With time on our hands during the Coronavirus lockdown, we are reviewing the prices of some of our older stock and adjusting prices of books to ensure that they are the most attractive offering in the marketplace, as it is a reality of the antiquarian market for books that less expensive and mid-level material the trend has been inexorably downward, to the chagrin of booksellers and to the benefit of collectors.  Consequently, we have slashed prices anywhere between 20 percent and 60 percent of these books we have had listed for five years or more.  So we hope that anyone visiting the site might find something that might have become overpriced but now legitimately qualifies as a bargain.

? ? ? Popoff Frères, Moscou
1 ? ? ? Popoff Frères, Moscou
Vienna Société d’Industrie graphique Near Fine
Colorful tea promotion by Russian company doing business in France. N.d., circa 1898. Oblong, 12.5 by 16.5 cm. Unpaginated, 16 pp., including cover. The catalogue boasts that it is the official purveyor of tea to the Russian, Austrian-Hungarian, Belgian, Norwegian, Greek, Romanian and Persian (Iranian) courts and of its gold medallions won at various world expositions. After a color illustration of one of its tea packets, the chromolithographs depict tea drinkers from these countries, all the women attired in traditional garb. The light text on facing pages descants on such topics as how to prepare tea. The promotion stands out to us because it is of a Russian company in the late Imperial era. It is both scarce in and of itself -- we could not locate other copies -- but also scarce as a type of promotion, we believe.

4 Catalogue of Alden Salt Caster Co. 1891-'92 Sole Manufacturer of Dana K. Alden's World Renowned Table Salt Bottles, Patents, Caters, Designs, Novelties, etc. Alden's World-Renowned Lighting Calculator . . .
Boston 1891 Wraps Good
8vo. 19.5 by 12.5 cm. 24 pp., plus wrap covers. Primarily trade catalogue for salt and pepper shakers, which are depicted in blue and white illustrations, on nine of the pages. Also illustrated are a doll cologne bottle, a good luck tumbler, a lemon squeezer, a hydraulic pump oil can, a glass oven door and a spiral lighter, these shown on two of the pages. The facing pages are devoted to esoteric, curious or eccentric arithmetic puzzles or methodologies. The math primer would be in the tradition of catalogues throwing in general interest features that are unrelated to the goods being peddled. The catalogue is scarce, with no copies turning up on OCLC First Search. Condition: a dampstain by upper joint or paper folds, affecting all pages, but given its modest size, we believe few would be troubled by this. A film of light soiling spread on the yellow wraps. Light age toning of the leaves. Miniscule edge chipping.

Charles & Co. Catalogue. May, 1937
5 Charles & Co. Catalogue. May, 1937
New York 1937 Leatherette Very Good
Attractive culinary catalogue from a prestigious high-end gourmet grocer in New York, one that began in 1848 and continued in business into the 1980s (when it was acquired by Red Apple.) 8vo. 21 by 14 cm. 319 pp. With 8 page supplemental brochure dated September, 1937. The catalogue proper has color plates on both endpapers and two other pages, and many other b/w photos and drawings of products throughout. The outstanding feature of the catalogue aesthetically, though, is its two toned binding, which is high Art Deco, with relief stylized lettering and an image of Hermes! Otherwise, the catalogue is a treasure trove of information on better food products and their pricing back in the 1930s. Condition: fore-edges have light foxing. A few light and minor stains on the binding.

7 Les Portmonteaux Les Porte-Parapluies Les Poussiers de Porte de Dejonckheere-Andries. Magasins d'Exposition et de Vente. Alimentation Catalogue No. 294
Bruxelles String tie Very Good
4to. 28 by 20.5 cm. 20 pages, plus wraps. (Page numbering doesn't relate to this brochure, and pages within would appear to have been pulled from a larger stockpile of promotional leaves.) Store displays for food businesses -- groceries, delis, restaurants, cafes, etc. Among items are etageres for kitchens, bakery display, and the like, coffee machines, various meat racks with hooks, a wide variety of display vitrines. This company tailored the brochure for the type of business it was serving, and thus, "Alimentation" is stamped, not printed, on the front cover, and it pulled sheets it deemed relevant to food businesses and inserted them into its outer cover. The designs generally have an Art Deco sensibility. Condition: light to moderate wear.

[Russian Cookbook] ????? ? ??????? ? ????????? ????? [The Book of Healthy and Tasty Food]
14 [Russian Cookbook] ????? ? ??????? ? ????????? ????? [The Book of Healthy and Tasty Food]
Moscow ????????????? 1962 Cloth Good
4to. 26.5 by 21 cm. 424 pp. Many color plates -- these are photo-based color drawings, for the most part. Also many b/w text illustrations, mostly photos. This cookbook, originally published in 1939 and revised afterward, was developed by scientists at the Soviet Institute of Nutrition in the Academy of Medical Sciences. With its lavish illustrations, the book was more than a practical handbook in the kitchen, but also a potent piece of Soviet propaganda. Many of the recipes were not feasible for the average family during the Soviet Era because of the chronic scarcity in grocery stores, but they nonetheless suggested how life was good under the Soviet system. Also, the writers touted the success of the Soviet food industry in the introductory chapter. Moderate wear to binding. Scattered soiling of the pages.

16 [Trade Catalogue] Sherer-Gillett Co. Here Are "The Goods". Look at Them. Patentees and Manufacturers of Sherer's Pure Food Grocery Counters
Chicago Printer: The Commonwealth Press, Chicago 1912 Wraps Good
Oblong, 19 by 27 cm. 24 pp. Catalogue for grocery counters, shelving and bins, made of wood (oak) and with glass-fronted windows to display the contents. The rather elaborate grocery furniture was quite decorative and from a now long bygone age. One might encounter such fixtures occasionally still in a few consciously old-fashioned emporia. The catalogue uses an orange and brown coloring on many of the photos to highlight the product one offer, and there are a few illustrations superimposed of a grocer and a fashionably dressed female customer. With the obligatory testimonials, upon which we rely to date the catalogue. Also separate four page price list (one sheet) and an excerpt from "The Merchant's Journal" with an article praising the company's counters. Scarce, with a single copy possibly of this catalogue located on OCLC, in Delaware, and another catalogue from the company at the Chicago Historical Society and a much later catalogue from the company in Toronto. Condition: cover soiled. A few minor edge chips and tiny closed tears. Moderate wear.

How to Get Well ---- To Stay Well, Cabana, Oliver
18 Cabana, Oliver How to Get Well ---- To Stay Well
East Aurora, New York Sun-Diet Health Foundation 1933 First Wraps Very Good
12mo. 16 by 11.5 cm. 40 pp., plus wraps. Photo portrait of Cabana as frontis. Cabana advocates the employment of purely natural methods to achieve good health. This means no drugs, no medicines, no surgery, but rather, what he deems a "detoxication" to cleanse the body, purify the blood, the use of ultra-violet treatments and proper diet. For diet, he is a believer in fresh fruits and vegetables. He warns against over-eating, tobacco and alcohol. And he champions the notion that food combinations matter greatly. The brief summary doesn't sufficiently capture the multitude of opinions and theories propounded by Cabana. Cabana (1865-1938) was a successful entrepreneur and politician with a wide array of business and other interests. Scarce, with the only copy turning up on OCLC First Search at the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library. Condition: moderate amount of soiling of wraps. A few pencil marks within.
