Lovely onlay binding by Bayntun, depicting Vicar as centerpiece, and elaborate gilt and red geometric border decoration on the boards and spine. 4to. 25 by 17 cm. xvi + 291 pp. Original cloth cover, front, spine and rear, bound in. Very handsome illustrated rendition of classic country manners novel of Goldsmith's. Poirson's colored illustrations perfectly complement the story, capturing its sweetness and Georgian society, while being very much influenced by the arts and crafts ornamentation and style of the 1880s.While Rackham's illustrations have become more closely associated with the novel, Poirson's are more fitting and in concordance with its mood and spirit. Condition: light rubbing of lower spine tip and edges. Otherwise, clean, tight, fine.
