Hand-colored print New York harbor and based on the caption below, possibly attempting to show the English takeover of New Amsterdam, soon to become New York, in 1666. This engraving was issued as a vue d'optique, but the upper title with the lettering in reverse was cut out of this copy, which was trimmed so there are no blank margins remaining. As typical of the genre (vue d'optiques), the depiction of New York harbor bears no resemblance to the actual place, then, or ever, as the artwork was done by someone who almost surely never set eyes on the place he was conjuring up. The print is comparatively scarce, with no copies located on OCLC First Search other than what appears only an internet resource at AAS. N.d., circa 1770s, when Chereau was active and issuing other prints relating to New York. 26.5 by 38 cm. Printed on a thick paper, which is now pasted onto a limp card. Condition: light soiling and age toning. Minor close tearing and edge wear. Flattened creasing down center.
