardens. Perhaps most unusual is that costs for creating the gardens are set forth. The book was organized around a competition; the properties shown are the winning entries, with the top entry receiving a prize of 1,000 marks. All the properties have names, or "Mottos" as they are called here, meant in some way to capture something about their location or essence. Quite a beautiful book, capturing the most appealing aspects of domestic Wilhelmine culture as enjoyed by the affluent. Condition: light wear.

Miniature Garden
2 Miniature Garden
Box Very Good
Six Japanese ceramic figures -- a tori, a garden bridge, a pagoda, a person, a pavilion (?) -- all in the original box and unused, with thin string holding them down. N.d., circa 1930 -- almost certainly, pre-war. Also with accompanying instructions entitled "How to make a Japanese Dish Garden" on a folded sheet. A charming relic, with moderate wear and soiling to the box, which remains nonetheless structurally sound and attractive, with its paper pastedown illustration. The box is 12 by 10.5 by 3.5 cm, and the largest piece, the bridge, is 8 cm long.

3 Moderne Gartenfiguren D.R.G. M. Nr. 292723, 292724, 292725
Friedrichroda, Germany C. F. Ortlepp 1905 First Wraps Near Fine
Scarce, extraordinary trade catalogue for garden ornaments, many whimsical, with eye-catching bright color chromos highly evocative of a children's book. By scarce, we mean not only the non-existence of a physical copy to be found on OCLC First Search (there is apparently an Internet copy at Cambridge), but also, we are not aware of a trade catalogue quite like this one, other than, perhaps some toy catalogues. Oblong, 24.5 by 33.5 cm. Five leaves, each a bold color plate on the recto, and wrap covers. The ornaments are of realistic looking animals, anthropomorphic animals, a maiden, gnomes doing various gnome things, a pith helmeted army officer, comical men, playful frogs, etc. Although we have certainly seen animals and gnomes as lawn ornaments, we are not sure they have ever lived up to the likenesses promised here. Some of the figures are holding signs with warnings or playful messages. Condition: discoloration around the staples on the wraps. Fading to the wraps' orange coloration. A tiny edge chip on one of the plates.

4 [Trade Catalogue] Garden Furniture Hartmann-Sanders Co. New York . . . Chicago Catalog No. 35
Chicago 1927 Wraps Near Fine
4to. 26.5 by 20 cm. 16 pp., plus separate pink sheet with price list. The catalog features photos of solid wood, imposing garden benches, seats, rocking chairs, tables, pergolas (incorporating seating), arches, gates and fences. Some of the models are unusual designs and quite wonderful, and while the photos show the fixtures with a plain black background and no flora or climbing vines, one can easily picture these in lovely, elaborate garden surroundings. Toning around the perimeter of the wraps.

Les Jardins Precieux, Charmaison, Raymond. Prefact by Henri de Régnier. Pochoir coloring by Jean Saudé.
5 Charmaison, Raymond. Prefact by Henri de Régnier. Pochoir coloring by Jean Saudé. Les Jardins Precieux
Paris Collection Pierre Corrard. Chez Meynial 1919 First Folio. Near Fine
No. 285 of 300 copies. Printed on Japon from the Manufacture Asidzuoka. Folio. 48.5 by 33.5 cm. [4 leaves], 8 numbered leaves, followed by eight large pochoir plates. Pochoir artwork on top title page. (Two title pages, and uncertain that either qualifies as half title.) The pochoirs are feasts of brilliant, seductive color; we would consider this work one of the true high points of the pochoir printing movement from the early 20th century. The artwork can be categorized with equal claim as Impressionist, Post-Impressionist or Art Deco. Condition: ribbon tie gone. A touch of light soiling on cover. Otherwise, clean, fresh, with all tissue guards preserved as well.
