The illustrations are done by a confident, proficient hand, with a balance of economy and detail. We assume an amateur did these drawings, but they could certainly pass for the work of a professional. The piquancy of the humor is somewhat blunted by our not knowing the officers who are being lampooned, but we can still appreciate the intended gentle levity and esprit, and additionally, the snapshots into the past.
