N.p., American. N.d., circa 1840s. (The heavy stock paper is watermarked Whatman 1843.) We can not state definitively that the verse was original to whomever wrote it out, but we could find no trace of the poem elsewhere. The elegaic verse begins: "Abby's gone! that pleasant daughter,/ She whose face was lighted up/ At your coming and whose presence/ Added joy to life's full cup." We would guess that the manuscript was inspired by an actual death, and was a gift to the bereaved parent(s). The calligraphy is a beautiful complement to the sentiments expressed. Exposed portion: 39 by 31.5 cm, with frame (and matting), 57 by 45.5 cm. Condition: Fraktur has small inconspicuous hole, a jagged closed tear on its bottom which nonetheless isn't glaring, a touch of soil and other wear, but overall, attractive and a lovely example of the genre (meaning a 19th century Pennsylvania printed fraktur with hand-coloring, etc. The broadside has not been examined outside of frame. The cast of the second offering included Joseph Grimaldi. Announced as coming to the theater in February is Mrs. [Dorothea] Jordan. Condition: light soiling. Minor creasing. Right edge cut unevenly, as typical. Overall nicely preserved Regency Era theatrical broadside chock full of the biggest celebrity actors of the early nineteenth century.

Mary Watkinson, a student at Mrs. Clarke's School, created this small-ish sampler in 1790. In addition to the typical alphabet, here all caps, and numbers, here 1 to 16, the sampler has a few short homilies, such as j"Be thankfull for a friendly reproof" and "Spend your time well". The sampler, we think, is quite accomplished for a seven year old. It measure, in sight, 25.5 by 23 cm, and with the frame, 30 by 28 cm.
